I just started and finished watching Breaking Bad
Buftex replied to The Poojer's topic in Off the Wall Archives
When she was younger, that was more of an issue...now she really only gets on my nerves about 3-3.5 hours a week, when she carries on like a (cute) fool, watching "her" Cowboys...if I actively root against them, it is some huge betrayal...so, I pretty much keep my mouth shut during Cowboys games...if I am not off at a bar watching the Bills! -

I have always said, some of the most bigoted, red-neck, small-minded people I have ever known, were from growing up in New York. -

ESPN, Hank Williams Jr. part ways
Buftex replied to papazoid's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
I guess you missed the part about this being Hank Jr's decision to take his ball and go home...this is as much publicity Hank Jr has gotten in decades, and he hasn't recorded a good ablum since about 1972. I suspect that ESPN was one of his more reliable cash-cows. Maybe he and Ted Nugent can go on some sort of "Freedom" tour together.... Oh well, it is a stupid song, but I will miss it, because it is just another reminder of how long it has been since the Bills were truly relevent...and another reminder how Monday Night Football, since movinig to ESPN has been a big snooze-fest...they manage to take the excitement out of anything... -

Wow, you are simpler than I thought...guys miss more time today, because they treat concussion like symptoms...concussions went untreated, and un-acknowledged, for the most part, in the 60's and 70's...if you could stand up, you could play. I am wondering if you watch must hockey, cuz you are coming off as someone who just wants to argue, cuz that is your life-blood. Do you really think nobody got concussions 40 years ago? Jeez, I thought you were not going to grace us with your verbal flatulence anymore, what happened? -

You are very wrong there... but whatever, I admire your self-assured style, even when you are painfully wrong. I have been watching hockey, solidly, for close to 40 years. I realize, arguing is more important to you than reading. I acknowleded, the players are faster, stronger now, but, their equipment is superior, hell even the boards that they are checked into, now, are designed to give more, so the impact of the hits is minimized. Helmets may not protect that brain all that much, but they protect them better than no helmets at all...and, honestly as someone who has watched a ton of hockey, I don't recall, back in the 70's & 80's many players missing weeks at a time (or a year, for Sidney Crosby) for concussion like symptoms. Medical handling of these situations is light years ahead of what it was back in Rick Martins' times. And, fighting and head blows in that era were the norm, not the exception. If you get a chance (I know you hate advice) and watch the HBO documentary "Broadstreet Bullies", about the 70's Flyers. -

AD, you don't think the game was more physical in the 70's and 80's? I realize, the players are bigger, and faster now, but they also wear more protection than they used to. Believe me, I am not one of those who thinks the game is "too soft" now, as I hear critics say, but I think the combination of equipment, medical training, and some rule changes make the game a little more player freindly now. Whenever there is some big, physical play now, and they ananlyze whether it was legal or not, I almost always find myself thinking "that is considered too much?" Flagerant, "dirty" play, for better or worse, was a big part of the appeal of NHL hockey, back in the day. -

Again, pretty much any mention of Hitler, or the Holocoust in any sort of non-historical context is taboo...not my rules, just a fact...it will get anybody in trouble. Larry David had a pretty good bit about it...the things you just can't do, no matter who you are..."South Park" may be the only "place" on earth that gets around this stuff... Remember the whole hubub that Tiki Barber caused a month or so ago, comparing himself to Ann Frank? Honestly, I can't stand Barber, but, he was just using it as a metaphor...but in our simple society, you just can't use that metaphor, without the back-lash. -
And George Lopez is one of the great political thinkers of our time...

I agree, in essence...but I am not sure if he is a terrible human being, maybe just one is very flawed, and very immature for his age...

I have always been a big fan of Brett Favre. I know he has his critics, and I used to spend too much time defending him. He is truly one of the greats of all time...but this whole thing just makes him look like a complete jerk (as if the dick pics weren't enough)...his agent should just recommend to him that he disappear for about 2 years, let people forget the unsavory, poor end to his great career, but, more importantly, let him put his career in perspective, for himself, before he makes public comments about current guys. In my book, Rodgers is already proving to be equal to Favre, if he keeps his current level of play going for another 3-4 years...he doesn't have to play 20 years...go away Brett, your fans are even getting sick of you now. Good for Clay Matthews. Favre is obviously missing the adoration of Packers fans, and it is killing him to see Rodgers succeed.

He wasn't a big scrapper, but Martin was a pretty physical player (particularly for one so skilled) in a time when the game was a lot more physical...and don't forget, he spent a good part of his career not wearing a helmet. -
Ann Coulter compared the Wall Street protesters to Nazis...where is the outrage? All Americans should have the right to be !@#$s, left or right... btw- as a lib, I speak for many on the left, please, we do not want to be associated with Georg Lopez...and we do not endorse anything he says.

I agree...particularly when he tried to call a timeout at the end of the first half, to make the Bengals punt, hopefully, giving the Bills a chance at a Punt return for a TD. Of course, in that case, it was actually 1st down, not 4th (Chan said an official indicated it was 4th down, but another said it was 1st, he wouldn't have called the TO on a 1st down). Not a big deal, ultimately, but with all the decent return men, and hybrid players the Bills have, you would think (hope) that they have some sort of play that they practice for these type of situations...longshot or not. Remember the Titans "homerun throwback"? Of course you do, if you are a Bills fan, older than 10. I remember Wychek saying that they had practiced that play a few times, every week, for 2 or 3 seasons...just waiting for the time to use it...BINGO! Right time, right place... btw- Chan not calling a TO at the end doesn't make me think he doesn't know what he is doing, just found it curious. He is normally pretty agressive...why ditch your last possibility of winning a game? What is the fear, you lose by 7, instead of 3?
-
I bet his show gets cancelled on TBS...oh wait..
-
Agreed...I still love the Bills to win, any way they can, but I so much prefer to see some defense, on a more regular basis. The odd shoot-out style battle used to be a blast, but when I go to the bar on Sundays, and look up, every few minutes there is some huge play in a game, everybody whoopin' it up, it normally illicits me to think "do any teams play defense anymore?" rather than "what a great play!"
-
Oh man...do I feel dumb...I don't know why, I was under the impression the first game was today (Thursday), and then again on Saturday...I am sorry for the public freak-out!
-
Looks like no Sabres on Center Ice tomorrow...finally got the shcedule on the screen, only game is the Canadians game... Likely means nothing on Saturday either...Sabres season delayed, for some of us, for another week...truly disappointed!

On the Maher thing, he said, IMO, something that wasn't terribly offensive, and was fired from a long-time job, by the same company that is having a problem with Willimas...and I actually agree with you completely on the HWJR words, but it is a long standing principle in the media, you always avoid Hitler comparisons...no matter how you meant them. It was is one of the few taboos...Maher was **** on by Disney, a conservative company...and I certainly don't recall many (O'Riley the one exception...but he is a closet Hollywood liberal anyways) coming to Maher's defense, until long after the story had gone away. -

Well...that really doesn't have anything to do with much of anything, but let it all out... Nowhere was I making an argument that anyone was above any sort of behavior, just making the point that Williams "punishment" is no different than other celebrities who were knocked down, for making controversial statements...there have been plenty, espousing both liberal and conservative views. The argument always seems to be (such as the case of the Dixie Chicks or Bill Maher), you have the "freedom of speech" to say what you want, but people have the freedom to react to your words, and take action if they don't like it...I guess I am just unclear as to why so many of you loons think Hank Jr is being any more unfairly treated than others, of a liberal persuasion... -

So, I guess that is a typical knee-jerk conservative response, to deny facts, so you can repeat a tired point, because you are (mostly) amongst like-minded inter-net buddies who confirm your awesomeness for you...you can't think of any examples, similar to the Williams thing, where a "lib" said something that wasn't acceptable to some people, and got canned for it? Really? I can think of quite a few... -

I agree, 100%, the whole controversy is trumped up bull ****. But, ESPN, for all intents and purposes, created this "controversy" using the conservative principle that saying something that is bad for business, is, well...bad for business. Would anybody have given a **** about this, or hell, would anyone have even known about this, if ESPN hadn't taken action? Would anyone have been up in arms? While I agree with your point, I should point out, Williams didn't compare anyone to "Nazis"...he said "Hitler", so, it isn't all that different than the "Bush is Hitler" non-sense. I think you either didn't hear what Williams actually said, or, you are shading it to make your argument...but, if I say that, then GG will say that it is a typical knee-jerk reaction by a lib...and as I have learned, GG is morally superior, I would hate to get on his bad side... -
