1. I've seen him listed anywhere from 295-304.  He still isn't that big.  I do think he can add more bulk, but I would hope that if we draft an interior lineman, we draft one who already has bulk, decent footwork/athleticism, and a nasty attitude.  Chris Kemoeatu of Utah fits that bill, and could also be available in the 3rd round.

Mathis weighed in at 312 yesterday at the Alabama Pro Day per The NFLexperts (sub req'd) but also of note Bills scouts were not among those listed visiting.

  2. The Value Boards have Baas slipping to early 3rd, and he's listed as the 3rd best Guard. If we want him, we can get him.

I don't understand why he's slipping, he had as good a combine as any OG available. That said if we can land him on draft day I'd be very happy as right now I think he'll be the top OG off the board, most likely in the top 10 of Round 2 and even sneaking into Round 1.

  3. I didn't see anything about the NFL Network having programming specific to the cities it is being broadcasted to.  Are you implying that every NFL city gets customized programming from the NFL Network?

    277153

If you have Digital there is NFL on Demand. On the NFL on Demand I did see highlights of the Bills 1992 & 1993 seasons, there was also that Hey Rookie! Special that covered Mike Williams. Also NFL Total Access on the normal NFL network is a sportscenter type show that does talk about the Bills when their in the headlines etc. Sure it's not indepth as Empire was but I like it.

  4. I can see Josh Reed being shown the door. It would be a reasonable cap savings for a underachiever. If Sam Aiken so much as flounders and this position isn't drafted, then give Drew Haddad a whirl for a 3rd WR. I had a short phone conversation with him thru a family member who knows him. I was impressed with how intelligent the dude was.

    Anybody have a prediction and/or a replacement?

    274584

Haddad isn't even under contract and don't expect him to be re-signed. In terms of Reed, I think you're way off. As next year he's in the final year of this contract and only making 455k. In terms of the 3rd WR spot no doubt they'll be a competition between Reed and Aiken but suspect both will make the final roster unless we bring in a vet for close to the minimum. In looking at the list of UFA WRs some guys that I would consider include Jerome Pathon, Charles Lee and Troy Edwards.

  5. I'll be interested to see a guy I thought they might look to take last year, Shawn Andrews, to see how he recovered from his season-ending injury he suffered in training camp.  Before the injury, he was a monster!  I still vividly remember when the Iggles (team that drafted him) played the Titans in the preseason and Andrews simply dominated the Titans' D-line.  If he can come back anywhere near that level, Philly will have one heck of an OL, one that the Browns could've taken.

    272491

That isn't saying much, the Titans D-line last year wasn't all that great. Kevin Carter hasn't been the same since leaving St Louis, Carlos Hall looks like a one year wonder and the aside from Albert Haynesworth they had a bunch of rookies.

  6. After reading some of the posts after the release of Flutie, I am really amazed at how much people don't like that guy.  How soon people forget that he came in a time when there was talk of the Bills maybe moving.  He came off the bench and saved the season.  The Bills made the playoffs and alas we never had to potentially heard of the LA Bills.  There aren't too many QBs who have gotten a rawer deal that Flutie.  Think about it:  he was coming off a pro bowl season, possibly saved the Bills, light up a Dolphins secondary that was considered one of the best in league and had the team in a position to win or tie (don't remember offhand) til our hall of fame wr makes a bonehead play.  So he comes back again the next year, leads the team to the playoffs again, sits out a meaningless regular season game, RJ shines, and Flutie is told he would be benched.  Are you kidding me???  That may have been the single biggest insult to a player in NFL History.  I hated the Bills at the point.  And in my opinion, as much as it hurts to say, the lateral was poetic justice.  You wouldn't complain about seating behind RJ after all that?  Freakin' RJ!!!  He wanted to play and knew he was behind a guy who didn't give two craps about this team or city.  And ofr hte record head to head, Flutie 1, RJ 0.  Come on now.  Flutie never got a fair shot because of his size (and by the way I'm 6'1" and I'm not canadian, so I'm not biased).  If JP has a season like Flutie had in 1998, we all would be doing back flips.  People are too blinded by size and arm strength.  Me personally, I like winners. Flutie has been a winner at every level.  I believe the guy has a 58 -60% winning percentage in the NFL.  And trust me, I'm the biggest Bills fan there is and I want them to finally win the Super Bowl.  But karma is a serious thing and I believe the curse of Flutie may be upon us.  So hopefully if we give the guy the proper respect for what he did for this team, perhaps we can lift this thing and make the playoffs.  Sorry for the vent but I need to get that off my chest.   0:)  :P

and how soon people forget how well RJ was playing prior to Flutie replaced him. As RJ threw for 231 yards and 3 TDs against the Rams in Week 3 yet the Bills lost because of a defensive collapse late in the game. Then he helped us defeat the 49ers passing for 254 yards and 1 TD. Flutie came in the next week and "saved the season". Stats courtesy of Mr Sports.com

  7. Dan Buenning?  We can do better than him with our 2nd rounder...there will be MUCH better options open to us.  Buenning strikes me as a solid 4th round pick, due to his lack of athletic skills.  Got a good head on him, but I think the Bills could land a player like Evan Mathis with the 2nd rounder, who also is versatile and can play tackle if needed.

But I like the sentiment, its easier to have a rookie guard start than it would be to have a rookie left tackle start *shudder*.

    273085

I agree with what you said infact I'm really high on Mathis and he'd be my top choice if take an OG with our 2nd. Yet in terms of value I would take Buenning later and go with a CB like Corey Webster or Antonio Perkins in the 2nd because if we're truly this bad in terms of the cap this season, I don't see how we're going to retain Nate Clements.

  8. First of all....a question because I didn't follow it that closely....

    - How many years did Trey Teague play for the broncs after they drafted him?  If the answer his "he played 2 years" or something to that effect please be advised that it can take as long as THREE YEARS for a offensive linemen to reach their full potential....thats right....THREE YEARS and that depends if he played as a starter....

    - In how close of proximity was the ACL injury to the "sucky" year he had?  If it was in those first 2 years that has a major impact on his progress

Look fellow bills brothers and sisters....Trey Teague is not my first choice for Left Tackle because I want to see a 320 pound plus athletic run blocking mauler at that position....BUT.....if we dont have any other option it makes sense to move Teague out there to give us "John Fina with some attitude" type player for a year......then you can move Tucker to the center spot.....and draft a LG or find a LG in free agency.......

At least the right side of our line is secure....and we have a few different people who can play center......

Its not the best situation.....but at least we have a mobile QB now that we can move around.....we arent going to need to give 4 solid seconds of protection on EVERY SINGLE PLAY to keep things from falling apart on offense this year......

Now that said....I would like to see both Shelton and Floyd Womak here......and draft our LT of the future in the draft.....

    272715

Teague was drafted in 1998. He rode the bench the entire 1998 regular season. In 1999 he was credited with playing 16 game and starting 4 at LT. Again it's hard to know in which games he gave up sacks etc but if go by sacks by start he gave up 1.50 in 4 which would calculate to .38/game. In 2000 he started the season as a backup but because the starter got hurt in first game Teague was put in season but Teague himself went down in the second game with the ACL injury. 2001 was his first year as a full time starter when he gave up the 11.25 in 16. In 2002 he signed with us and was converted to C. Again Teague might be able to contribute at LT but I'm not for jumbling the line. If we leave Teague at C that would leave us with the Center - Right Tackle side of the line complete. Leaving us a hole at LG and LT.

  9. I think he was a classic example of a decent/good player on a average team. Hilliard would do well here and I like his possession type WR attitude for our #3 spot. If he were on say, the Eagles he may have been a Mohammed type, not a Steve Smith but when a stud like Smith went down he would rise to the occasion.

I wouldnt mind if we got him, I think Id rather draft a guy though.

    272356

In other words he'd be perfect for the Patriots.

  10. I could be wrong, but it appeared that Tillman was a last-minute reach after Deon Grant was taken. That was a mistake.  And I also think it's a mistake to blindly take the best available athlete.

The Bills right now have the 55th pick in the draft. Say a QB is at the top of their list of who's left and an OG is 2nd; if both players are graded fairly close, it only makes sense to take the OG. But if the QB has a significantly higher grade than the OG, then you've gotta take the QB.

I thought Troupe would go higher in the draft last year, he was probably significantly higher on the Titans' board than the next player, so it made sense for them to take him.

    272415

I'll go one step further with your example. We're at pick #55 the Bills have a coice between an OG and a QB. The OG is graded at a 70, the QB is rated at an 80. Significantly the QB is higher as you stated but let's look at the next available OG, he's graded at a 60. Who do you take then? I take the OG rated as a 70 since if we took the QB and waited until the next pick to take the OG there'd be a significant drop off in talent in the position we need more help at. As the draft is the best collection of players total, not the best player with each pick.

It's probably why in 1983 the Bills took Tony Hunter before Jim Kelly, granted Hunter turned out to be a bust but the drop off between Hunter and the next TE (Jamie Williams drafted in the 3rd Round) was probably viewed as a far greater then the drop off between the next QB (Tony Eason or Ken O'Brien or Dan Marino)

  11. It makes sense.  Teague played LT with the Broncos and the Bills have a need there now.  I'm inclined to believe that he's a candidate for the LT spot, with ideally a guy like DeMulling playing center.  Whether or not Teague can be a good LT remains to be seen, but Gibbs thought enough of Teague to give him a shot there, before and even AFTER his ACL injury, which again as I said probably affected him a lot.

    272409

Again, why would you shift a 3 year NFL starter at Center (Teague) to LT and then shift a 3 year starter at LG (DeMulling) to Center and then leave yourself a hole at LG? Instead leave them where they're used to playing and focus on finding a "true" LT. I know it's more difficult to find a LT then a LG and that's why I was hoping against all hope we could of re-signed Jennings this offseason. Yet since we can't I'm calling for us to sign Womack (even though I feel he's a better fit at RT because not sure he's athletic enough to play LT but feel alot comfortable with him there then Teague or a rookie) and draft a LG.

  12. People keep referencing Tillman and Flowers (what a stupid last name) as proof positive that you never draft for need.  Tennessee took the 'best available' athlete last year by drafting TE Ben Troupe, regardless of the fact that they had already drafted 2 other TEs in recent years (Shad Meier, Erron Kinney).  How'd that work for the Titans?  My point is, it's not a 'never draft for need' or a 'never draft best available' scenario.  Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

    272402

Not to mention had the Bills drafted Darren Howard instead of Flowers we would of drafted for need and no one would be complaining. As Donahoe truly said weeks ago the draft is a crapshoot.

  13. First of all, it was Vlinklarek and the rest of those clowns making that determination.  Second of all, they probably felt that given the collection of talent on the team, Teague was the only real candidate for the center position.  But as has been said, if McNally thinks that Teague (or Peters) is a viable candidate at LT, who am I to argue?

    272399

Yeah it was Vinklarek's decision but let's not forget Teague came out of Tennessee as a Center and at this point, at 300 lbs Teague would be considered small for the position of LT. In terms of McNally and the coaches et all I personally feel most of the thought of Teague shifting to LT has been fan and media speculation and nothing more to this point. I read the Buff News from the 10th but again sounds more speculative then reporting to me.
