Excellent idea. Let us know how the upgrade goes. -
Free Windows 10 Upgrade Beginning 7/29: Who's in?
The Dean replied to 26CornerBlitz's topic in Off the Wall Archives
I'm advising my clients not to rush into it. I always take a "wait and see" attitude with a new Windows OS. Let other work the bugs out. Most of my clients love their Windows 7 machines, and I'm not sure if I will ever advise them to change the OS. I certainly wouldn't do anything to my main Windows 7 machine. I have a spare laptop that I will upgrade, just so I can play around and get used to Win 10. For my Windows 8.1 clients, it depends. Most of my clients are pretty satisfied with the OS, once I tweaked it for them. But others still don't seem to like Windows 8.1. For them, I guess the upgrade is likely. I have one client whose computer has not successfully upgraded to Windows 8.1. Microsoft has advised as has HP and we have spent many hours working on the situation. (God how I despise HP.) No go. So she has been using Windows 8, with no complaints. Perhaps she will be my first client to try the upgrade, though I am worried the upgrade to Windows 10 will also fail and the whole thing might go sideways. Had a few friends and clients get their PCs direct from the Microsoft store. You are correct, the computers were free of most crapware (still a couple useless manufacturers' programs, but minimal). Overall a very good experience. Price was right, too. -

One correction to my post. I'm not sure why I used North Carolina, as this heinous act took place in South Carolina. SC does not have open carry. But they have a very lax concealed carry law, where apparently no gun training is required. http://www.usacarry.com/south_carolina_concealed_carry_permit_information.html They require a NICS background check, which is, a very quick and minimal thing. Were parishioners able to legally carry firearms into that church, there is just no telling what their abilities or competence might be.

Certainly no Chandler fan, but obviously Belicheat doesn't think he "sucks". By many accounts he looks to be the Pats* #2 TE this year. If he sucked that bad, the Pats* could have just picked up a UFDA TE this offseason for less money. "Not great" is different than "not very good". Both are far from "sucks". The Pats* didn't get where they are by keeping guys who "suck".

Very cool.

Unless there is another vet QB for the Bills to pick up, it is absurd to think Whaley will go into yet another season without a seasoned veteran QB in the fold---just in case. That would be a real head-shaker.

I'm not sure who/what you are responding to. I NEVER suggested we wouldn't need police. I said, if the "only thing that can stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun" there would be no need for police NEGOTIATORS. Apparently some think bad guys with guns can only be stopped with gun violence. Like you, I'm fine with some citizens owning guns. I actually support the 2nd Amendment, though I believe there should be a reasonable interpretation as to what that means, as there is with the 1st Amendment. But who's going to hand pick the people who might have guns in that church? I think you are a bit mistaken how much training it takes to get a concealed carry license---at least in Florida. Take a look at this: http://citrusccw.com/concealed-carry-classes/faqs/ One gun safety class is the only training necessary. As far as I can tell, no psychological exam, no extensive background check. It is good for 5 years and, as far as I can tell, can be renewed with no further training. Certainly police forces have better, and more frequent, training for their officers. I know Florida's requirements are a bit more stringent (though probably not stringent enough). And, why do you assume a person with a gun would have a concealed weapons license? North Carolina is an open carry state. And the push these days is to expand open carry to places of worship, bars, etc. (Except gov't buildings, it seems. Even politicians most supportive of lax gun regulation don't want to be subject to citizens carrying weapons in their place of business.) The idea ordinary citizens carrying guns, at the time a criminal has a gun, would typically be qualified to take competent and responsible action is absurd. IMO. For personal self defense, such as in your home, I can understand society allowing that risk. But in public places, where groups of people are gathered, I'm certainly not willing to give some random mook off the street the OK to shoot. We already have cops making terrible decisions with guns. Imagine the outcome if we get regular folks into the act.
-
Police officers who carry guns are trained to shoot and to handle stressful situations. The same cannot be said for any random citizen who gets his hands on a gun. It is completely possible, and perhaps somewhat likely, someone without this training could shoot back, miss and kill someone. Hell, this happens with "trained" officers. All it takes is two shots to incapacitate the perpetrator, or kill two other innocent people. Can you imagine the aftermath if two people were killed by fellow parishioners, even if it resulted in fewer overall deaths? Then it isn't just the result of some wack job criminal, the community would have to live with knowing parishioners were killed by their fellow "sane" church members. And where did I say police weren't (often) reactionary? What's the alternative? A police state? This country had the kind of self-policing you suggest for many years. How did that work out?
-
I sincerely doubt either of those guys is truly on the bubble. But I suppose stranger things, than Rodak being right about something, have happened.
-
True. Or it could have resulted in more deaths if armed parishioners started taking pot shots. A shoot-out in church probably isn't the best case scenario in instances like this. Not everyone who owns/carries a gun is an expert shot. And if the only thing that can stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun, I suppose there is no more need for negotiators on police forces. Bring back the Wild West!

Thankfully, you don't get to make the rules. You do realize people are wrongfully convicted of murder, right? And if death becomes the automatic punishment for anyone found guilty of murder (pretty barbaric I think), don't you think the conviction rate will drop dramatically?

Terrelle Pryor is now a WR; Claimed by Browns

He CAN catch! I have to agree with C. Biscuit. I think he's a long shot to make it, but I wish him luck. He always seemed like a pretty good guy. -
Really? Fantastic. Van is the man.

This may pose a problem for Pryor: http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/06/20/terrelle-pryor-on-playing-another-position-i-dont-know-how-to-catch/ -
Finally watched it tonight, right after the show on Shaq and Dale Brown. While I wasn't a Duke fan. A friend (sort of) from high school became a total butthead while attending Duke. Duke this, Duke that. But I respected the BB team and certainly rooted for them against the Fab 5. But I never hated Laettner. But after watching the special, I get it. He really was an arrogant bully. Confidence is great, arrogance is not. Contrasting his personality to Shaq's really put a spotlight on how easy it was to hate Chris Laettner. Shaq came off as very humble and thankful. Chris as, well, a frat boy jerk. Well it does jive with the bully image, IMO. Bullies tend to be cowards. Pick on those weaker than them, but run from real danger.
