I am well aware of what they used during the early days. Money was more of a driving force than lack of talent. The teams could barely scrape by and could not afford to have more people on their roster. Therefore, they had no choice but to use a single platoon system. The talent was there.

In relative terms, no. There was a lot less money to play with and it was rare if a team was able to make money each season. Most of the time, they lost money due to paying player salaries. They were more than generous with salaries in order to keep the better players. Interestingly enough, within a few hours after this article came out, I was contacted by two family members of Jeffersons players.
