Who cost us the game today?
london_bills replied to fishgrappler's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I just rewatched the highlights of the game. We were in total control of course, the Allen fumble was a big moment in retrospect. They only got 3 off that but we were driving at the time. Allen played really well first half I thought but also well after that. Lots of 3rd downs were converted which is a big thing when looking at a QBs presence. To me Allen played REALLY WELL GENERALLY with certain BAD mistakes in there that can make it seem like it's all bad. The mistakes tended to prove quite critical. The issues with Allen from the game: The fumble. Helped the texans out bigtime. Stepping UP in the pocket at times. The sack on 3rd down at 13-0. Ideally he steps up here and can make a throw to Beasley. Might tempt mcd to go for it on 4th down. He's made these plays before so I know he's capable but it's the consistency. Stepping up is a weakness. Spin move/sacks Spin move he tried twice when he was sacked. I think if he gets rid of that spin move it could serve him well. I don't think the line breaking down is an excuse for him to not get rid of the ball. Lack of decisiveness. He was mostly very decisive, when he wasnt he nearly got picked and he got sacked. We were driving the ball and converting 3rd downs so not getting touchdowns was and is frustrating. -
There's an argument for not changing anything. Bringing in a new backup QB like fitz and better offensive talent, WR, Oline, RB. Draft all offense and a punter. Defence in free agency. See if washington would accept a low draft pick for peterson on a year deal to replace gore. Flipside is someone like shurmer has been a headcoach, could help mcdermott

And then duke williams drops a few balls in the game reminding us why he isn't that good. I wouldnt be suprised if Allen wanted duke in the line up. There are alot of things that happen, conversations that are had that we don't see. The credit for allen statistically improving from year one to year 2 does not just go to Josh Allen. It goes to the OC aswell. Also this is when the head coach steps in and reminds the OC of what he would like to see. If Daboll needs some assistance to not continue making some mistakes this when the CEO steps in. Mcdermott is a defensive coach but understands elements of offence due to playing offences.

I am addressing the 'Allen needs better weapons, Daboll should go narrative.' Allen is here to stay and will be given more weapons next season. Although Allen has missed some things on the field, the concensus is that the talent around him is not great. WR recievers drops, o line mistakes etc. A stud WR and a better o line will put into place for Allen to succeed. This lack of talent has effected Daboll also. Why is dabolls effeciency not going to improve if given another season with better talent?

The first plays against the texans were scripted purely from Daboll and execution was perfect. Although there are issues, I think some caution should be exercised when wanting Daboll gone. Some more plays made by the players and he is looked at it greater esteem, although offensive execution falls on him. I think him gone will answer the question of allen faster though.

Josh Allen - PLAYOFF GAME report card

JOSH ALLEN. 50% franchise QB. 50% CHEVY CHASE. -
Let's see what he does with a top receiver and better o line.

Love Josh Allen. Very exciting. Showed progress statistically, limited the picks. He's here to stay but no - he has not got rid of the hero ball!!! It's was there in the second half yesterday. It was the old Josh Allen.

My thoughts. Capaccio was saying on the radio Fitz isn't happy in Miami. I don't know that he would come back to be a backup.

Maybe a brilliant o line solves everything. -

I think the point here is that Allen needed to be prepared there would be a Blitz coming that might well get through. Although the line was porous, regardless of that there needs to be a QB instinct there above all else. He processed it all too late. We were lucky to get the ball back. -

Was it not the case of allen mostly being aggressive later and constantly looking for the big play. Did this play into his reads -

Exactly what crossed my mind yesterday. The bengals, Lewis and Dalton -

It's been a successful season but it's a bit messy aswell - it's hard to see where the full blame lies and perhaps it doesn't fully lie with one person. That makes it more complex when decisions have to be made in the future. 1. A head coach with a winning record and playoffs who is a great motivator, who is defensive and seems to be a bit fearful on game-day, at least cautious, and is content to hold a lead due to his defensive pedigree. A head coach who has done great with the defence but we let a lead slip that we had built and some 'taking the points' decisions can be looked at in retrospect. Fake a bloody FG! . A coach who looks overwhelmed at times on game-day. 2.A QB who I wouldnt swap for anyone right now in terms of entertainment but looks like mahomes one minute and mark sanchez the next. And looks overwhelmed at times. It certainly is a bit harsh piling on him but something is wrong at times and no way it's always Dabolls fault. 3. An OC who does not seem to integrate what works early on back into the gameplan. Trickery early and then no trickery later. Later, a successful screen pass and then they don't go back to it. He goes away from the run. Tends to not call the game in a way the game is flowing and. Ultimately, we need more TDs of course and this falls on all 3 of them and the personell. An OC who looks overwhelmed at times. End of the half and McDermott and Allen did not seem on the same page with spiking the ball, letting time run off the clock. There's a lack of something at times, composure, fearlessness, execution.. There is what teams do and there is how teams look doing it. The team looks coached and solid one minute, then underprepared and shaky the next. This basic incompetence is what bothers me about the 'growing pains' arguement. Let's say Daboll's in trouble.. adding to this is how many more OC's mcdermott can hire and fire before he's on the block. Unless the pegulas have ultimate faith in him. Maybe the answer is what we are seeing now, adding new players and continuing development. In the future, maybe the answer is mcdermott with a different QB. Maybe the answer is Allen with an offensive minded head coach, or another OC.
