1. Josh Reed = Tom Donahoe's biggest draft bust.

309264

I'm amused people forget that before coming to Buffalo TD did have his job in Pittsburgh. If anyone should be called his biggest bust it would be WR Troy Edwards, who he took 13th overall in 1999. Infact Reed and Edwards are very comparable but Reed's put up better numbers then Edwards did through 3 seasons.

2. I personally don't think it's that bad of a trade for the Skins, as if I'm their GM I take Shawne Merriman with pick 9 and then a CB like Justin Miller with pick 25 which could give GW's defense some added weapons to put them around .500 which was good enough to make the playoffs in the NFC last season. To me the Moss for Coles trade was far worse.

3. Well, all it means is that Buchannon isnt going to Washington...I still dont think there is any validity to the Clements trade...considering the Washington Post said there was nothing to it, and none of the major sports media outlets have picked it up makes me think it was just some draft site's little rumor.

309839

The only report I've read is it's not for pick 13 which means the Texans feel that the top two CBs will be gone by pick 13 including one to Arizona, meaning the Henry for Shelton and swapping of 2nds is still realistic possibility.

4. All I know is if we don't get some oline help in here JP's gonna have a long fuggin season and so are we.

308589

While Bennie Anderson wasn't top on my lists in terms of UFA LGs, the only hole I see on the starting O-line is LT. Granted it's a big one but if could land LJ Shelton or Barnes (or Alex Barron), I'd be satisfied.

5. Here's the base salaries for the 5 highest paid CBs for 2006:

Bailey, Roland CB Denver Broncos $5.5 million

Plummer, Ahmed CB San Francisco 49ers $5.5 million

McAlister, Chris CB Baltimore Ravens $5.5 million

Winfield, Antoine CB Minnesota Vikings $4.7 million

Glenn, Aaron CB Houston Texans $4.25 million

Which averages to $5.09 as the least Nate would count against the cap (if franchised and signed with no signing bonus) but considering signing bonus and length of contract it be safe to say Clements would probably count about $6.25 million (ie about $3.75 million more then he counts against the cap this season) against our cap if we do franchise and re-sign him unless we can give him a bigger bonus and smaller base salaries in 2007 etc.

For those that want Rhonde Barber, his base salaries for the next two seasons are $3.75 million and $3.50 for a point of reference.

6. He gave up 5.50 sacks in 6 games last season per Stats Inc prior to that his numbers looked good. Here's a blurb from his CNNSI Predraft Bio

Selected by Chicago Bears in round 3, pick 5 (#66 overall)

Ht  Wt  40  BP  SS  LS  VJ  BJ  Grade

6'5"  303  5.13  27  4.44  -  30.0  8'10"  5.47

He is the brother of Ram's OL Ryan Tucker. He is a solid football player with a positive upside. He can play OT, OG and OC and he got a long look at LOT in the Senior Bowl. He has excellent overall athletic ability for a big man and he shows good short range, balance and feet. He needs a little work on pass protection, but he should be able to develop in that area. He will also need to add a little bulk and strength as he can have some problems with a power DL. However, he has enough AA to be an interesting developmental type prospect.

- I'd personally pass especially with the injury history and us seemingly settled at OG with Villarrial, Anderson, Tucker and L. Smith or Bannan on the short list.
7. Good point.  However QB, kicker, and punter (and no other positions) are positions that have been successfully developed in NFLE.  It's a longshot Thompson will be anything more than a 3rd stringer, but there's still a use for him in that capacity.

307621

I'd rather keep Woodbury and use him on special teams and put Thompson on the Practice Squad. I mean seriously now, how often do NFL teams really go to their 3rd string QBs?

8. I thought Bannan was now listed as a guard on the team and had his number changed to reflect this?

307563

Yeah I saw that on the roster page, so it could indicate we might be looking for someone to replace him but still he is/was our 4th DT who could easily be replaced by a 2nd day pick. Ronald Fields is a guy who could be worth looking at.

9. I do not think it is so much that he is not worth the big bucks. I just do not know if we will have the cap room to keep him around next year.

307598

Then keep him around for the season, franchise him and then trade him. No reason to give him away a year ahead of time. Yet personally, I think he's worth top 5 CB money as think he's the true definition of a franchise CB.

10. How can you be happy with the Bills depth at Wide receiver? What have the backup players shown you to say that?

307570

I see our 3-5th guys as ideal depth guys, potential starters? Not likely but strong depth just the same. As when healthy, Reed is good for 1-3 catches a game which is solid production from a 3rd WR. Aiken improved from showing next to nothing as a rookie to a guy who could compete with Reed to be a 3rd WR. Smith showed he can be a solid punt returner which is good production from someone 5th on the depth chart.

Could I see replacing someone there? Sure but not with a high pick when feel that other positions would be better served as feel Evans and Moulds are as good as a 1-2 punch as there is in the NFL. Heck there are some quality veteran 3rd WRs still available in UFA who could be had for the cheap such as Jerome Pathon, Charles Lee, Tai Streets and Kevin Johnson.

11. The earliest I'd look to take a WR is Round 4. One guy I like is, Fred Gibson of Georgia who was overshadowed by Reggie Brown but definately has the skills to be #1 WR in the NFL and could compete for the 3rd/4th spot with Reed/Aiken as a rookie. If look even later in the draft, a guy like Chris Henry also could be worth looking at as well. Yet I'm happy with our depth at WR right now so might not even be looking at WR until the 2006 draft.

12. All the more indication that we're taking a DT on Day 1.

307530

I can't see us taking a DT on Day 1. If a quality guy falls to Round 4 then maybe but honestly the earliest I could us taking a DT would be Round 5. As would have to think Adams, Edwards and Anderson will get the bulk of the rotation and Bannan, although think he should be replaced, has shown to be a serviceable 4th guy off the bench.

13. I must admit I didn't know that.

How often does a top prospect visit a team that has no first round pick?  I would think that the braintrust at OBD would have better things to do with their time that spend it with a player they have no possibility of drafting.

Unless...nothing up TDs sleeve...

linky

Apologies if this has been posted.

307069

To paraphrase what Bills' chief College Scout Marc Ross stated on the NFL Network, you look as close at the prospects rated #1 on your board as the last one as you never know who will be available at your pick. Look no further then to last year's draft, Randy Starks was a highly thought of DT and many projected him to be taken in Round 1 but he fell all the way to Round 3.

14. Joke--this isn't directed only at you--but the guy has not exactly been a model of consistency.  He will have trouble beating out Teague.

Teague is not the same player who was rehabbing off a knee injury and gave up 12.5 sacks at LT in Denver 4 years ago...he improved as much as anyone on the line last year.  His issues in Denver weren't with speed rushers it was being overpowered--he took a big step up last year in being able to defend against the bull rush...I wouldn't discount him being the best LT we have at the end of camp no matter whom of the current suspects we bring in to compete...

Again just my opinion--but I wouldn't sell Trey short in the LT competition.  Plus I really like Tucker and say Jason Brown, Chris Spencer, etc competition at C....

307076

Minus the 2002 season Shelton gave up about 4.5 sacks per season, which isn't too shabby. I know he gave up 4 last season in 12 games but let's not forget he did that at a new position, RT. So unsure where the idea of inconsistancy comes from. Sure he's not a Pro Bowler but considering the alternatives we have on the roster currently and could potentially get, I think Shelton is the far best thing out there.

I don't like the idea of moving Teague to LT for a variety of reasons, the biggest though is continuity. As right now if keep Teague at C we would then only have new starters at LG and LT as opposed to C, LG and LT if we do shift Teague to LT. In other words, why move Teague when he's not the hole we're trying to fill? I understand Teague at LT and Spencer (or Brown) might be better than a Terry at LT and Teague at C combo but to me the best combo is far and away Shelton at LT and Teague at C. Not only that but with Losman being an inexperienced QB, I'd feel more comfortable with an experienced C maning the line calls etc.

To me Tucker is a good depth player, much like Marcus Price was, he's great in stints but not someone you want to count on full time. Also, while not the best of arguements, if Tucker was so good then why are the Bills his 3rd NFL team? It's not like he was lost as an UFA and paid big money to be here.

As my mock draft shows, I like Jason Brown and will admit like Spencer even more but not enough that either could surpass Teague as rookies but would definately provide depth and possibly replace Teague if he leaves via free agency following the forthcoming season.
