Paul Tagliabue endorses Kemp for the Hall of Fame
KRC replied to Beerball's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I think Magee was more bent about it becoming public than anything else. Keep in mind that most, if not all, of the members of the selection committee are members of the PFWA. The PFWA fights to make sure the teams do not keep secrets and that they open things up for public consumption via the media. These same members make sure that the HOF selection process is kept secret and is not available for public consumption. They are hypocrites. Their lack of knowledge of football history would be exposed if people actually knew how little they know.[/rant] The bit about Horrigan sending the letters is an indication that the Hall supports their candidacies has no merit, IMO. Anything that gets sent to the Hall is forwarded to the selectors. Horrigan is a Buffalo guy, so he obviously has a lot of knowledge of Kemp. If asked, he is more than willing to give opinions. However, that does not mean that he speaks fr the Hall. I give my opinions on worthiness of candidates, but that does not mean that I speak for the PFRA unless I specifically say so. -

Publicity. He has the name recognition and can get his opinion out there. The more he can try to get people on board, the better chance he has of getting Kemp inducted. The problem he has is that the seniors committee is looking for new information to prove his worthiness. Obviously, they did not feel that he was worthy in the past. A new argument needs to be brought forth in order for the committee to reconsider him. The only thing new is that a former NFL commissioner is now on his side. I am not sure that is enough to sway the committee. Of course, they put Marshall Goldberg up last year, so I do not have much faith in the committee. -

Not unusual. He can send a letter to Horrigan to nominate someone, just like the rest of us. Any person can nominate any player for HOF induction. Tags is no longer a commissioner, so he is allowed to be biased. Personally, I do not think that Kemp deserves to be in the HOF. -
Steve Tasker among "10 best players not in Canton"

If you elect Davis, you have to let in Spec Sanders. Sanders was far better than Davis. I do not think that the selection committee wants to open that can of worms, by letting in people with shorter careers. -
Overall, I would say "Well Done!" A few comments: -Are you going to have a history section? -I agree with the comments about getting Poz off the banner. It might be best to put retired players up there. How about just HOFers? I will leave it up to you as to whether OJ goes on the banner. Other than that, it looks relatively clean. The ads detract from that clean look, but there is not much that can be done about it. Ads are necessary and they are designed by the advertiser. I think you did your best to incorporate them is such a way to please the advertiser, but to minimize the impact on the visitor.

Well, then you will be happy to know that I am writing a book on that AAFC franchise, which includes exclusive interviews with the surviving members of the team, as well as interviews with other players from the AAFC. I am expecting to have the writing done early next year. I am also trying to get that franchise inducted into the Greater Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame. Hopefully, that will happen next year. It is my contention that the current Bills franchise would not exist if it were not for the Bills of the 1940s. [/shameless self-promotion] If there is something specific that you want to know about them, let me know. PM me your name and address and I will put together a little care package for you. -

Could you give me more detail on the AAFC stuff you purchased. I might be able to help you with more, if I know what you already have. -

That's nice. Past performance does not guarantee future success. If you were to ask me who I would rather have right now, I would take Rogers. Favre has nowhere to go but down. His age also plays a factor. You now have a team who is fully behind Rogers. If Favre were to come back, you and I both know that the locker room would be split. Some would not be happy with the way he has been handling the retirement/non-retirement/am I coming back/am I not coming back fiasco. Favre's act is getting old and that is going to enter the locker room. If Favre had said back in March that he was returning, I would be fine with his return and Rogers could sit another year. He didn't. Favre needs to stay retired. Prove it.
-
I doubt it. With him jerking the Packers around every year and hearing the criticism associated with said jerking around, I am guessing that Favre wanted to avoid the criticism this year. As a result, he retired in March. Now, it gets close to training camp and the bruises from last year have healed, he wants to be back. The problem is that the Packers are tired of him jerking them around. You can't blame them. Eventually, the fans are going to tell him to just go away. Some have already started and others are starting to lean that way. If he starts pulling the same stuff with another team, the fans will quickly turn on him. He does not have the legacy with other teams like he does with the Packers. They will not be as forgiving. I don't think that he went into this to try to get released. He is only asking for the release because he screwed things up with the "Am I retiring/Am I not retiring/I'm retired/I'm not retired" stuff. Honestly, he has nobody to blame but himself. If he was truly worried about his legacy, he should just stay retired.

Yeah. You mentioned it when we were in Pittsburgh.

Plenty of people on this board have connections with ex-players. It's just funny that a person who is willing to put up countless millions of dollars to buy a franchise is willing to go through someone who goes to an internet message board to ask, "So, who do I talk to about buying the Bills?"
-
Exactly.

Piccone was always fun to be around. Played golf with Frank Lewis. Van Pelt and Rutkowsi were also nice.

pwned. Absolutely. A fantastic guy and a lot of fun to talk to. I had the opportunity to talk to him a few times before he passed away. I remember being at a charity auction with him. There was an autographed Sabres jersey up and nobody was bidding on it. Finally, he chimed in and bid on it and won. I asked him afterwards if he was a Sabres fan. He said, "No, not really. I just did not want to see the jersey not get enough bids. It's for charity." I think he spend over $200 for it. Class is definitely the right word to describe him.

What Bills' collectible(s) do you value the most?

Same here. I stopped mine a little later than you, but it is complete from 1960 to about 2000 (maybe 1999). I guess the highlight for me (at least for the current Bills franchise) would be the helmets. I have all helmets used from 1960 to the latest, including the throwback Red with white standing buffalo. All are in mini and full size and in cases. I also have all four Super Bowl footballs. I am also complete on media guides from 1960 to about 2004. What I like the most in my collection overall is the stuff from the original franchise, including game programs, media guides, photos and game films. I guess the time I have spent interviewing the players from that era has made that stuff personal to me. -
Too many to mention individual stories. Tom Day was awesome. Had some beers with Ted Cottrell. Didn't like Ron McDole. Others I met were were Ralph, John Butler, Kelly, Butch Byrd, Al Bemiller, Charley Ferguson, Ernie Warlick, Booker Edgerson, Carl Byrum, Jack Kemp, Darryl Talley, James Lofton, Billy Shaw, Mike Stratton, Leonard Smith, Don Beebe, Marty Shottenheimer, Lou Saban, Wade Phillips, Charlie Joiner, Marv and many others I can't remember right now.
