Newsweek F*cks America...
blzrul replied to Pine Barrens Mafia's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
So, since a 10-line article in Newsweek (which elicited no comment from the White House at all until a couple of riots happened) is such a big deal, how about the photos of Saddam in his briefs? Way to go US military - take the photos if you must, but leaking them to the press doesn't do much for our image or credibility. Of the Sun's publishing them...well the Sun is a rag, what can I say. But I doubt the military leaked the photos believing they wouldn't appear in the media somewhere, somehow. -
Compassionate Conservatism...Gotta love it
blzrul replied to blzrul's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
You're the one throwing blankets. I clearly stated "Compassionate Conservatism" which is the rallying cry for the 21st-century Victorians who talk out of both sides of their mouths. And I said from the heart of the Red States, which is unarguably where AL is located. I didn't say all Red States are full of hypocrites. They certainly fall short of their goals given their top rankings in divorce and the like, but as Nancy Reagan pointed out she and Ronnie should be respected for their values and not disparaged because their own family didn't measure up. In any event my point indeed was the hypocrisy of making this girl wear the scarlet letter while the guy, with whom 50% of the fault lies, apparently has no guilt in the matter whatsoever to judge by the actions of this school. Jesus would have embraced her. He loves the outcast, the downtrodden and the abused. He has no love for the abusers. -
None of the above. License the technology to IBM or Apple, make sure you get a BIG royalty, and let them worry about it.

Uh DUH - she was a member of the student body NOT AN OUTSIDER. DOUBLE-DUH. -
You go girl! From the heart of the Red States, if there IS such a place: whilst the father of this illegitimate child was included in the high school graduation, the mother was excluded. So she walked across the stage anyway. And the cops hauled her family out. So VERY Christian. Freaking hypcrites.

What is SO FUNNY is how soon the stupid GOP forgets how their crap catches up with them. After FDR's four terms they pushed for term limits for the presidency, only to have it bite them when the balance of power changed 30+ years later they wanted Saint Ronnie to stick around for awhile. Get rid of filibuster - the Democrats WILL be back in power someday, and the GOP will be powerless to stop them. Those who fail to learn from history...etc.

Military recruiters now banned from High School
blzrul replied to jimshiz's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
My husband met a military recruiter week before last on a plane from San Antonio. The guy told him he made a point of approaching people in cars with "support our troops" stickers and was becoming quite discouraged at the fact that so far those people had, without exception, told him no WAY were THEY going to sign up. So much for Supporting the Troops. I guess the bumper sticker is about as far as they're willing to go. -
Newsweek F*cks America...
blzrul replied to Pine Barrens Mafia's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
Hmm. A news magazine prints an article that contains erroneous information from a government official who now states (according to this morning's radio news) that he can't remember where he heard the information. A riot ensures, and people die. A bunch of government agencies produce a bunch of documents that contain erroneous information. Based on that, an invasion occurs, 1600+ American soldiers and tens of thousands of Iraqis die. What's the difference? We hold news magazines to a higher standard than the government of the most powerful country on earth? Wow. So, you're right, where IS the outrage? -
Just what I'd expect. So it's ok for gasbags to denigrate their education and the fact that they're learning about the world outside America (there IS one after all) ... and go unanswered? People are only supposed to "turn the other cheek" when they disagree with your point of view. If someone attacks your position, thought, it's ok to defend it. Need I remind you that America exists because people came here to be able to have the freedom to worship and live without being under the heels of oppressors? And the first volleys of our freedom were fired with words, not weapons. These kids are following in the tradition of our forefathers in offering to have a debate that airs BOTH sides of the discussion. Hey - the gasbag could actually "win" the debate. Being afraid of new ideas and stifling debate is un-American.
-
This ought to be good. The drug-addicted gasbag decided to pick on a bunch of high school kids, assuming that since their curriculum focuses on multiculturalism, they don't know anything about history (in particular WWII). So the kids offered to debate him on history. "Maybe he might be a little intimidated because I don't know his basis for saying we don't know anything," Sarah [a sophomore] said. "But I think he might be interested if he wants to live up to his reputation and back up his ideas so he doesn't look stupid." So far, so response from the Limbaugh camp. I guess they're not used to anyone calling his bluff.

If You Enjoy having Rights....
blzrul replied to Bill from NYC's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
Some companies are now firing people who smoke. I can see that, if a person is so addicted that he or she is constantly going outside for a smoke break, meaning that he or she is not working. However, apparently some employers feel that smoking, period, is an offense for which someone can be fired because of healthcare costs, time off from work (smokers tend to get sick more) etc. I dunno - I don't smoke but it doesn't particularly bother me that I work with smokers. I think that if a person does something on their own time that is not illegal or in any way a conflict of interest with their employment, it's no-one's business. -
You omitted the mayor of Spokane, WA who for years in the legislature led the fight against gay rights and recently was forced out of the closet and is being investigated for using his political office to troll for his partners to homosexual activities. I'm sure it was a big disappointment that he had to cancel out of the big prayer breakfast he was supposed to lead a couple of weeks ago. Didn't Henry Hyde get nailed for an illegitimate child, and another senator (a woman) get caught for nonpayment of child support? They have some really good marketing people who have succeeded in establishing the brand is all. And they count on many American's believing it until they learn otherwise. Just like people have brand loyalty to a product, they'll continue to swallow this pap until they realize they've been had.

Delay is a scum, but the otherside isn't better
blzrul replied to VABills's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
I believe that last year DeLay was reprimanded twice by the ethics committee. The result was that the the committee was purged of all but DeLay supporters. And as we all know the Republicans changed the ethics rules in order to protect DeLay and only backpeddled when the opposition held firm. DeLay is a slimeball. Getting rid of House speakers is pretty routine these days. They get drunk with power I guess, add that to their innate arrogance (and DeLay sniffed all those pest control fumes for years) and you have the bad judgement that results in being targeted. Good riddance to bad rubbish if he goes. These things all have a way of working themselves out. -
An article in this past Sunday's Seattle PI actually dealt with the fact that the US Government is now "allying" itself with Al Jazeera in order to get out the word about "democracy in the Middle East"....and Al Jazeera is apparently reporting same. That is when it exists - what the gov't hails as a major victory for democracy isn't always perceived to be so. But Al Jazeera could be a good tool that could help sway opinion. Like it or not, Al Jazeera is the source of news for the area. Learning to use it is much more effective than railing against it.

This is America. No-one named Feingold will ever win the Presidency, even if he heals lepers and walks on water. Of course, if I really mean that, given the fact that most people here think I am wrong 99% of the time, I'm gonna go ice some champagne now.....on the other hand, I could be being sarcastic. Hard to tell sometimes. That said, he's definitely more attractive as a candidate than John Kerry or Hillary Clinton.
-
huh? I dislike Blair. I think he's slimy and not to be trusted. That said, I'd probably take him over Bush because I think he actually has his own mind and can think for himself, plus the special interest he serves are not a bunch of right-wing religions fanatics and big fat bloated corporations. We hung Britain out to dry in WWII - the Brits have cause to be grateful to Japan for Pearl Harbor. Otherwise, who knows what would have happened....

Classless democratic leader shows the
blzrul replied to Rich in Ohio's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
Not the same situation at all. This guy said negative things about the President, with which at least 58 million people agree. He didn't curse at him and call him names. Neither of the parties spit on each other either. So if people are not upset that the two top guys in America curse their opposition, why should they be upset when the oppostion mocks them? But of course I wouldn't expect you to see outside the narrow little lines within which you view the world. I know it makes conservatives uncomfortable to do so - that's why they're conservative. Thank goodness America's history is full of visionary risk-takers who pushed the envelope. Otherwise the poor conservatives would still all be huddled on the East Coast, too afraid to venture anywhere else, bemoaning their fate, and hanging "witches". -

You are right, they should call him a "Clymer" instead like the President did. Of course he wasn't President then. But if name-calling and really mattered to the populace, he wouldn't BE president after that. So I guess it's just another case of people having nothing else with which to occupy their time. If we ran people out of town on rails for making ignorant comments, there would be a lot of ghost towns. -

The Republicans should just take a the cue from one of THEIR leaders and tell the guy to go !@#$ himself. -
looks like Blair wins in a landslide-

I listened to a report yesterday that discussed the fact (? - you'd know better than me) that the economy in the UK has been very good since the Labor party took control. So perhaps it's partially the "I got mine" syndrome. People vote their pocketbooks. They may not trust Blair, may not like him, but perhaps they think things could be worse. -
Good News on Intelligent Design
blzrul replied to Benjamin Franklin's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
I think there's room for both theories. Even if all life as we know it evolved from one cell of primordial slime, where did the slime come from? It was created somehow...it came from somewhere. Whether it was "intelligent design" that created the slime and the roadmap for evolution, who knows. But what they're doing in Kansas has nothing to do with alternative theories. It has everything to do with the insecurity and intolerance and disdain for science of a handful of extremists. -
He is sort of a freak isn't he? Again - I was never a fan and have watched him morph over the years on the rare occasions he intruded upon my thoughts with some really horrid fascination...or disbelief. As an aside: I am capable of having pleasant conversation with most people. One of my best friends makes VAB and AD look like tree-huggers. But when people are too small-minded to realize that a disagreement is not a personal attack or that a poking fun at "the other side" is not meant to impugn one's manhood or anything else....I can dish it right back. And sometimes, I admit, it's fun to fan the flames, it's sooooo easy sometimes. All I need to do is post and there are some folks who would disagree with me no matter what. How sillly. On this board it's cons v libs, on others it's Bills fans v. Fishstix lovers...whatever. (The difference is if you insult my team, chances are I'll agree with you but point out that your teams stinks as bad, or worse. And with Fishstix, it's the truth too.)

blzrul replied to SilverNRed's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
Soooo if 35 is old for a woman and Bill is 49 and it sounds like you're saying he's old...is Bill a FEMALE?!? I know, I know, but I couldn't resist. -
There are always two sides, it's a chess match and very interesting to me. I am not in the least bit interested in Michael Jackson. I personally think he's a harmless weirdo, but one never knows. I sure don't. But then again I don't care either. But I do enjoy legal maneuverings - not grandstanding though. Perhaps I didn't mention that I worked in the legal field for several years...fascinating.
