  1. Alright, reading the previous responses makes me believe that my viewpoint is in the minority, at least on this board, but I'm a mom, a teacher, and a coach and I would not be able to live with myself if I didn't say something with the possibility that maybe ONE of you might open up your eyes. Some of you really need to grow up. Providing alcohol for your kids in a supposedly "safe" environment has to be the stupidest things I have ever heard. You are an ADULT, not a child. You need to show kids that there are ways to have fun that does not involve alcohol. You are not their friend you are their PARENT. You need to be clear that underage drinking is not OK. How else will your own child ever develop the sense to stop themselves from doing something stupid unless you are clear in what your expectations are? Talk about mixed messages in letting them (and countless others' peoples kids) drink in your own home. Also not ALL kids drink....and if you keep telling kids that ALL kids drink, then what about the ones that really don't want to? What about the kids who are trying to stand up for themselves and not succumb to peer pressure? Here are a couple of sections from the great book by Michael Bradley titled "Yes, your Teen is Crazy!!!" I recommend this book for anyone with teenagers or preteens. They aren't directly about letting kids drink in your home, but they are related to the topic. First, some stats about alcohol as a drug (it seems to have gained the reputation that it isn't a drug), and then something about being a parent and not a friend to your teen. "Believe it or not, your child stands a radically better chance of dying from booze than from marijuana, heroin, cocaine, and hallucinogens COMBINED.....Annually, 45,000 of our teen children get their bodies broken in booze-related driving accidents. And every year we bury 10,000 of our sons and daughters who drink very well and drive very badly. These numbers make the "drug" body count pale in comparison. Last year we lost far more of our children to alcohol poisoning and drunk driving than were stolen from us by heroin, cocaine, ecstasy, accidents, and illness COMBINED - so somebody, please explain to me how alcohol is not a dangerous drug!" and later in the book: "Good parents of adolescents are definately not cool. They're usually annoying, corney, and about as contemporary as dinosaurs. They know that parenting means loving your kid enough to have her hate you at times, because your primary concern is for the long-term welfare of your child, and not for her approval. Good parents know that raising an adolecent is, by definition, a conflict-based relationship. they would like to be friends with their kid, but they choose to be a parent first. Believe it or not, that's the way your adolescent secretly wants and needs you to be, even though she ridicules you endlessly. That's because dinosaur parents are usually also reliable and consistant. They fulfull promises and seem to take a heck of a lot of abuse without yelling back. They show up. They teach much more by example than with words." I'm off my soapbox....
  2. Yes, many schools do this for all of their athletes. I was a track athlete back in the '80s at a Big Ten school and had a full tuition scholarship. I paid my own room and board while I was competing, but once my eligiblilty was exhausted, they gave me a full ride - tuition plus room and board - to finish my degree in my fifth year. The funds for this comes out of a different pool, so that's why I got a better deal in my last year. (It didn't count against the school's limits of scholarships per sport.) I assume this is still the case so kids can finish their degree. Not all take advantage of it though...especially in the big name sports.
  3. Way to go, Marv! I thought we would be lucky to get one third out of it, and to come away with two thirds plus a seventh, all the better. I too, think there is already something in the works with one of the other backs we brought in. I'm glad to be done with McGahee...Time to move on. Three more picks! (Although we'll have to wait a year on one.) With Marv in charge, it's so nice to have that feeling of "what's going to happen next?!" again. It's going to be a fun ride!
  4. Here's a mention: http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/6290830
  5. Well, I've gotten to see them all, as I live out of state band have Sunday Ticket. Who I feel bad for is people like my parents....pushing 80 years old and not able to attend games in person any more. They had season tickets from back in the AFL days until the late '90s. It stinks that they can't watch the game....
  6. My pet peeve is people putting apostrophes in their plurals....It just irritates me that they don't know when to put them in. It's not the Bill's.....It's the Bills. It's not chicken wing's, it's chicken wings. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!
  7. I'm going with my husband, my brother, and his son....ALL Bills fans! We're coming from the K'zoo/Battle Creek area too (Augusta) and are picking up my brother in Saline. We plan on driving in, but not sure where we will park. Let me know what you decide and I'll see what the rest of my group wants to do. I'm wishing I could go to Soldier Field this weekend, too. Boy, that would be a great double weekend!
  8. Yeah, my Hawkeyes did not look like the dominant team people expected. They really are much more dependant on Tate than we thought. (He didn't play due to an abdominal strain). Iowa's had trouble in September in the past and seems to get better as the season goes on. I must say, Syracuse is better this year...They will win some games. I question the play calling, especially towards the end...Why go with a different running back at that key time? And what about that trick play on the punt? Kinda does remind me of Mularky. Hoping the Hawks can regroup for Iowa State next weekend.
  9. The xc invitational was Saturday! (My daughter is running on my team!) Hope all is good with you.. Say hi to Ponda. I'll try not to give the Bills any bad Karma next weekend....No soccer games!
  10. Steve- I thought that I was the only one with bad karma! I had to take my son to his soccer game, so was walking out the door as we went for it on fourth down, only to be stopped. So I leave, with the Bills on top by 10 and still feeling pretty good...I had the game Tivo'd, I'd watch it later. Since I'm in Michigan, I had no radio coverage other than ESPN radio updates. So I sit in my car as the soccer teams warm up, having to listen to bits and peices of the Bills collapse..... Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr! I think it was all my fault for leaving.... Sorry.
  11. Haven't heard anything about this game on here.... I'm an Iowa grad/WNY native, so I was excited when this game got put on the Hawkeye's schedule. Does Syracuse have anything to give the Hawks a game? The Hawkeye tandem of Drew Tate and Albert Young are fun to watch, and it's always a pleasure watching Ferentz and his coaching staff reload with young talent. There are some young guys just waiting for their chance to play. What's the word in Syracuse about this game?
  12. Damn.....Ravens here in Michigan as well. Grrrrrrrrrr.
  13. Hey, Bills #21 Iowa, could there be another combination Bills/Hawkeye fan out there? I thought I was the only one! I'm a WNY native and an Iowa grad. Go Matt Bowen!
  14. I think fans are freaking out a little too much right now. The fact is, we really don't know how things are going to turn out. Let me tell you a little story, and I'm sure there are others just like it.... I'm an Iowa grad/fan, and a few years ago, when the venerable Hayden Fry retired, everyone expected Bobby Stoops, the former Iowa player and hot shot defensive coordinator for Florida, to come in and take over as head coach. He was the perfect fit, a match made in heaven. Well, Stoops went to Oklahoma, the AD hired Kirk Ferentz. Kirk wasn't an unknown, he had been Iowa's tight ends coach back in the '80's, but he was just an assistant on an NFL team whose only head coaching experience was with the Maine Bears. He brought in assistant coaches who no one had heard of, from places like Harvard, Vanderbilt, and Allegheny, not exactly football powerhouses. The whole state of Iowa was in an uproar, people were so angry and bitter that the AD was so cheap not to lure Stoops. Fans were ticked, and gave Ferentz such a hard time over the next few years, especially as Stoops won the National championship. Well, over the next few years, Ferentz won the fans over, and then some. He built a program with class people, and most of his entire staff is still with him. He is one of the most highly respected coaches out there and is loved by fans and players alike. I realize this is college, not the NFL, but it just goes to show you that WE DON'T KNOW how this will turn out. I'll ALWAYS be a Bills fan, and I'll ALWAYS have hope.
  15. Guys, there are several of these games and the big one is the Senior bowl, which is NEXT WEEK. This afternoon is the Shrine Bowl, tonight is the Hula bowl, and next week is the Senior Bowl.
  16. Uhhhhhh.... that's the Shrine Bowl. The Senior Bowl is next week.
  17. Look up at the pinned messages for this thread.
  18. Really. I don't see how waiting a couple extra days and talking to some more people can be a bad thing. I feel that at least Marv is being thorough and seeing what is out there. Also, perhaps an offer was made and turned down, for all we know. I don't believe we hear about those. Fans out there that are just tired of waiting need to relax and let Marv work. I'm also not worried about the assisant coaches getting snapped up. These guys, especially the guys who have been head coaches before are surely already talking to assistants they want and telling them to hold off going with someone else...
  19. THIS is the guy we need to get as Strength and Conditioning coach. Chris Doyle-Iowa Hawkeyes
  20. Philbin used to be Kirk Ferentz's offensive line coach at Iowa.
  21. I think another thing that we're not mentioning is that one of these guys is going to have to WANT to coach the Bills. I'm sure that in their interview, they are checking out the situation in Buffalo as much as Marv and Ralph are checking them out. It's a two-way process that has to get worked out. Not every coach would want to walk into the Buffalo Bills situation. That being said, I think that the Bills job is better than the Raiders or the Lions.
  22. I hope he gets an interview. His bio is impressive and he seems just what we need. Offensive side of the ball, smart, been in the NFL a long time. I hope he gets a shot at the job.
  23. Ferentz article from yesterday He says it was never in.....
