  1. Let's assume Schobel doesn't retire. He's your prototypical 4-3 RDE. Then you have a near-perfect depth rotation of Stroud, Williams, Dwan Edwards (who played mostly 4-3 in Baltimore), and Spencer Johnson. On the left side, you have Kelsay, Maybin on 3rd downs, and maybe Derrick Morgan. Your LBs are set with Veek on the strong side, Poz in the middle, and Davis manning the weak. You've got solid backups in Ellison and Harris. The secondary is set and they're used to the 4-3 concept.

It seems to me that by adding Edwards and Davis, and without having a nosetackle (and I'm assuming that stud 3-4 pluggers aren't freely available through the draft), it's insane to switch to a 3-4 right now - we finally have all of the component parts for a solid 4-3 base. For the first time in a long time, we have depth at LB and defensive line, hopefully with more to come via the draft.

Instead, with no true nose tackle, and with Schobel (if he stays), Kelsay, Maybin and Ellis standing up for the first time in their careers, we're switching defenses. I don't get it - seems like more of the Square-Peg-Into-Round-Hole philosophy that steers this organization off of the cliff every year.

And I don't care if Maybin likes it in April. Really, I'm tired of hearing from, and about, Maybin in the offseason.

What am I missing? Why are we making this change right now?

Since switching to a 4-3 we've always missed out finding a penetrating DT (see Tommie Harris and Warren Sapp). I think for the most part finding quality players for a 3-4 is a little easier with the exception of finding a difference making NT. The reason we're make the change right now as it gives Wilson a build in excuse for us to accept another losing season because we had to rebuild to better fit in with our new HC's philosophy. In other words by rebuilding year after year we never have to do anything but accept mediocrity because that's all Wilson seems to want from his teams.

  2. So you'd take the apparent 4th best OT in the draft over Clausen? The only two OT's that I take over Clausen would be Okung and Bulaga because I feel like they are the only two viable immediate starters at the position. I wouldn't even take Trent Williams over Clausen. Clausen would start day 1 at QB here and I have no doubt that he would be more effective than anyone we currently have on the roster. The guy has a great arm, is an accurate passer, and is elusive enough in the pocket to be effective in any offense.

I would only take one of the top 3 OTs. Okung, Buluga or Trent Williams over Clausen. If we're at 9 and Clausen's on the board but so is someone like Dez Bryant it be a difficult decision but be more apt to take Bryant. As Clausen might be better than any QB we have on the roster but again Gailey's found ways to take teams with lesser QBs and still find ways to win. As again the draft getting the best collection of players. Not to mention I've always been in the belief that a QB benefits more from the talent around him then vice versa.

  3. Yeah, that's a good article. I think you linked me to it when he was first hired? (or maybe it was someone else).

I'm going into the draft, and the season, with high hopes that the Bills finally have their act together as far as philosophies go in the front office and on the sideline. So, I'm trying not to think about that too much (or hope to be proven wrong).

But it makes the draft painless for me because I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt. If they pass on Clausen, I'll be fine with it, assuming they know what they're doing. If they take him, I'll feel the same. The only pick that will drive me nuts is Spiller (it would be a waste of a pick).

I just want the draft to get here already:)

I'm sure someone might have linked but it wasn't me. My biggest issue is I've been crying for an OT every year in the draft and every year we don't take one. This year it finally looks like we might be in the spot to get one and might not take one again which will lead me to argue in 2011 we need to take an OT again.

  4. I've seen numerous and participated in many of the numerous threads that debate whether we should take an OT over Jimmy Clausen threads so I thought I'd start my own. I'm sure much of what I have to say will be a rehash of some of the other threads but hopefully because it's concise and all inclusive it might put an end to the final debate.

First and foremost, let's look at Gailey's history shall we? His QBs in Pittsburgh, Miami and KC were Kordell Stewart, Jay Fielder and Tyler Thigpen respectively. Notice something? Yeah none of them were 1st Round draft picks and were more athletic vs a drop back passer. I know someone's about to say yeah what about Dallas and Troy Aikman, True but he didn't have a choice with Aikman he had to take him and also believed to be a big reason he got fired because Aikman didn't like the offense that Gailey employed. So would Gailey be foolish enough to let his new team take a drop back QB like Clausen? Also Claussen would be another golden child in that if he fails what is Ralph more apt to do? Fire his HC or QB? Looking back at recent history guys like RJ and Trent Edwards seemed to stick around wheras Wade Phillips and Dick Jauron didn't. If Gailey's wise, which I think he is, he'd do his best to convince Wilson he think that an OT is a better pick then Clausen. Secondly, when Gailey named his OC, he named a guy who has a history as a RB coach which seems to indicate that again running is more important to him then passing. So what's the easiest way to fix a running attack that already has two RBs on the roster who've put up 1,000 seasons? A rookie QB you say or an OT? Thirdly, let's say we do take Bryan Bulaga or Trent Williams, and he struggles at LT where can we stick him? While some might not like the answer but it be at RT since we still have a long term hole there since Cornell Green is 34 years old. In comparison where does Clausen go if he faulters? the bench which isn't a good thing. Fourthly many reports have come out with us meeting with Clausen and Tebow but does anyone remember us meeting with Maybin last year? or Lynch prior to being drafted? All food for thought but me I'm in the belief we'll take an OT first and a QB sometime later.

  5. Can a team trade a player for draft picks while the draft is going on?... ie. Say they bills could get a LT from a team for a second round pick but they wanted to make sure they get the QB they want to drop to them in the first round before they draft their second round pick for a current player? is this posible? if the question doesn't make sense let me know.

Once a team drafts a player I'd assume it's like any other league and they own his rights so yeah am pretty sure they could. As think that's what the Giants and Chargers did in the Eli Manning/Phillip Rivers trade a few years ago.

  6. Anyone know why coach was a villain and not a hero?

Probably because Coach's odd behavior. Yet I'm curious if Russell voting to kick off Courtney and not Coach will do anything to him next week. Yet with the previews it might appear JT is going to make a fatal mistake. As count me among the Russell haters. As yes he's a great player but his damn arrogance just angers me to no end.

  7. It jsut makes so much sense. Fill another need and give Campbell a shot with Gailey. If he fails, there will be some good QBs to choose in the 1st round. Then they can come in behind a solid oline with a good defense.

Exactly. Yet I understand where some are concerned that Campbell's a retreat QB but to me I take a chance on him this year instead of drafting a guy like Claussen in Round 1 and give him a much bigger contract and a much bigger risk.

  8. Lee Evans is what Marvin Harrison would have looked like without Payton Manning.

Or maybe he's just another Cris Chambers or Terry Glenn. Who both failed to be bonafide #1 WR despite playing with great QBs like Phillip Rivers or Brett Favre.

  9. Yep - we all wonder how he would have turned out, with a stable qb situation, a better FO and coaching staff. Water over the dam, now. The bits I've heard over the years say he's a decent person.

Personally, I think they should keep him. Last thing that the team needs is another hole to fill, and the more I recall, the more I think it would be a fair $$$ hit to move him on. Dunno.

True it be foolish to move him without replacing him first. Yet again I just don't see him ever being a guy that you can count on to get you a catch four or five passes in a row to move you down the field on a time consuming drive. I mentioned when the offseason started I'd favor trading Lee to a team like the Raiders for a guy like Zach Miller and a 3rd Round draft pick and would do so if only were able to secure another WR yet because guys like Brandon Marshall, Braylon Edwards and Vincent Jackson weren't able to hit the open market it made our options too limited.

  10. He gave Campbell a 1st round tender. if they didn't acquire McNabb, he mostly would have been the starter. McNabb is a HOF QB so you have to make that move. Additionally, Campbell will be highly paid for a backup and you have a chance to get some value for him instead of losing him for nothing.

They also gave Campbell the right to seek a trade which tells me they're willing to part with him. If it would cost us a 4th Round to get him count me in the camp that make that move.

  11. Randy Moss - future Hall of Famer, baggage - fourth round pick

Lee Evans - highly unlikely to be a HOF'er, no baggage - maybe would yield a 3rd or 4th round pick

Why not keep a few of our best players...

Because it's overpaying for mediocrity. I'll admit that I own a replica Evans' jersey but to me he just doesn't make enough plays to be counted on as a #1 WR. As to me a #1 can make between 4-7 plays a game where Evans is lucky to nab 4 catches a game. As I prefer WR that can move the chains and be counted in the redzone. See Andre Johnson prototype. With the continued thought that Lee is a pure #1 is a mistake instead he's a very good #2.

  12. I was the same way until the Alpert episode. After that I convinced myself to just let the story unfold. There's been more good episodes this season I think than any other season. I loved the premiere, the Ben episode, the Alpert episode, and last night's episode.

I've loved the aforementioned episodes too but this one just didn't sit with me. Perhaps because I was subconsciously wanting more for Desmond/Charlie/Daniel.

  13. Could not agree more. The Packers o-line was dreadful last year. Aaron Rodgers threw for 4,434 yards and 30 TDs last year. If Clausen is there, and the they think he's a franchise QB, he MUST be the pick.

Rodgers rode the bench in Green Bay for 4 seasons. It's not like he did all that as a rookie.

  14. I guess I'm in the minority. I don't like Bulaga. He seems to be a bull in the run game, but his pass protection is suspect. I see far too many college D ends getting the edge on him and just barely missing the QB (go watch even youtube "highlight" videos), the NFL ends will take the edge. I just don't think he's a top 10 pick, and in my opinion light years away from safe.

People rave about Bulaga's ability to keep the best DE in the draft, Derrick Morgan, in check. So I'm not sure where you're getting DEs getting the edge on him. In looking at PFW Value Chart, Draft Countdown 2010 Draft Top Overall, NFL.com Draft Tracker, and ESPN/Scout's Inc. all list Bulaga in the upper echelon talent so if he's there again it seems like a no brainer to take him. Of course I'd prefer Okung but also wouldn't mind Trent Williams. As he's gotten similar grades to Bulaga but seems a tad lower which might mean a better chance at getting him at #9.

  15. Odd that only Desmond found his love, meanwhile Charlie and Daniel only have had visions/quick glances of the one's they love(d) perhaps because on the island/normal time line they are dead? *shrugs*

All and all I wasn't overly hyped about the episode. Yes it cleared some things up like that Daniel is indeed the son of Eloise and Widmore and that Penny is his half sister etc. It was nice seeing Charlie but he didn't feel like the one I enjoyed on the island. Even Desmond didn't seem his usual self either. Yes, it did have some heart felt moments but just seemed to be missing something. Perhaps it was me or maybe I'm just looking for more answers then sideways stories.

  16. The Bills had a Pro Bowl LT, and when they dealt him away (and had a revolving door of street FA's making up the line for most of the season), they finished with teh same results, another mediocre season and a top 10 pick.

But did Trent Edwards look better in 2009 or 2010?
