  1. There seems to be some confusion. What I said was "Edge Rushers" People who play DE in the 4-3 and OLB in a 3-4. Importantly, all signs indicated that we are CHANGING SYSTEMS!!!!! In the 3-4, typically only one LB is consistently used for edge rushing, which is the Jack LB. Assuming that we use a system very similar to the Ravens (which Pettine coached), we can assume Mario being in a Ray Lewis type usage on the weak side. Meanwhile, we've brought in Manny Lawson, who thrives as being on the Strong Side, which typically is a mixture of coverage and stopping the running back, as opposed to tackling.

This is what the depth chart looks looks like for our front seven at present:

D-line starters: Dareus, K Williams, Branch

    D-line backups: Carrington, Troup,

Rushing LB/DE Hybrid: Mario Williams, Mark Anderson

Outside LB: Lawson, B Scott, Moats

    ILB: Sheppard, Bradham, Dowtin

If anything, where we're weak in the front seven is in the ILB.

I have heard that Moats will be moved back inside in Pettine's defense. He will likely be a depth player behind Shepp and Bradham. Lawson, Williams, and Anderson will be the OLB's in the base defense. With regard to the need for an "edge rusher" being a desparate need, keep in mind that in Pettine's scheme he relies heavily on blitzing safeties and CB's. I don't see and edge rusher being a need as much as a more well-rounded, scheme diverse OLB.

IMO...I put LB behind QB, WR, CB, and TE as needs in this draft.

  2. Buddy has made it pretty clear in interviews that he doesn't plan on drafting a guard at #8, and I think the 3 OT's (Joeckel, Fisher, Johnson) worth drafting in the top 10 will be gone by Arizona's pick at 7. I tend to side with the OP in that I don't see a QB worth drafting in the top 10, and I don't want to see the Bills "reach" for a QB just because we need one so badly.

Obviously, best case scenario would be a trade back into the middle of the 1st round (i.e., St. Louis' # 16), pick up a few additional picks, and then drafting our QB at #16. Given the depth of the WR and CB crop this year, they could address those positions in the 2nd and 3rd round (possibly a TE too). Then, use the rest of the picks to add depth at other positions (i.e., safety, OL, LB).

  3. I used to have a cat that, when his food dish was empty, would jump up on the counter and turn the water on in the sink. Tragically, at 13 years of age and weighing in at a hefty 26 pounds, Oscar needed to be put to sleep due to feline diabetes.

  4. The Bills have targeted 5 primary positions with their pre-draft visits - QB, WR, LB (OLB/ILB), S, TE. Ideally, if you were to pick one of each position in the first 5 rounds, what order would you pick them?

Based on what I perceive to be the value and depth of the various positions, my order would probably look something like this:

    LB

    QB

    WR

    TE

    S

I'll play along, although I don't think their entire draft will focus on the positions represented in pre-draft visits.

    DE/OLB

    WR

    QB

    TE

    S

  5. Reaching for players at high draft spots doesn't improve their talent level. It makes the team mediocre- See Buffalo Bills, last decade and a half......

Agreed, but it seems we are arguing two different points here. You are contending that Buffalo should draft defense heavily because "the strength of this draft is defense." I think that statement has some truth to it, but it also is an overgeneralization. It is pretty clear that the top-tier prospects in this draft are largely OL and DL. Also, there are a few OLB/DE tweeners that should go in the top 10-15 picks (Jordan, Ansah, Jones). That said, I view the 2nd and 3rd rounds of this draft to be deep with QB and WR talent...two areas of desparate need for Buffalo.

As I have stated before, I could see Buffalo drafting an offensive tackle with the #8 pick. On the other hand, I could see them drafting one of the DE/OLB or a defensive back like Milliner (if he falls) or Kenny Vaccaro. Essentially, best player available at #8. It would be dangerous, IMO, for them not to address the WR and QB positions somewhere in rounds 2-4. There are quite a few starting caliber WR's that will likely be available when we pick at #41 (i.e., Hopkins, Hunter, Woods, Williams) and I wouldn't mind at all to wait until round 3 or 4 to address QB.

  6. Exactly. If Marrone hopes to run his k-gun successfully he needs two more proficient WR's, a better TE, help on the O line in G & RT plus a decent QB to groom

Almost the entire draft could all be used on offense in any order

    WR2x

    TE

    G

    RT

    QB

I wouldn't go that far, but I agree that we need to draft offense heavily this time around. That said, the only offensive position that I would even touch at #8 would be OT (i.e., Lane Johnson). I would be fine going with best pass rusher available with #8. I hope they go WR/QB in rounds 2-3, a TE in round 4, and then fill in some other gaps in rounds 5 and 6 (i.e., LB, DB, OG).

IMO....there isn't a QB or WR deservant of the #8 overall pick. A trade back to the middle of round one, picking up some additional draft picks, would be best case scenario.
