NEW HEAD COACH: Rex Ryan! It's Official!
The Dean replied to K D's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Fair enough. And I'm sure, after what went down, many of his players and fellow coaches feel the same. The question I have is, how did they feel about him when they thought he was returning? Rumor has it he was offered an extension by Pegula, So i find the talk of nobody at OBD likening him hard to believe. I'm a bit confused. I know of no examples of Rex running from fisticuffs. But I'm not sure if that was your question. I'm also not sure I understand the Schwartz or Marrone hate (other than being upset the way Doug left the team). I have to ask (please don't be upset if I am mistaken here), is English not your first language? You have a very different style of writing. Maybe it's just me today. Bills fandom ain't for sissies. -

Well it is clear he has no love for the Bills. But in journalism fandom shouldn't even come into play. You should'ht have to be a fan to write about a team, nor should you be precluded from that if you are fan of another team. The bottom line is Rodak sucks because he sucks. If he didn't suck his Pats* fandom would be a non-issue in this assignment. -

But I actually like Criminal Minds. (But not as much as I like Hunter.) You seem to be bunching a lot of complaints together here. Some of which have nothing to do with whether he was liked (generally) by his players, while he was HC of the Bills. Some of the comments about Marrone around here remind me of a high school girl after a break up. "He was so mean to me. I never liked him. And I'm SOOO upset he didn't take me to the prom." First of all, I toss out that pre-season stuff, especially neither you nor I know exactly what went on. As for the guys who he didn't play, well---duh! Sure some guys hold a grudge. Who's the player that, after leaving the Jets, and landing elsewhere said, "I am finally being coached"? The mass email has ZERO to do with how his players felt about him while he was their HC (which was the point here). If the players hated him, they'd simply be glad he was gone, no? Definitely what the Bills needed. I was kind of hoping they would bring in a guy like Hank Stram toward the end of Knox's reign to take over. -

You can't. It's a moronic idea. -

Chuck did what he did. Rebuilt a terrible team into a good respectable team. But he wasn't the guy to get you to the next level, unfortunately. Like Marty Schottenheimer, his sphincter tightened up during the playoffs and he was WAY too conservative. Ground Chuck still was one of the Bills better coaches. -

Saban, the second time around and Knox were both pretty big guns. Rex is a big name. But he has yet to prove he is a big gun as a HC. This But, other than his personality, it IS Dick Jauron. -

First of all, you have as much of a right to call me out at anyone. Number of posts don't matter. And you ask a good question (I HATE that!). The fact is, there is no one HC candidate I was in love with, other than Cowher--and he isn't coming. I had mixed feeling about Shanny after his Washington debacle, but I would have accepted him willingly. A top OC (as it is really the offense that needs to be addressed at this time) would have satisfied me to some extent. A guy like Kubiak, an offensive coach who has had both success and failure, as a HC intrigued me. Let's face it. Other than Cowher, no available person has #1 NFL HC experience and #2 Been successful at every stop (and most every year) under various conditions. Either you are gambling on a college HC, a NFL coordinator or a HC that failed somewhere at some time. The reason I say "hold my nose" for Rex is he is a meathead, a mook, a blowhard---and I don't like those things in a person, let alone a HC. He craves the spotlight and competes with his players for praise and publicity. He makes everything about HIM. He's a braggart, even when he is getting his ass kicked. I hate guys like that. And I hate that the Bills head coach is now a guy like that. Add to that, I have the idea Rex thinks he is doing Buffalo and the Bills a favor by being their head coach. He got a five year deal, I assume at very big money, when he has yet to really prove he is HC material. Finally, and this is really petty of me, he comes from a family of overrated meatheads. His father, a great DC, was a crappy HC who thought he was the second coming. And his brother publicly back-stabbed his boss in Oakland. I hold my nose because I can't sand the Ryan stench. Does that answer the question? -

In a draft full of crappy QBs, spend all the picks on QBs. BRILLIANT! I'm curious. How do you give each enough time to know if any are worth a damn? The fix this year is Guard, IMO. That's a position they should be able to fix with numbers. -

Why were the Bills players upset when announced he was leaving? Why did they play so hard for him. I think the idea the players didn't like Marrone is absurd,. Carroll is smug. I'm not a big fan of smug, but it is better than blowhard. Agree 100% LA. If it's the Bills bus, I'm on it. Even if Rex is driving. And i'm praying (figuratively, of course) we get to our destination unscathed. -

Swagger, on the way to a four win season, is a bad look on anyone. Bills fans complain that Marrone had a big ego, but his ego is peanut size compared to Rex's. -

Well, I'm no Rex fan but it is hard to argue he wasn't the top "name" coach available. Dad was a HC, he and Rob top DC and Rex, as you say, was a HC in NYC. So yes, he is a top name. But that's just saying he is the biggest celebrity, not the best coach. I see this as Pegula trying to make a big, un-Bills like, move. The only thing is, it is a very Bills-like move in that they once-again hired a failed HC. This time they just paid a lot of money for one with a "big name". Hopefully this isn't a mistake. If it is, hopefully Pegula learns from it. No doubt. -

How is this different than The Bills? Yet the Bills managed to win more than twice as many games as the Jets last year. And, for the record, I think the Jets quit in many games in 2014. They did rally to save Rex's job though---oh, wait-- Yes, I know. I love your optimism (though I can't figure out where it comes from) and I hope you are right. Personnel as in drafting players. He wants control of the roster. Good luck. It takes a few more brain cells than I imagine Rex has to be a good GM. I hope you are right about his "ability". But why do you fell that way? Where has he "proven" he has those skills? Rex is a media fabrication as a HC. He was an outstanding DC, like his father. But he hasn't' shown he has what it takes to be a good HC. But the media loves his bombastic style---and so do some fans, apparently. I simply can't see how that translates to WINS. As far as I can tell, many if not most, of the great HCs are fairly quiet and don't' make spectacles of themselves. http://youtu.be/s9JqbCH4aVw?t=2m12s -
Especially with a media whore like Rex. One of the worst things for a team, IMO, is for the HC to demand the spotlight.

Great plan! Give the keys to a guy who has NEVER been in charge of personnel. Because HCs trying to do both their job and the GM job usually works out to well, -

So if Rex keeps Schwartz as DC and doesn't try to change the D----and obviously keeps his hands off the Offense, as he is a proven disaster on that side of the ball---he can be in charge of everything else. His hand can be all over press conferences, bold predictions and women's feet. Perfect! -

The guy took the an option available to him. And I have read no credible report on how he "pissed all over the team", though I see people accusing him of that. But either way, that plays ZERO role in what kind of coach he was, or was not, while he was with the team. -

I'm typically fairly optimistic about Bills moves. I try to remain free of the relentless negativity, while also not swilling the Kool Aid. I've been accused by many, as being too optimistic and positive in the past. So, I REALLY hope I'm wrong. And I am trying to find something positive in this hire. But it's hard for me to see. Our problem is on the offensive side of the ball, and Rex has NEVER been a factor in the offense---or maybe even a detriment to the offense. This reeks of a media/PR hire to me. With that said, I root for the laundry. I will hold my nose and root for the Bills even if the stench of Rex wafts from the sidelines. BTW, I have two friends who are big Jets fans. Both have started rooting for the Bills the past two years because they couldn't root for Rex or Vick.
