  1. I was briefly engaged to a tattoo model about 7 years ago...I can assure you they are all whores
  2. wild movie. Jody Hill's brand of humor just works on me. Have you seen his tv show Eastbound and Down? I actually think it's even better killer soundtrack though. Nice to see McLusky get some of that sweet movie love.
  3. Yeah man, it was going to be a full Big Star reunion (minus Chris Bell, of course). I saw Chilton play twice in like 98 or 99. one gig was one of the more amazing things I've seen and the other was almost offensively boring. Part of his genius was to go out and do whatever he wanted regardless of its ability to translate. I think I can honestly say everyone I know who truly loves Big Star formed a band that tried desperately to sound like Big Star.
  4. This has crushed me the way Joe Strummer's death did. He hadn't really been up to much recently but I always felt better knowing he was out there. One of the all time kings, Box Tops, Big Star, the Flies on Sherbert album, Panther Burns.....what can you say about a musician who touched our lives in so many ways?
  5. girl? naw, that's all woman
  6. producing means got people to fund "The Pacific." Producing means getting talent like Carl Franklin to film "the Pactific." Film doesn't get made without top notch movie star attached to project. You could have done a better job as technical adviser. But people like you and me as producer means "The Pacific" is 10 hours of some dude ranting in a guy's backyard and filmed with a camcorder. Also, nobody sees it.
  7. I think I can counter this with a couple examples from recent film: A couple weeks ago i saw The Hurt Locker. I found it to be an unnerving and tense film that made me deeply uncomfortable. My fiancee is in the Army and is deploying to Afghanistan in June. I felt a certain connection, understanding and respect for her situation by watching the film. However when she saw it all she could focus on was the huge amount of inaccuracies in the uniforms, guns, etc. Is it more important to inspire feeling amongst civvies or to create documentary realism? I have a another perspective on the current war, I'd argue that is infinitely more important than Jeremy Renner wearing a patch on the wrong side of his shirt. Like I said I'm not a military guy at all, but I am a record collector. The film High Fidelity features scenes that borderline enrage me they are so inaccurate (especially in relation to the vastly superior novel). However the film nails the mindset of record collecting for those who are lucky enough to not be trapped with this affliction. No self respecting record nerd would hold a Captain Beefheart LP by only it's upper corner...but the obsessiveness/self loathing/pretentiousness that goes into demanding a Green Day fan respect Stiff Little Fingers? That's exactly what it's like. And ultimately isn't that the point of all this? "the Pacific" is beginning to (from what I understand ep 1 is the weakest of the bunch) create an emotionally realistic account of the war. it's that realism, not gear fetishism, that enlightens the viewer. The end result of this series will be to spark interest in an element of WW2 that rarely gets told (honestly, Nazis are far more cinematic). As long as the basic historical arc is respected manipulation of certain elements for dramatic affect is forgivable. The night battle in last night's episode may not have been 100% accurate, but I found it to be stunning. Flashes from bullets, the occasional glimpse of enemy combatants running along the creek--felt like the Marines were fighting ghosts. Could it have been better/ I don't know, I was never involved in a firefight with Japanese ghosts. Got my heart beating though. People in the know are always alienated when someone tries to film their baby.
  8. I'm finding the Pacific fairly engrossing so far--but then I'm totally indifferent to historical inaccuracies. As long as there isn't a marine on a cell phone I'll be happy. Realism in films comes from not a documentary sense, but the ability for the viewer to accept the onscreen actions as believable. perhaps the guns are wrong, maybe ships sail too close (I'd argue thats an artistic choice--made for television...directors are dealing with smaller screen space, you want to create the panic/awe but have a small canvas) but the ultimate success of the series will be the ability to honestly project scared kids doing something brave. Does it feel like 18 year olds fighting for their lives in a foreign land or is it Rambo destroying Burma with a hunting knife? Last night was only the first hour out of ten...it's like watching 10 minutes of a movie. Hard to know where it's going to go, but so far I am certainly digging it. Also, if William Sadler started yelling at me in real life, I would never stop wetting myself. That guy projects hard ass intensity like nobodies business.
  9. Last season: Trent: 6 TD 7 INT 1,169 yds 73.8 Rating Fitz: 9TD 10 INT 1422 yds 69.7 Rating pretty similar numbers. Difference is Fitz won 5 games to Trent's 1, Fitz doesn't get hurt as easily, Fitz can get out of sacks and actually looks like he enjoys playing the game. plus Trent's inability to run a complicated offense forced a pared down "pop warner" game plan that was ridiculously easy to defend. neither player is a starter on a real football team. However if we are keeping one of these chumps as a back up, wouldn't you choose one that can memorize a plan and actually have the desire to play the game?
  10. I don't get why people are more anxious to keep Trent over Fitz...Fitz is the guy who won the games last year. What did Trent do? Almost beat the Pats? Almost doesn't matter. Trent should be out.
  11. i'm sorry, but that's just stupid. Last season was HORRIBLE, but every other season he's had an 80-112 QB rating. Last season was post surgery...if he doesn't produce this upcoming season he's done, but it's unfair to judge a good career based on a post-surgery year. I'm telling you, if we had the 2002-2009 record carolina had we'd consider Delhomme the second coming of christ. But yeah, jury is out if any gas is left in the tank
  12. what do you like to do? See rock and roll live? eat good food? watch sports? buy records? I can hep you to restaurants, record stores and live music venues mostly. Nice art museum there as well. You haven't lived until you've seen a Jackson Pollack canvas in person.
  13. I think ultimately the pledge is a leftover of cold war paranoia. forget "under god," the whole bloody thing should be swept under the rug
  14. oh, to actually answer your question expect a minimum of 2-3 hours. Depending on how distracted you get.
  15. I always found the best/only good thing about the HOF is the record store gift shop thing that's attached to it. Over priced, but they have some amazing and hard to find stuff/ The near perfect old school Cleveland punk band Thomas Jefferson Slave Apartments had a great song about burning down the HOF for sanitizing rock and roll. A big part of me agrees. Seeing Ted Nugent's loincloth in a plexiglass display isn't exactly the most rock and roll thing out there. Although annoyed by its very existence I have been there like 5 times. Still hard not to be wowed by all that history though. Also, apparently KISS was comprised of four very short men. I learned that at the HOF. They also have some very tasteless displays, like remnants of Buddy Holly and Otis Redding's respective plane crashes. very intense for those who (like me) still hold a grudge against gravity for killing the king of soul. For any rock and roll tourists I'd suggest the Stax Soul Museum in Memphis. Very very cool set up and only $7.
  16. last season was a disaster, but I am not 100% convinced he is washed up. That being said I'm totally cool Buddy didn't chase him. Better QBs on the market, IMO. exciting time to be a Cleveland fan, no? They aren't f-ing around at all this offseason.
  17. It took a lot of effort to not write insults in the margins of papers I've corrected (I'll never forget one that declared women should not be in the military because they will menstruate at the same time--terrorists will be able to sense that and ambush the platoon. Apparently bears are terrorists) But then I taught Freshmen in college, not 6th graders
  18. rumor is NBC will pick up 24 for next season
  19. sure I can, you're the black guy with the spatula
  20. Besides, we can prove you exist
  21. Arnold Layne very forward thinking, odd composition and even odder subject matter. but then I don't really dig the hyper dramatic post Syd stuff
  22. that article is horrifying. I taught film and english comp at oklahoma state U for 3 years--kind of the same market. I was shocked how a very healthy minority of my students were barely literate. In one class only 8 of 22 passed. These super conservatives do not seem to understand the country is doomed if we do not have an honest and difficult education system. Education is not about reinforcing your beliefs, it's about being forced to question/defend what you believe.
  23. First Wave can be pretty cool, unfortunately they overly rely on goofy new romantic new wave. Lot of flock of segulls, ABC, duran duran etc. When it's good it's great. When it's bad it's annoying as hell. If you dig getting a little left of the dial I'd suggest XMU (channel 26?). About 75% awesome indie rock...and 25% terrible indie rock.
  24. Agreed. We live in the future, no longer time to pander to bigots. People feel safe in their bigotry when they are not confronted with that which they fear. You let a couple women dance, realize god doesn't burn the state down, and we all start taking steps forward.
  25. I have to say I find all the post-Syd albums to be boring, overblown and pretentious Syd solo is even more amazing--Madcap Laughs? Forget about it. Amazing.
