  1. aaah..not sure man. this is a very high risk/potentially high reward pick (quinn)..i dunno..to take a guy at 3 who has only really had one great season in college and has been off this entire season is just wayyyyy too risky for me.

considering Fox will probably be out of Carolina this season, you can bet your ass that if Luck comes out, and carolina has the #1 pick, the new coach is going to want his guy at QB. they'd probably take luck at 1 even if fox stays.

nobody on this board have any love for the BEAST in my sig, VON MILLER?

Von Miller, no thanks....I didn't like him the first time when his name was Aaron Maybin

I know it's a risky proposition, given our recent history drafting "one year wonders," but I really think that Quinn will be the best defensive player taken in this draft. He's big (6-5 270), fast (clocked at 4.38 in the 40) and tremendously athletic. Watch some film on the guy, particularly the you tube clip of him vs. Anthony Castonso, and you will notice that he relies on both his strength and speed to rush the passer. He is also very stout holding up blockers against the rush. He could very aptly play OLB in the 3-4, and if they decide to go with the 4-3 next season, he could play DE. Hell, he could probably play DE in the 3-4 if needed. I really think he will develop into a Julius Peppers type defensive player.

  2. everything w/the OP revolves around bashing Fitz, either directly or indirectly. what a joke. why even post here?

Seriously, where the hell is the original poster? You start a controversial thread like this, and you haven't made a single follow-up post to defend your ideas? Let's hear from ya. Tell us exactly why Fitz is the next Jay Fiedler.

We can wait until you are done carving the turkey :D

  3. now that "JOHN(who's that player)GUY",,, is gone.YOU LL see a different approach to free agency ahead.. before each was departmentalized so each had there own fifedom..acting without thought of the the sides work related to theres,,GONE!DONE!Now a cohesive working relationship,,post season scouting has started, look for a popular TE IN FA ,ALSO A DISGRUNTLED DE,,AND A UNDERPAID OLB,,"HERES A HINT .YOU LL BE WATCHING 2 of the three in coming weeks.

draft priorities are ,de,olb,ol,qb....in that order..changes for the better !!!

I concur with that statement....but I have no idea why

I need to start drinking more heavily

  4. Each is a unique player, but I think the people just throwing away the comparison or saying someones dumb for thinking it aren't being all that fair. If you see differences, that's cool, but I get why someone could put the two next to each other as a reference point. Not saying they are clones, but there are definitely similaritieswhen thinking of a qb to use as a comparable at this point Fiedler would come to mind. I didn't see enough of Fiedler to exactly recall his throwing motion, how he goes through his reads, if his stats were poor in the clutch, but great in garbage time. From what I recall he was a good game manager, could scramble, was a smart guy, not elite physically, but could win some games. At this point it's hard to say what fitz will be but those all seem to describe him and there are some very close stats, and they are playing in an offense run by the same man. Fitz could be much better, he could pull a Derek Anderson... Currently he's kind of similar to Fiedler in my head tho, and that's not bad - and I don't think it's nuts to think so far.

Just for the record dude...I did not call you dumb or insult you in any way. It is your perception of the situation, and you are entitled to draw your own conclusion(s). The problem is, as devout Bills fans, we are very familiar with Jay Fiedler. To say that Fitz is the new Jay Fiedler is.....well....kind of an insult. If I knew for certain that Fitz was going to have the same potential as Fiedler, then yes, lets start looking for his replacement immediately. The fact is...we don't know that yet. I'm not saying that he is "the guy," but given his play this season, I'm not willing to rule that out yet.

His play for the remainder of the season, IMO, will be very indicative of his potential moving forward. We have six games left, and three of them are against likely playoff teams.

  5. [

6-2, 225 lbs, slightly better then average scrambler, known for ivy league intelligence. Career 1:1 ratio of td:int. Career completion percentage of 58% with a career passer rating in the mid 70s with a best season in the mid 80s(that season not being a full 16 games). Got first starting job under chan gailey

I don't see why anyone would see a similarity between the two. By the way, which one was I talking about up there? Every statement is true of both.

With regard to your statistical comparison....apples to oranges. Fiedler started 62 games in his career, Fitz has started only 31 entering this weekend. Too small of a sample size for a valid statistical comparison. Their height/weight, and the fact that they both got their first starting job under Gailey make them similar, but it is hardly enough evidence to assert that "Fitz in the new Fiedler." Give me a break.

I have watched both of them play plenty of times, and I'm just not buying it. Completely different players.

  6. Someone please explain to me the Fitz - Fiedler comparison. Besides being fellow Ivy Leaguers, which is hardly a basis for comparison, I see no other similarities. Is it Fitz's arm strength that you perceive to be similar to Fiedler's. Is it his throwing style? Is it his mental capacity for the game? Is it because they are both white men?

Look...I'm growing tired of these Fitz is the new (fill in the blank) threads. I have seen threads comparing him to Chad Pennington, Tyler Thigpen, and now Jay Fiedler (I'm sure there have been more). If you are going to make an assertion like Fitz is just like Jay Fiedler, please at least have some intelligent, specific, points to support your comparison.

For the record, I don't see any similarities between Fitz and Fiedler. :wallbash:

  7. IMO, Quinn does not seem like a Buddy Nix pick at all. He's had one productive year of football and being suspended this year doesn't help his cause. Not to mention that he'd have to convert to OLB in a 3-4.

Also, why are we drafting a 27 year old QB in the 3rd round? This guy will be pushing 30 by the time he's a productive NFL player, then it's time to draft another QB and groom him all over again.

Given Buddy's stated criteria, you're probably right. Quinn just doesn't seem like a Buddy Nix type draft pick. I think it will be so difficult, however, to pass on a player with such a combination of size and athleticism. Think Lamarr Woodley, but bigger, faster, and more athletic. Absolute freak. Scouts think that he could very easily make the transition to 3-4 OLB.

  8. The Thigpen offense Gailey designed for him was gimmicky and based on his ability to run. It was novel and defenses weren't prepared for it. Fitzpatrick averages about 100 passing yards more per game (approximately 245 to 150), because it is a regular NFL offense, based on your QB dropping back, reading defenses and firing downfield to WRs. There is nothing gimmicky about it. Trent couldnt run Gailey's offense and he's probably better than Thigpen and Trent sucks.

Excellent post. I guess Fitz's performance for the remainder of the season will be a great indication of his ability to be a legitimate starting QB. We have six games remaining...3 of which are against likely playoff teams.

  9. 1.Do you think its pure talent or do you think Chan Gaileys offense is a great help?

When I watch Bills games - I see a high powered passing attack... and that makes me think that Trent Edwards was just a hesitant little girl that didn't want to throw the ball downfield.

    2. What do you think? Is Gaileys offense the real deal?

    1. Seems to be a combination of both. A good coach designs his schemes to capitalize on the strengths of his players. It appears that Fitz always possessed the physical tools and mental ability to be a successful NFL quarterback. He just needed a coach who could put him in a situation which would allow him to flourish.

    2. It certainly appears so. With basically the same players at his disposal, Chan's offense has become significantly better than last year's version.

  10. I am looking at this game as a good "measuring stick" for the entire team and coaching staff. The offense has performed well against two very good defenses in Chicago and Baltimore....can they keep it up against what appears to be the best defense in the league? The defense has improved somewhat over the past couple weeks (sans the 1st half last week). They are still getting gashed in the running game, but they are finally getting to the quarterback, and subsequently, are getting some turn overs. The Pittsburgh O-line is depleted to say the least...lets see if the defensive coordinators game plan for this and really go after Big Ben.

Pittsburgh is a really tough team to game plan for offensively. Belicheat and the Pats seemed to do a masterful job of this a couple weeks ago, making the Pittsburgh defense look silly. Although I don't expect similar results, I am interested to see how Chan's offensive game-plan unfolds. Also, will Chan and his crew be able to harness the momentum of two straight wins, and get his players fired up...playing at home? We'll see what happens. At the end of the day, I don't foresee this being a blowout by Pittsburgh.

  11. Some upcoming free agents:

    Zach Miller

    Owen Daniels

    Kevin Boss

    Marcedes Lewis

Obviously, I would love to have either Zach Miller or Mercedes Lewis, but I doubt either player will make it to free agency. The oft-injured Owen Daniels and Kevin Boss would also be tremendous upgrades. Really, it would be nice to get any of these players.

IMO, we really need a legitimate blocking/pass catching tight end opposite Shawn Nelson. This would add another dimension to our offense, as we would be able to run or pass the ball out of 2 tight end, power formations. I have not yet given up on Nelson.

  12. How glaring a weakness is it when you have a WR corps and RB who can catch like we do? How many throws would a TE get in this offense?

If we did have an elite TE I'm sure Chan would work him into the offense. But even the best teams don't have Pro bowlers at every position. Besides we need more blocking from our TE because of the shaky O-line.

As a blocking TE Dave Martin is doing a decent job. We have bigger glaring needs than TE right now.

    PTR

I disagree. We get ZERO offensive production from the tight end position, and saying that Dave Martin is doing a decent job as a blocker is being generous. We certainly do not NEED to have a pro-bowl TE, but a good pass-catching TE would add another dimension to this offense. I know we have more glaring needs to address, but ignoring the TE position all together would be a mistake. Despite all of the weapons at his disposal, I'm certain that Chan could find some touches for him.

  13. It is becoming glaringly obvious that TE is a tremendous weakness for this team. Unfortunately, besides Kyle Rudolph, it doesn't appear that there will be many good prospects available in this draft. Rudolph will likely go anywhere from mid 1st round to early 2nd round, but I highly doubt that the Bills would use their 2nd round pick on a TE. I agree with many on this message board that we need to draft defense, defense, and then more defense in the early rounds. That being said...does anyone know of any potential mid to late round "gems," or perhaps any good TE's that will be available during free agency?

  14. I'm also lovin' me some Donald Jones right now. The guy's a gamer. Contributes on offense, contributes on special teams, and appears to have loads of potential. Entering the season, who would have imagined that our greatest team strength would be wide receiver?? With Easley coming back next season, we are going to have incredible depth at this position.

This brings me to and interesting point, but first, please allow me to preface this comment. I am DEFINITELY not advocating for the team to attempt to trade Lee Evans during the offseason. I am curious, however, what will happen if Chan and Buddy get some inquiries from other teams regarding Evans' availability. I am wondering the same thing about our depth in the secondary, and the potential expendability of Terrence McGee.

    Hmmmmm.....

  15. That was part of my point. So far there has been at least 4-5 threads on drafting already and the season isn't over with. It's driving me crazy to open anoother thread on who we should pick. It's like the season is overwith and everyone is picking now..... That was the point. Sorry if it came out wrong.

Okay...I agree with you to some degree. This whole "who should we draft now" subject seems to be discussed ad nauseam  on this message board. I will say, however, that as the season unfolds, and we gain more insight into our team's strengths and needs, it is interesting (to me) to discuss potential scenarios/strategies for the draft and for free agency.

  16. Let me start by saying that I feel for anyone on the board to start saying who we should draft or not draft is just wasting time now for several reasons.

    1. The biggest reason and one that everyone should keep in mind is the season is not over yet.

    2. At the start of the season, did we ever think we would be down to just CJ Spiller at RB???? Then everyone was saying that last years draft was a good one right???? Well if the season is not over yet, then how can we go without injuries? We do not know who may get hit with an injury yet. Not that it would matter too much, but it does make a difference.

    3. Why are we so high on Fitz? Yes he is proving to be good, and yes he is showing he has what it takes. However, even Chan had him riding the bench to start the season. I'm not saying to get rid of him or anything bad, but if Chan can make Fitz look this good, I can only imagine what it would be like if he had his hands on a Manning or Breez? Yes Chan the Man is why Fitz is looking good, no doubt about it.

    4. What if Fitz shows signs of not cutting it in the snow???? Are we still high on him?

    5. Buffalo has not had a true defensive stud since BBBBBBRRRRRRRUUUUUUUUUUCCCCCCEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I know Schobel was good, but Buffalo truly lacks that GREAT ONE and everyone here can agree with that.

    6. What if Chan and his good ol boy buddy Nix have 2-3 defensive players that they see fit for Buffalo, but they aren't the true #1 pick, and they draft down?

    7. My point is that WE JUST DON'T KNOW.... Lets finish this season first please.................

No offense, but I've read your post 4 times, and I'm still trying to wrap my brain around the point of this thread. I just don't get it. Maybe I need another cup of coffee, or perhaps a full frontal lobotomy  , to decipher this garbled madness.

  17. I don't know about anyone else here, but I love looking at numbers.

Sometimes, they are meaningful, sometimes they aren't... but still, fun to look at.

Here are Fitzpatrick's splits for this season:

    http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/splits?playerId=8664

    -----

    Notes:

    - He performs better on the road, than at home so far.

    - He performs worse in close games, than games that are "blown out"

    - He performs pretty well in the last two minutes of a half

    - He plays better outdoors vs indoors

    - He plays much better vs the AFC than the NFC

    - He plays worse in the second half vs the first half

    - He plays best in the 2nd quarter... followed by 4th, 1st, 3rd (all close/consistent)

    - He starts off slow, performing average for the first 10 attempts, then attempts 11-30 he blows up... but then he peaks and plays poorly after 30 attempts

    - He performs very very well on 1st, 3rd and 4th downs, and very poorly on 2nd downs

    - He's oddly more reliable to get a first down on 3rd and med/long vs 3rd and short

    - He performs well when we are up, or when we are down... but poor when we are tied

    - He plays well from behind

    - He passes best to the side lines, and worst over the middle

    - He is most accurate to the left sideline

    - He is most accurate short, and not very accurate from 21+ yards, but has his highest rating on deep balls (because of rating bias, of course)

    - He performs very well in the enemy's territory, especially in the red zone.

Overall, I really like the way he is playing this year. He has blossomed, and I hope he continues to.

    --------------

Now before anyone throws bricks at me...

Stats DO NOT always tell the full story. For example, there is significantly less data for him playing indoors than outdoors, so that could be inaccurate. Same goes for some of the other stats. Still... fun.

The sample size is too small to draw any conclusions. Interesting though.

  18. This is exactly what happened when we started out 5-1 a few seasons ago - everybody got all excited and started talking about playoffs and Super Bowls (and our wonderful front office extended Jauron) when we had beaten absolutely nobody.

I like winning as much as the next guy, but you're absolutely right - we have to keep thing in perspective and not think we're suddenly some sort of competitor because we have 2 consecutive wins....

This is very different from what happened when we started out 5-1.

We're 2-8...we have improved as a team recently, and have played well against good competition. I think just a little optimism is reasonable and warranted. Further, I have not read one post since about week 2 that has referenced playoffs or super bowl. I don't get where you guys are getting this "delusional optimism" nonsense from. Just be happy (realistically), or go in the basement and berate your cat or something.

  19. Thanks for the insults guys.

I think you're missing my point.

There is a lot of black and white in this forum. A couple weeks ago it was "OMG Fitz sucks!" and this week it's "OMG Fitz is the best!" for example.

How about instead of looking at things as either 1 or 10 on a 10 point schedule, you use some numbers in between? We won yesterday, but you also have to take into account the reasons why we won on the opposite side of the ball.

Personally, I think our overtime loss to Baltimore was more impressive than beating a depleted and mentally defeated Bengals team, for example.

I think we are improving, slowly and surely.

Sorry for the "dark lord" reference my friend. Not necessary.

I am not missing your point...I just think that you're stating the obvious in a overly negative way. The discussion on this board does seem to be polarized, and often contradicting, depending on the team's performance from week to week. Such is the nature of professional sports and it's fans. This phenomenon is not just exclusive to the stadium wall...you can watch Sportcenter and the NFL network from week to week to experience this.

My point is...I don't need you to remind me that that the Bills are still not that good of a football team. I can't speak for everyone on this board, but I fully understand this.

  20. 11/28 PITTSBURGH STEELERS L (though close I think)

    12/05 @ Minnesota Vikings W

    12/12 CLEVELAND BROWNS W

    12/19 @ Miami Dolphins W

12/26 NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS W (this is my "upset" pick)

    01/02 @ New York Jets L

Just my thoughts ... what do you think? Given a 0-8 start a 6-10 season would has to be considered a huge step forward (except for those who want a top 3 draft pick).

    Steelers L

    Vikings L

    Browns W

    Dolphins W

    Pats L

    Jets L

4-12 finish. Pick somewhere in the 4-7 range.

  21. Thanks for "the perspective" oh dark lord....now back to our regularly scheduled programing.

We won a game. Our offense is exciting to watch for the first time in I don't know how many years. Our defense, though it still has miles to go, has improved over the past couple weeks. Chris Kelsay got to the quarterback for god's sake!! Are we so destitute as a fan base that we can not feel good about our team for at least a couple freakin days after a win!!
