Interesting Player Starting to Slide
hondo in seattle replied to Madd Charlie's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Here's how I interpret the word "slide." The media initially overvalues a guy. As they start to do more homework and realize the player's flaws, they begin to downgrade him. Thus the slide It all starts with the media's mistake of overvaluing a player. -
David Carr Criticizes Winston’s workout
hondo in seattle replied to BuffaloBills1998's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I don't get all the Carr criticism. Just because the guy wasn't a great NFL QB, he doesn't have the right to criticize a current NFL QB? Then I guess that none of us have the right to criticize any NFL QB - including David Carr. -
“One-Hit Wonders” for every NFL Team
hondo in seattle replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Weird to see Terry mentioned because I wrote about him just the other day in the draft bust thread. I can't find this on Google but as I recall Terry had some kind of problem with his eyesight and lost his peripheral vision after his promising rookie effort. He only ran for about 500 yards the rest of his career. -
Ben's a retired neurosurgeon, not an epidemiologist. He's not an expert. But let's say he's right. If you get this highly contagious disease, there's a 1 chance in 50 you die. It's a significant enough possibility that I avoid people outside my own immediate family, wash my hands a lot, carry hand sanitizer with me at all times, and wear a mask when going to public places. Another concern... Under normal circumstance, according to the data collected thus far, an infected person will typically infect 2-3 others. I don't want to inadvertently get someone else sick and potentially kill them. I'm not going to any games.

There are 7 human coronaviruses - 4 of which are responsible for the common cold. There isn't a vaccine or proven treatment for any of them. Coronaviruses are hard nuts to crack. On the other hand, I don't think there's ever been so many labs spending so much money looking to solve a particular communicable disease.

SDS does a great job with this site - a site we enjoy at no cost. Many thanks to SDS for both hosting this site and keeping false - and dangerous - information off it. People who don't take the necessary precautions are more likely to contract Covid 19 - and then pass it along to others. Btw, I don't get my Covid 19 information from tv - I never watch tv news and don't trust reporters to get science/medical information right. I get my information from science websites. The folks I trust include some of the world's leading epidemiologists, including: Dr. Fauci, Dr. Birx, Dr. Lipsitch, Prof. Delfraissy, Prof. Cobey, etc., etc. They agree that Covid 19 is a real global threat to human health.

Until the Covid 19 storm blows over, I'm avoiding all public places as best I can. First of all, I'm 61 and my lungs have been screwed up since the Gulf War (oil fires? chemical agents?). Plus, I don't want to become a carrier who gets other people sick. Like BisonMan, I'm not expecting a vaccine or effective treatment by the 2020 NFL season.

I was deep in the Arabian Desert for the Gulf War when the Bills beat the Raiders 51-3. No ice where I was - nothing much besides sand & sun. I wasn't even able to watch that game on tv. But when I heard the score, I felt really, really good about our Super Bowl chances. Well, we all know how that turned out. The war went as well as a war can go. The big game... I'm glad I didn't get to see that one either.

Chris Johnson Allegedly Involved in Murder Plot
hondo in seattle replied to aristocrat's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Here's the TMZ article. Sounds bad: "Long story short, officials believe CJ2K rewarded a gang member with cash after the guy allegedly killed two men who were suspected of gunning down Johnson's friend in 2015. Here's the backstory ... Johnson nearly died in a shooting in Orlando, Fla., back on March 8, 2015 ... when Orange County Sheriff officials say someone opened fire on a Jeep that Chris was in at around 4 AM. Johnson suffered a bullet wound to his shoulder and made a full recovery ... but the driver of the vehicle, his friend, Dreekius Johnson, did not survive the attack.... Officials also say ... months later, a noted Florida gang member named Dominic Bolden shot and killed two men -- one on Jan. 19, 2016 and one on July 24, 2016 -- who were believed to be the shooters in the March 2015 incident. In the court docs, officials claim an informant told them as a reward for Bolden's alleged actions ... Chris helped the guy become a leader of a famed drug trafficking organization (DTO) in Florida." https://www.tmz.com/2020/04/09/chris-johnson-accused-of-murder-for-hire-nfl-gang-court-documents/ -
You can same about most of the folks making a living in sports media. Their skill isn't sports analysis. They're skilled communicators and self-marketers. If people didn't read, watch and listen, they wouldn't make money. Florio is emphatically not an expert. But once in a while a guy like Florio will stumble across an interesting piece of information because he's talking to folks inside - or around the periphery of - the NFL all the time.

So what is the Pats plan? There is no way Belichick doesn't have one. Brady's departure wasn't unexpected. Needless to say, you don't replace a guy like Brady. There's going to be a drop off. I think Belichick's plan is to win with defense. The Pats had the best D in the league last year. I'm guessing Belichick believes he can manufacture enough points with Stiddy on offense this year to outscore opponents more often than not. What's the alternative? I have a hard time believing Belichick's chief plan is to hope he drafts another superstar signal caller (unlikely given their draft position) or to hope they'll sign a franchise QB in free agency (who? with what money?). Hope is not a plan. I think the evidence suggests that Stiddy is Plan A - at least for now - and, if so, Belichick must see something in him that may not be evident to the rest of us.
-
Folks say Stidham was miscast in the Auburn offense. True or not, he won't be asked to play outside himself with the Pats. Belichick and McDaniels will build the offense around Stiddy's strengths while avoiding his weaknesses. I think he'll be the starter and I think the Pats will put up points. That's a really small sample size and tells us nothing. Word out of Boston is that Stiddy looked solid in practice last year and understands Belichick's concepts.

Buffalo Bills worst draft choices.
hondo in seattle replied to BuffaloBills1998's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I haven't read the whole thread yet so my apologies if someone has already mentioned Terry Miller. Miller finished #2 in Heisman voting to the great Earl Campbell in 1977 and was picked by the Bills #5 in the first round of the 1978 draft. Terry gained 1000 yards his rookie season and it looked like the Bills found a new franchise RB to replace OJ. But Miller only gained about 500 yards during the the rest of his short NFL career. I can't swear this is true but I heard at the time that he developed an eye condition prior to his sophomore season with the Bills that damaged his peripheral vision. -
Why do we need a WR in the draft?
hondo in seattle replied to MrSarcasm's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Reaching for positional need results in bad-value picks. I really hope Beane goes BPA like he says. Given the depth of the receiver class this draft, I'd be fine if the BPA turned out to be a WR. -
Football movie “Greater” must see!
hondo in seattle replied to Frez's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I watched "Greater" and thought it was okay. Not being Christian, the faith-based sports story didn't resonate with me as much as it would have if it was simply a feel-good football tale. "Greater" scores a 7.2 on IMDB which is a solid - but not great - score. A few fans scored it a perfect 10. Naysayers, on the other hand, said things like this: I am a Christian myself, God does not offend me in any way, nor his many followers. But what does offend me is the feeling of being duped into being given a sermon about "Gods will" every couple of minutes. I also feel that had the makers not concentrated so much on "spreading the word", and centered on the story of a sporting underdog done great, it would have been a good film. My Christian wife, like me, also thought the movie was merely 'okay.' I'll add though that I probably would never have learned the story of Brandon Burlsworth, an impressive young man, if not for the movie. -
Diggs vs the WR field in the draft
hondo in seattle replied to John from Riverside's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I don't 'absolutely' believe any particular WR in this draft will be better than Diggs though it wouldn't surprise me if 1 or 2 did end up being better. I just don't know which 1 or 2. Let me ask: If Diggs - as a proven NFL vet - was allowed to enter this draft, where would he be picked? I'd guess he'd be the top WR taken because he's a proven NFL performer. Every time a GM makes a pick, they're relying on a lot of scouting, hope, and prayer. Draftees are great because they play on rookie contracts. Otherwise, a proven guy is better than a guess, hope & prayer - no matter how educated that guess may be. -
It's so hard to accurately predict the Bills first pick. You'd have to guess which 53 players will be off the board by then and then guess who Beane sees at the BPA. Given our lack of urgent needs, I really do believe Beane will go BPA with his first pick. The only positions I think Beane would NOT draft here are QB, P, and PK.

Nonetheless, he's the best QB on the roster. HOF QBs like Kelly are hard to find. We'd rather have Josh under center than some random journeyman. Let's support the guy. Nonetheless, Josh does wear a Bills uni. He's one of us. He's trying his hardest to bring us W's. He fights for the Bills. Let's support the guy.

Pro Football Reference's Approximate Player Value
hondo in seattle replied to Reader's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
5 players actually have negative values. -
Thanks for the well-wishes. While things could have worked out better, they could have easily been worse, too. I count myself lucky. I'm talking to friends about exactly this. The key to business is simple: buy low, sell high. We think there may be some opportunities to buy low coming up. Lenders and investors are little nervous right now but a new normal will emerge eventually. Thanks for the kind thoughts. We actually made an offer on a package of restaurants and the offer was accepted. But the owner was extremely slow in providing his end-of-year financials - impeding the due diligence phase of the buying process - and that pushed back the date of the closing of the deal. It was frustrating at the time but it saved me and my partner from a huge mistake. Not knowing where we'll end up, my wife and I are looking at motor homes and will try the RV lifestyle for a while. I imagine myself parked in our RV near a little creek somewhere in the beautiful Cascade Mountains, doing a little reading & writing, and hiking with my husky. While the circumstances are far from ideal, we're looking for silver linings and finding some.

Long story short... after working in the restaurant industry for 20+ years, I quit my good-paying job and sold my house to chase a dream and buy a couple of restaurants. Fortunately we didn't close the deal before Covid 19 hit. If we had, I'd be bankrupt - my life savings mostly gone - because the restaurant industry is in smoking ruins right now. Nonetheless I am effectively homeless and without an income. And given then sad state of the restaurant business (industry experts expect 100,000+ restaurants to permanently close over the next few weeks) and my advanced age (61), I'm not sure how fast I'll be able to pick myself back up and dust myself off. According to estimates, 3,000,000 other restaurant workers are currently unemployed and I personally know mom-and-pop restaurant owners teetering on insolvency. Sad all the way around. Hopefully the NFL season isn't cancelled and the Bills make a run this year. I sometimes proudly wear a Bills sweatshirt that says, "Just One Before I Die."

You want to force the other team to defend the entire breadth and depth of the field. The more real estate they have to worry about, the less successful they'll be. An offense must present a deep threat to be maximally effective. All this talk about trajectory and level shoulders is good. But to me the problem seemed more mental rather than physical. It seemed to me that Josh was throwing not to be picked instead of throwing to complete a big play. I'm not saying, of course, that Josh consciously threw off target. But I think the fear of being picked subconsciously effected Josh's ball placement.
