I thought that this article warranted its own thread to not get lost in one of the other ownership threads. http://mobile.buffalonews.com/?articleRedirect=1
The Jacobs family has the wealth, ties to the region and ownership experience. This would be a fantastic move for the Bills and WNY.

Yeah, he went to Riverside High School. He played in one of the best sporting events that I have ever seen in person when they played against Paul Harris and Johnny Flynn in basketball. NF was like 24-0 & Riverside 22-1 (with a loss to NF). It was a war (Williams actually punched Harris in the back of the head) in the 1st half and got t'd. At any rate it was a great game eventually won by NF but 2 guys ended up playing some in the NBA and 1 in the NFL.

Just a side note, I was watching Russell Wilson on the Final Four pregame show and he seems like such a great guy. If I were a Seahawks fan I would be thrilled to have that character leading my football team.
-
Aaron Murray is my guess. I always kind of liked him but he REALLY impressed me last year. He is a gamer that is tough as nails.
-
I generally agree. I think that Peteraon, Lynch, Bush and Spiller are about equal with Charles, McCoy, Forte and Murray. The depth of the non 1st rounders is better than the 1st rounders IMO but there are also more to pick from.I think the groups are about equal. Peterson gives the second group an edge. But that does nothing to change the fact that the generational. game changing backs in the history of the league have all been taken higher in the first round than not. That doesn't mean that lower round picks don't become great players or that 1st round RBs don't bust. It's just that greatness is by and large found at the top.
GO BILLS!!!
I guess the point is if you were to stack 1st round pass rushers, QBs or WR against non 1st round pass rushers, QBs or WR you would see a larger discrepancy (at least intuitively I think that).
-
While I agree in principle, McCoy, Forte, Foster, Charles, Lacy, Rice, Bell (x2), Freddie, Tate, Morris, Stacy, Gore, Pierre Thomas, Bernard, Sproles and Murray are non first rounders.Yes, RBs can be had anywhere.
RBs like Peterson, Johsnon, Spiller, etc. can't be had just anywhere. You find them in the 1st round and usually higher in the first round. Usually.
GO BILLS!!!
Peterson, Lynch, Spiller, Stewart, McGahee, Moreno, McFadden, Felix Jones, Dangelo Williams, Bush, CJ2K, and Beanie Wells are the active 1st rounders that I could think of.
Which group is better?

I don't see more than 2 in the top 8. I thought 3 for a while but leading up to the draft hype on Bortles has cooled some and on Bridgewater quite a bit. At the same time the position players have solidified their places in the top 10. To answer your question, the strength of the top non QBs (Watkins, Evans, Clowney, Robinson, Mack, and Matthews) have QB needy teams trying to grab 1 of them and then go for a Mettenberger type.Four seems highly unlikely, but all of the top eight teams other than Atlanta have fairly high need for a QB. I would say four or five of them are or should be desperate for one. Every year, QBs get overdrafted (ponder, tannehill, locker, gabbert, etc). Why should this year be different?

But he tries hard....The only receiver expendable with the Williams acquisition is Chris Hogan- he serves no logistical purpose on the roster whatsoever. Cutting Stevie (which is a reoccurring theme on TSW) does not offer any cap relief of note (at least for 2014). Woods, Goodwin, and yes even Graham are young with upside. Bardem, Roberson and Kaufman have great size. Easley's special teams work is impressive. And even Elliott showed promise before his injury last preseason. Thusly, if there is a WR that should be jettisoned- it has to be Hogan, who is as useless as teats on a bull.

Good stuff Jboyst. I am also glad that you did not put my least favorite player as a viable option to make the team. I am waiting for someone to make that case so that I can lose my mindYes, and I don't want to bog up this thread with TJ Graham stuff.
TJ Graham has a number of threads about him, and a lot of studies done on his play. Over half the throws made to him were poorly thrown and deemed uncatchable. The other half were seldom that good anyway and not between the numbers or in the zone.
http://www.buffalorumblings.com/2014/2/21/5433138/should-the-bills-replace-tj-graham Here you can go view every ball thrown to TJ Graham. Watch how often he was wide open and didn't even get a look because the QB didn't look, didn't have time, didn't take time, didn't try, whatever.
Graham is not horrible.

Its fine we aren't going to agree on everything. Of the 2 players listed (without looking) which do you prefer? I am a little indifferent. I think that either one would help your team in the same manner. I think Spiller is the better runner but not necessarily the better back.Reggie Bush has played with Drew Brees & Calvin Johnson. Spiller has played with Ryan Fitzpatrick. Bush was never the #1 option for defenses to stop. You're good poster & I enjoy the debate. But you're severely underestimating the defenses Spiller & Bush face. The #1 thing teams playing the Bills want to take away is the running game. You dare them to beat you with the pass. That's 8 & 9 man fronts. You will get destroy if you do that with Brees & Johnson. Major, major advantage for a running back. And Spiller still has a 5.1 career average.
Spiller is a better pure rb than Bush & I don't think it's really close.

I am not objective as an OSU fan but I think that he is a rich man's Eddie Lacy. He will most likely be the first RB drafted in the late 1st or early 2nd. He is a complete back though and will be good at the next level.WOW!!! I knew nothing about this kid but after watching highlights in a HUGE FAN!!! This kid can do it all. He's a monster of a runner but has soft hands, really good vision for finding openings, and the power to make a hole when it's not there. The 2 plays at the end of one of the highlight videos I watched were runs of over 50 yards against Illinois and they were a thing of beauty. What round is this kid projected in?

I certainly mean it as praise. I think that they both fall between Jamal Charles and Chris Johnson (closer to Charles). They have unique skill sets that very few have -the ability to score from anywhere on the field. I am a big fan of Spiller and think that he is our most dynamic weapon. With that being said I try to look at the big picture and if he isn't going to be back here than I would prefer to get value. If my option is sign Chris Johnson and trade up for Clowney vs. keep Spiller and draft Ebron, I pick the former.Yup. Honestly I think you slightly overstate how well SP used bush and think he's a big part of the reason guys don't think of him as a good rusher.
Certainly he came up with cool play designs but sometimes I think he shoehorns guys so strongly into roles that it creates predictability and incomplete players that struggle to get into the flow of games. Obviously not all the time as he is a very good offensive mind but I think his playcalling is streaky.
In the case of bush I think he was so worried about creating space and misdirection that despite coming up with cool packages he neglected that Reggie could carry 200 times and "bring the wood" like he did against Arizona.
I think we both think highly of bush though and some others in the discussion think we aren't using the comparison as praise of spiller. I know I am and I'm pretty sure you mean it as a good thing too.

Two months have passed and I thought it would be interesting to go back to this thread. On the 1st page Buftex predicted that the new ownership group would start to take shape! He later suggested that it would be Pegula.

I am still struggling with this. Reggie had 1,512 yards rushing and receiving last year and 7 TDs. He averaged 5.5 yards per touch. If Spiller had that same year wouldn't we be thrilled? 1,006 on the ground with 223 carries and 506 in the air on 54 catches? Spiller averaged 4.8 yards per touch and had 1,118 yards (933 rushing on 202 carries and 185 receiving on 33 catches) and 2 TDs.I'm not sure I understand this point. In 2 out of his 4 years, Spiller has gotten 200 carries. Bush has went over 200 carries 3 times in 8 years. Yet, Bush averages 4.3 ypc for his career while Spiller averages 5.1. So Spiller has been given a bigger workload earlier in his career & averages almost a full ypc higher. He is a better rusher than Bush. And Spiller plays with the best backup rb in the league. And Spiller didn't get to play with Brees or Payton. Spiller is severely underrated on this board.
Over the last 3 years (rushing & receiving):
Player A: 631 touches for 3,651 yards (5.8 yards per touch) & 16 TDs
Player B: 798 touches for 4,172 yards (5.2 yards per touch) & 22 TDs
One of those players is Spiller and one is Reggie Bush. It's debatable as to which I would pick but they just aren't that different to me.
-
The Saints make the most sense to me. Their window is small and Payton has had great success with Bush and later Sproles. They have a lot of confidence in Khiry Robinson but if given the chance to acquire Spiller I would think that they would jump at it. Payton would use him exactly as he should be used.Spiller is precisely the kind of player whom Jerry Jones would love to acquire - I've always thought so. If there is a deal to be made, it's very likely with the Cowboys. I could also see the Falcons going for him. Considering he's a running back and he's in a contract year, make the trade if you can get a high pick or two in return.
-
I think that he is saying Spiller and the 9th pick for 3.You think we give them Spiller and get their draft spot? Is this a joke? "We could take any of these possibly franchise changing QBs but the Bills would give us Spiller, you know, that 4 year RB who had one descent year and also is somewhat injury prone"
Maybe we can get Jacksonvilles 3rd round pick for Spiller, maybe.
-
I wouldn't say Williams is in that mold but Dallas is a good call. I think that both of those guys run like that. As soon as Murray emerged though Jones was gone. There aren't many examples as most teams try to build with complimentary skill sets. FJax is the complete back, Dixon the power guy and Spiller the speed back. Who knows what the plan is but based on the CJ2K rumors and the number of RBs in for pre draft visits they have to be considering one.Dallas just had two in Demarco Murray and Felix Jones. How about Forsett and Williams in Carolina?

I'm with you on this. Don't you just kind of get the sense that the Bills are trying to hit a home run? They seem to be involved in everything right now (for better or worse). Mack may very well be the target if they can get somewhere between 3-6.Hi, welcome to the board.
I would think that since most draft analysts are saying that this is a very deep draft loaded with talent, and IMO the smart thing to do is trade outta #9 while picking up some extra picks.
While the Bills FO is trending towards Buffalo natives I would think that trading up for Khalil Mack is a possibility. Although, I can't see any team with a brain trading up to #1 and not drafting Clowney.
All this talk of trades, I gotta wonder if the FO is looking to dump CJ or Stevie for more picks.
-
This^No, no, no!!!
Why not have them both? What's the problem work having 2 good players at that position?
Stevie will play his natural position, slot receiver. Woods and Williams will play on the outside with Goodwin as a weapon like Tavon Austin.

I agree with all of that. This staff has been and will continue to be aggressive it appears. I think that Spiller may very well be on his way out but they will only do it if they are getting good value back. Freddie had 890 yards, 4.3 YPC and 9 TDs and is a team captain. He will be back but I suspect that this will be his last year (maybe 1 more). I am with you though that whatever it takes to make this team better -do it.I don't disagree with the fact that maximizing our current assets is the way to go, but I don't think the current management is going to sit around to wait and see if cj is going to sign an extension either. If they trade him great, if he walks so be it. This current staff didn't draft him, nor do I think they would have given the chance. I'm just saying that if the opportunity is there to upgrade your team regardless whose feelings get hurt, you do it.
I'm a huge fan of spillers and I do like everything Fred has done for the Bills. All I am saying is that this new management/coaching staff is going in a new direction. Half of the players under gailey were gone last year and the rest are soon to follow. Don't be surprised to see maybe 6-10 players left from the team that played in 2012.
It's a new era for the Bills and hopefully new results.

Great post. I don't think that they will release CJ. He will either be traded or play out his contract. I have mentioned in a few places using CJ and the 9th pick to move up. They may even have that deal on the table already.I don't think Marrone likes the way Spiller runs. Yes, he is electrifying when he gets it right, but too often he created negative plays this year and you can't have that when you're trying to develop a rookie QB. Getting behind the chains early is the kiss of death. To me this is further proof that they want to go a different direction at RB sooner rather than later. We'll know for sure if they reach out and try to sign him. You'd figure they are willing to offer some good money seeing as they were willing to trade for him at his current salary, right? It also seems like they've been sniffing around a lot of RBs with interviews and pre-draft visits. Off the top of my head they've spoken with Andre Williams, Lache Seastrunk, and Hill from LSU.
Very interested to see how it plays out. I can't imagine they keep Spiller if they sign Johnson. Who would trade for CJ though knowing you'll probably just cut him? IMO Spiller could be devastating in Denver with all that room to run.
-
Fred had a higher yards per carry and more TDs last year with less carries.WORD!!!
Skycap has it pegged.
Who cares whose contract is up, whose old and is a nice f'in guy or who signed with the Bills in free agency. It doesn't matter.
If the opportunity is there to upgrade your team with a pro bowl talent, you do it! Is he better than Fred? Hell yes everyday. Will Freds feelings be hurt? Who the F cares? This management and coaching group want to win and win now. They don't give a rats a$$ who gets shoved off the bus or into a retirement home. Winning is all that matters and every fan of this team should see that right now!!
And why should we care whose contracts are up? Let's just let guys walk for nothing and not worry about maximizing our assets. Let's not have a well thought out plan. Thanks for the well thought out plan!! I'm sure that you are right on the Bills line of thinking.

Because by next year you can't pay both. I would guess that Johnson will be at least $3-$4m (he was scheduled for $8m). Spiller is going to want to get paid after this season and you may get ahead of it and trade him to avoid a Byrd situation (the Houston rumors are already out there). It's possible that they have a standing offer in place with Spiller and 9.why not? with how much they want to run the ball. you need extra bodies. why not have 2 similar RBs so you can run the same plays with both backs.
How many teams have 2 elusive speed backs (ever)? I can't think of 1. You just won't invest that kind of money in duplicate players, at least no one that I can think of ever has. I would be really surprised if it was both.
-
I would think that they certainly would have Freddie. I suspect Summers will make the team. If they are considering adding Johnson I am fairly confident that they will be trading Spiller. I don't think that the Bills want to guarantee Spiller $20 something million next year. He has been too inconsistent. I like Spiller but the Lache Seastrunk visit and the fact that they were aggressive with Chris Johnson tells me that they are looking for a new speed back.Oh but they would still have Fred and Frank !
