  1. While sad, I don't believe it's unusual for a restaurant to go under, particularly in the first year. There are some folks on this board in the hospitality industry who could share their knowledge. Not that I disagree WNY is in dire straits, but one pub failure is just a blip.
  2. Congratulations! I got a single sister in Rochester who's an M.D. if you're interested... :-)
  3. I have the same problem - it goes away completely when I reduce carbs. Also consider dairy products a possible culprit. I echo the other suggestions about avoiding coffee (I'm down to one cup) and aspirin. For some people changing diet doesn't work, but I am pleased to say that for me, if I keep my carbs low I can actually eat jalepeno-stuffed olives without a second thought. Good luck.
  4. link to mid-late 1990's report. Some interesting stats.
  5. I'm proud to know this man I've posted this before, here's another take.
  6. Bush's buddies in the financial world are just ITCHING to get their hands on "retirement" funds. Stands to reason since many corporations are phasing out standard pensions and these companies now have to deal with the individual consumers instead, something they're not used to. It's not that simple of course. As usual the truth lies somewhere in between. The system needs to be fixed, but it's not on the verge of collapse. But hey, Bushistas have learned that modern Americans, apparently, are chickenshit cowards who cave in the minute a crisis appears on the horizon. So who can blame them for creating a convenient crisis?
  7. I didn't say any of that. They DID shoot him twice in the chest after all. And they could have shot him in the head, or shot him dozens of times. But they didn't, and that's good. I'm not going to second-guess because I wasn't there. My point is that out and out killing of an unarmed, mentally-ill person is not the same as killing a vicious, sane sociopath with murder in his heart. So sorry to rain on your pissy parade. And the guy could die anyway. Sad to say he'll probably be better off. I feel for the officers, and I feel for him.
  8. With credit to the New York Times, which requires a login many of you don't have. This is better than the Tinky-Winky scandal. Of course it would be better -for them - if they actually knew what they were talking about. But why let the truth ruin their fun? ========================= By David D. Kirkpatrick, New York Times WASHINGTON - On the heels of electoral victories barring same-sex marriage, some influential conservative Christian groups are turning their attention to a new target: the cartoon character SpongeBob SquarePants. "Does anybody here know SpongeBob?" Dr. James C. Dobson, the founder of Focus on the Family, asked the guests Tuesday night at a black-tie dinner for members of Congress and political allies to celebrate the election results. SpongeBob needed no introduction. In addition to his popularity among children, who watch his cartoon show, he has become a well-known camp figure among adult gay men, perhaps because he holds hands with his animated sidekick Patrick and likes to watch the imaginary television show "The Adventures of Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy." Now, Dr. Dobson said, SpongeBob's creators had enlisted him in a "pro-homosexual video," in which he appeared alongside children's television colleagues like Barney and Jimmy Neutron, among many others. The makers of the video, he said, planned to mail it to thousands of elementary schools to promote a "tolerance pledge" that includes tolerance for differences of "sexual identity." The video's creator, Nile Rodgers, who wrote the disco hit "We Are Family," said Mr. Dobson's objection stemmed from a misunderstanding. Mr. Rodgers said he founded the We Are Family Foundation after the Sept. 11 attacks to create a music video to teach children about multiculturalism. The video has appeared on television networks, and nothing in it or its accompanying materials refers to sexual identity. The pledge, borrowed from the Southern Poverty Law Center, is not mentioned on the video and is available only on the group's Web site. Mr. Rodgers suggested that Dr. Dobson and the American Family Association, the conservative Christian group that first sounded the alarm, might have been confused because of an unrelated Web site belonging to another group called "We Are Family," which supports gay youth. "The fact that some people may be upset with each other peoples' lifestyles, that is O.K.," Mr. Rodgers said. "We are just talking about respect." Mark Barondess, the foundation's lawyer, said the critics "need medication." On Wednesday however, Paul Batura, assistant to Mr. Dobson at Focus on the Family, said the group stood by its accusation. "We see the video as an insidious means by which the organization is manipulating and potentially brainwashing kids," he said. "It is a classic bait and switch."
  9. I'm only taking issue with your statement about liberals taking over, because they haven't. Howard Dean, for example, is NOT liberal. Just painted that way. The GOP has also hijacked our language in this case. War is peace. Bad is good. Whatever. As long as people don't look beyond the label it will be that way. So look beyond the label, and admit that if you think like, and agree with, the principles of the Democratic party, you're a Democrat. If you listen to the GOP all but the hardliners ALL talk like Democrats. Why? Because that's what people want. Out of the other side of their mouths they say that Democrats will eat you children, and people listen because Democrats refuse to believe that people are as stupid as they really are.
  10. Agreed. But he does clearly have major issues. Had he been obviously "sane" and his behaviour purely vicious, they probably could have shot him. But shooting a nutcase like that is like shooting a rapid dog - only necessary when the officer or general public is in imminent danger. Of course we all know that the definition of "imminent danger' is verrrryyyyy broad these days..... :-)
  11. I referred to the transcripts. The pictures are snapped and sent back real time either via digital/wireless or extracted from live video feed. Pretty simple thing to crop and post. You'll note they typically stick one up there and then they get "better" over the next 30-60 minutes as more come in. the story - pretty predictable.
  12. I'd imagine if spending time here doesn't make one's gorge rise, watching CNN during a meal is NOTHING.
  13. My husband wears "butes" with his suits. He also wears Mr. Potato-Head ties, Homer Simpson Ties, Buffalo Bills ties, and more. But my husband is cool and can carry it off with panache. Few people can. Must be that military bearing ...
  14. Liberals haven't taken over the Democratic party. Goodness, they're just Republican Lites. The Republican party has swung so far to the right that they make a moderate Democrat look like a wild-eyed radical. When in fact it's the GOP who's radical.
  15. Well the thing about Tipper is that she wasn't trying to get stuff removed from the shelf, merely labeled as containing language that parents may not feel appropriate for their children. It was up to the parents from that point on. They did a piece on this on NPR about two weeks ago. I remember thinking at the time (20 years ago) what an evil puritanical witch she was, but when I heard this piece, especially as a parent, I understand. I remember taking my younger kids to see "Tornado" and was expecting a cuss or two but when my son, who actually memorized the script, yelled "F---!" when that part came, I realized I probably wouldn't have taken them had I known. "Damn" or "hell" aren't great but at least they are better than F---
  16. Men's clothing is just damn boring, period. Yuck. And don't you all recall that according to Jerry Falwell purple means you're a...um...well...homasexshul?
  17. I know. Actually I wasn't trying to be snippy. You're my pal.
  18. They are typically released 20-30 minutes prior.
  19. If I was saying that, I woul d have said it outright. Obviously people will care. People care about a lot of things. YOU may not care. I personally would skim right by a Bible ad and not notice it ... but I do care about repression no matter who does it. My point is that the right recently has made a practice of curbing free speech when it doesn't jibe with their idealogy or platform; and anyone who complains is told to stow it. Now that the shoe is on the other foot I wonder if it will be different. I don't lose sleep over it, but I do think it's funny in an ironic way that they are being served with their own sauce.
  20. link We've seen a lot of conservative pressure (and success) on the media to omit programs or articles they deem unflattering (eg the boring Reagans movie) - let's see what happens because Rolling Stone won't print an ad for a Bible.
  21. Well, the bar needs to be raised after all, otherwise the standards are so low that anyone can crawl under. And there are enough bottom-dwellers here already. They only hunt in packs of course, don't have the guts to stand alone and all like to try to pile on when they can. Then the pat themselves on the back, thinking anyone gives a rat's ass what they say. My jokes are far funnier than RIOs AND I am not a thief.
  22. Oh, RIO's just pissed off because he thought that he was the all-time best at "spewing hate". He hates to see anyone else hog the limelight he considers his.
  23. You disclosed the condition of the car, the buyer had an "expert" inspect it. Tough beans - he's just trying to rattle you. You could offer to refund his money, less a reasonal per diem charge since he drove it for 5 days, and take the car back. I've replaces those trannies and 2400 is about twice what it should cost. I also replaced my timing chain at 30,000 miles so you're lucky you got that much out of it. If you're not included to negotiate then invite him to sue. It's small claims court, you don't need a lawyer, and you'll probably win. Befriend the mechanic who "inspected" the car - unless he's a close friend or relative of the buyer (and willing to lie) he can vouch for the fact that he told the buyer despite the slippage he was getting a deal. Caveat emptor.
  24. You of all people should recognize sarcasm when you see it. It's just typical that when Hollywood supports causes that neocons do not, they're "liberal elitist butting in". But when they use their talent and celebrity to support a cause they neocons deem worthy, you don't hear a peep. Note I'm not saying that the cause isn't worthy, because it is. Just pointing our more rightwing hypocrisy is all.
