I mean under McDermott
-
McDermott is calm, steady, reliable. McDermott's scheme is keep the game in front of you, make the other team go all the way down the field bit by bit. Nothing comes cheap. He's betting that the opposing offense will eventually make a mistake, and he's usually right. Even last night, NE made plenty. But so did we, which is uncharacteristic. Without the Coleman fumble and Allen INT, we win. The problem comes playoff time. Not only is the talent and coaching much better, but everyone is hyper focused. Thus, this approach on D is less successful.

This is the same thing people said about Rex's defenses. He needed an all pro LB and S to run it. When it worked it was great, but as soon as those guys were gone it fell apart. Bills have never truly had an elite LB. Milano has been a very good player but nowhere near the level of a guy like Ray Lewis, who was like a DC on the field who also had elite athleticism. That said, few are, which is why Rex is working at ESPN instead of coaching. He didn't forget defense, it's just his schemes are way too complicated for young players to grasp and all world LBers and S are very hard to come by, let alone at the same time on the same D. Imagine Poyer, Hyde and White all in their primes but paired with a top 3 NFL MLB who could teach McDermott his own scheme he knows it so well and has the intensity of a madman on the field.

For all you McDermott haters, who would you want? (Now a poll)

It's almost harder to GET to the Super Bowl than win it. Getting there means a lot of things have to go right. Stay healthy, get a few bounces, avoid the back breaking PI penalty... Once you're there it's one football game and Doug Pederson and Nick Foles can win over Belichick and Brady. If that's a 7 game series NE wins 4-2 or 4-1. That's the beauty of football, though. It's not realistic of course, but imagine if last season the NFL decided "enough Chiefs!" and just put the Browns in the Super Bowl vs the Eagles for variety. I would have given them a 25-30% shot at winning. Myles Garrett causes a fumble, Barkley tweaks a hammy, Eagles miss a FG, Romo goes "ohhhhhhhhhhhh Jim!" and suddenly it's the 4th quarter and it's an Eagles type score of 15-11 and we have drama. But of course, you have to get there to earn that chance. Thus the question is not CAN a McDermott coached team win one, because of course they can. Can they GET THERE is the real question that is TBD. -
Return of the Tre! (Tre White signs with the Bills)
TheFunPolice replied to FireChans's topic in The Stadium Wall
Tre White is going to be the player that intercepts the ball, winning the Super Bowl for the Bills. It'll be tipped by a DL, but he will be the guy who secures the INT, ending the Lions drive and securing the W. -

I think a lot about Dungy in Tampa lately. Gruden comes in and finishes the job, but then it sort of falls apart, because the systems that were built are not sustained. Guys like McDermott could coach here for Allen's entire career and every season will pretty much look the same until playoffs. Then it's anyone's guess, but the results have not been great given what we have at QB and the way Allen has elevated his game in the playoffs. Coaches like McDermott build systems that are rock solid and win consistently in the regular season. But the defense is not very imaginative and just does what it does, which works well enough until it doesn't. -

McDermott is Marty with an all time great QB. Both of their systems work and win a lot of games. For the record I liked Marty too. Either one could have/can win a Super Bowl, but you have to get there first. -
My god, do you hear that? It’s Gabe Davis’ music!
TheFunPolice replied to FireChans's topic in The Stadium Wall
I always thought wrestling commentators shouldn't know the finishes or storylines going in. Just call the match and genuinely be shocked at whatever happens. There have been times here and there where that was the case, but mostly because of last minute changes. As far as Gabe goes: hopefully we get the unstoppable version. -

IMO that is 100% his approach to the game. It's not totally crazy, because you're in the playoffs every year and then anything can happen. Imagine KC drops the 13 seconds pass or a DL gets home or there's a holding call or someone tips the ball. Stuff like that happens all the time in football, so you make them do it all over and over and eventually that will happen. Such is the theory, I think. -

They're solid but not elite, in my opinion anyway. Should be interesting for sure. -

I don't think McDermott is trying to "protect his defense" so much as he has a certain philosophy that, if adhered to strictly, will usually result in a win. There's a lot of bad football being played every week. Anyone who watches games around the league sees that. So the strategy works most of the time. Add in a talent like Allen and it works even more of the time. But against an elite opponent, who doesn't throw the costly int and can stay disciplined enough all game to take the small stuff it often does not work. -

It's the scheme. No matter who comes in the results look almost identical. Especially against a good or great QB. Sit back, nothing big down field, let the other offense eventually make a mistake. The thing is, it works a lot of the time. Unless you play a great QB or well coached team that doesn't make the mistake. -

I'm sorry but Atlanta does not impress me We better win by 10+ That's a team that will play McDermott ball: throw INT or make other costly errors that compound. His defense is built for teams like Atlanta -

On one hand you can't blame him On the other hand he's a defensive HC and his defense cannot stop good teams. -

I just wish we could do Belichicks take the one guy away thing on D Take Diggs away. If whoever else gets 160 yards to beat us,fine but it won't be him. Instead the guy is wide open seemingly every play
