  1. Is Sanchez the best player ever on the Jets? He could develop into a starting QB thats worth the money but not till the last years of the deal if ever. So basically they are paying on a possibility it wouldn't be a terrible deal if he got 5 million his first two years, than 7 million in the third year, than he got 10 million in the last two years (with only the first three years being guaranteed)

There really needs to be a slotting system for the Draft. No way is it right that a rookie can step in and be the highest player in a franchise's history.

  2. No video game has simulated actual NFL gameplay in-game better than NFL2k5.

Recent Madden games certainly look better, have more features, etc...but in terms the quality of gameplay, there is no comparison. The sad part is, 5 years later and the animations in 2k5 are still much more fluid and realistic than in Madden(not to mention your animations don't force you to run 7 yards and out of bounds).

Well in Madden 2009 there was gang tackling and the animations were really good. Also in Madden 2009 the game adjusted to your offense but the only problem was it would happen way too late in the game. In NFL 2K5 there was no adjustment made by the opposing team if you had a play that worked you could pretty much run it over and over again. While there are some animations that are in NFL 2K5 that aren't in Madden, Madden 08 and 09 do have the better animations from a technical perspective.

Keep in mind the player models in Madden are of a higher quality so running animations for them are technically harder than PS2 XBOX player models.

  3. I agree that competition was better for the games in general and lots of your criticisms are legit. I don't like certain aspects of the game that you mentioned, most notably that OL/DL ratings seemed to have little to do with skill level. But the 2k5 love is like a good fishing story. It was a good game when it came out. Better than Madden? Debatable. I played both that year and thought were decent. But the further we get away from 2k5, the better and better game it becomes in the minds of 2k5 fans. It was decent. It wasn't great. To listen to 2k5 fans now you'd think the game gave you a BJ at halftime.

Madden has problems that still need to be worked out. I'm not going to deny it It appears they are making a concerted effort to address some of these problems. Take a look for yourself at http://insideblog.easports.com/Default.asp...amp;PageIndex=1 and see what you think. Go ahead and read through the articles and maybe you'll get a feeling for what it takes to put a video game together. But to sit here and pretend that madden hasn't made any advancements and that 2k5 is the ultimate football game is ludicrous.

What exactly is your definition of a better simulation? You mention that madden just added the 0.5 sack. How does that make it a "better simulation?" Stat wise the game is more realistic, but does a 0.5 sack really affect the actual gameplay? As for lead blocker, that's not a gimmick. It allows you to run the ball more effectively by sealing blocks. That's fairly realistic game play if you ask me.

I'll gladly discuss the good and bad of the recent madden iterations. But to sit there and say that 2k5 is still better than current madden ruins credibility.

By no means am I saying that NFL 2K5 is better than Madden 2009 or 2008 (2006 yes and 2007 maybe but thats only because they were building an engine on a new system). Its just that its frustrating to look at a game made in 2004 has features that took three to five years to be in Madden. I like Madden and if it gets good reviews I will likely buy it this year. Its not that half a sack stat is that big of a difference but it shows they don't pay attention to the little things in the game.

When I say better simulation I mean make the game more reflective of actual football. Just take a look at NHL games made by EA those games play like hockey and while they aren't perfect they get closer and closer every year. In NHL I play as the Devils and get better success by using the puck possession dump and chase strategy which they use in real life and in NHL if you score on one timers the computer will adjust and play to stop it.

In Madden if I throw all over the team they adjust way too late (instead of blitzing more or playing a different coverage when its 10-0 they adjust when I am up 21-0). As for the lead blocking allowing you to seal how about the computer be able to do that so I don't have to. Like I said the blocking doesn't have a good balance.

Another thing is the pass coverage is weird depending on the year the pass defenders either stick like glue or get burnt easily. I would like for there to be an middle ground were great corners stick like glue and bad ones get burnt. There are other issues but those are some of the biggest

Like I said each year Madden gets better its just that they never fix some issues and they add in gimmicks rather than doing the little things and fixes that add up over the years. I looked at the things they plan to implement this year and it looks promising but I will have to see if they will actually work in the final product.

  4. I just picked up Lindy's 2009 preview mag. They had the Bills Secondary rated as 5th best in the league. The best in the AFC East.

Breakout Season: Jim Leonhard, NY Jets

    Wide Receivers

    Best #1; Terrell Owens-#4

    Best #2; Lee Evans-#1

Well in 2008 (after he left the Bills) the Football Prospectus called Jim Leonhard one of the worst coverage safeties in the NFL. Than When he played next to Ed Reed and had a team that could pressure the passer like the Ravens he had a breakout season. The Jets have Kerry Rhodes who is a great safety but not quite Ed Reed and the Jets in 2009 won't be able to pressure the QB like the 2008 Ravens did.

So Leonhard will just be an average safety who at best will play slightly above average due to the fact he has a good player next to him and has a defense that can get some pressure on the QB.

  5. Well line protection and pocket creation has been redone this season. Maybe we'll see the effect of a good line this season in the game.

Yeah I hope that makes a difference and I like the fact that they are spreading out the rating system (which another poster pointed out) but it does take them too long to at least address these things. this is going to be there fifth game on the 360 and I feel that they are still behind were they should be. (it only took the NHL series two games to make a great game on the 360 and it only took the NBA 2K two games to make a great basketball game).

I know football is a little more complex from a programing prospective but they put the best teams and the most resources into the Madden game and it shouldn't take them this long to add features into Madden that were in NFL 2k5 a game on the PS2 and X-box. I just hope that they fix a lot of the typical Madden issues in this years game and add in stuff that makes the game better rather than gimmicks that look pretty on the back of the box but don't add anything to the game.

  6. Salaries will NOT go up across the board. With the cap gone, you'll most likely see the top few percent of players getting crazy contracts, while the rest of the players will be getting a lot less. With no minimum cap, theres nothing to prevent a team like cincy from fielding a florida-marlins like team with 50 million in payroll for 53 players.

Think about it. If Danny Snyder decides to spend an extra 100 million in payroll, is he going to give huge contracts to mediocre guys? No. He'll give astronomical deals to the top FAs. Meanwhile, the remainder of the FAs will get much less. Chances are he'll spend that 100 mil by giving 4 guys 25 million more, not by giving 25 guys 4 million more.

Danny Snyder is not the only owner who would spend more to get the players he wants. Other guys like Jerry Jones, Aurthur Blank, Woody Johnson, Robert Kraft, The Mara and Tish families that own the Giants and the new owner of the Dolphins Steve Ross are all going to want to spend money. Once player X gets big money, player Y on the St.Louis Rams is going to hold out to get money. The excuse of the cap goes out the window and it only becomes about the money.

Once the top ten owners throw out big money on good not great players than the good and great players will hold out to get the big money that those players got. It becomes a domino effect it happens in all sports why is the NFL immune from stupid owners? Hockey and Basketball all had uncapped systems in which the owners went nuts and overinflated the salary structure which in turn resulted in holdouts that resulted in a capped system. Even Baseball which has no cap added the luxury tax and more revenue sharing to further balance the league.

Football is able to fall into the same trap that other sports fell into and as a Bills fan that worries me.

  7. Madden stretched out player ratings this season, to make it so every player isn't rated form 80-99. A lot of players league wide are going to be rated "less" that they have in previous years simply because of the stretching out. This season, i believe the average rating is a 70, instead of an 81 or 82 in previous iterations. So a player in the 70s is an "Average" starter, 80s are above average, and 90s are reserved for superstars.

Your criticisms of madden make you sound like a 2k fanboy. No, madden is not perfect and still has issues to work out, but come up with reasonable suggestions as opposed to just "make blocking better."

My criticisms of Madden are pretty legit. If I put out a bad o-line I don't really notice a difference in how well they block. I always build a good o-line but it never seems to matter. As for me being a 2k fanboy I do miss 2k because 2k pushed Madden to be a better game. If I have a great o-line and am going up against a bad d-line I should be able to dominate them all game, but in Madden your o-line can't push around a bad d-line which isn't very realistic.

The reason why Madden 04 and 05 were huge improvements in the franchise is because 2k surpassed them and they stepped up because their sales were reflecting their product (Madden was still number 1 but they were loosing ground and market share fast). Simply put competition is good for the consumer. Basketball and hockey games are awesome because there are two brands competing.

However Since Madden 06 they have been a little sloppy with their product. On the 360 it took them till Madden 2008 to put out an average product (you couldn't do a fantasy draft in Madden 07 on the 360 among other things). Madden 2010 is putting in the half a sack stat a stat that existed in NFL 2k5.

The camera angle presentation they added in Madden 2009 was in NFL 2k5. Madden added the weapons system and the be your own blocker but did those really improve the game? No not really they were just gimmicks. Madden should focus on being a better football simulation rather than adding gimmicks.

  8. Your too kind actually, Brady is back, and both the Dolphins and Jets improved their offense so I expect a setback. 3-13 is a reasonable expectation.

The Jets have a rookie QB and lost their number 1 wide receiver and their o-line and top running back has gotten a year older so the Jets have taken a step back ( on the offensive side of the ball at least ). The Fins have improved but not by a big margin on the offensive side of the ball.

As far as not improving the rush defense my guess is that they hope McCargo will take a step up and help the run defense. I really hoped that the Bills could have added a linebacker in free agency. But who knows there is still some decent linebackers out there (Derrick Brooks?).

  9. Pathetic. You guys are judging the Bills on a freakin video game! Who gives a sh--.

Hey Madden predicts NFL games with a 59% accuracy. And its not like people in this thread are judging the Bills success by Madden its just that a lot of people use the Bills when they play Madden so they want to see how good they will be when they use them.

  10. If there is an uncapped year, which I doubt as I think owners will lock players out if there is no agreement, players have to have 6 years before they become UFA. Expect to see more holdouts as movement will be restricted and teams have control of their players longer.

Well the real reason for players to love it is because it would raise salaries all across the board. For example if player X is a free agent and gets more money than he should because of an uncapped year than when player Y is a free agent a year from now he can ask for more because his stats are better than player X. If salaries go up because of no cap the going rate for future free agents is likely to go up.

If the players didn't want it why did they lobby for the 2010 season to be uncapped in the last CBA? The players want the uncapped year to go through. As for collusion being hard to prove its not as hard as you think because the baseball players proved it back in the 1980's and got something to the tune of 280 million dollars in compensation during the early 1990's.

I am not saying an uncapped year would spell doom for the Bills but it could be a step towards pricing the Bills out of Buffalo.

  11. Doubtful. The owners will want to teach the players a lesson. As much as it will pain Jones, Snyder, and Davis, they'll be forced by the other owners to spend as little as they can.

All it takes is one dumb owner that really wants to win to screw it up. As far as collusion goes I doubt it, if they get found to be colluding that will cost them a ton of money (as seen in the case of baseball collusion). Some owners want to win they often don't see the big picture of the league.

  12. See this is probably with posters liek yourself. i have no problem with you pointing out the bad moves that the Bills have made. God knows they made some terrible ones. But you jsut look for reasons to be miserable and make the Bills look bad.

In this trade for Willis, the Bills got a pick they used to draft a possible franchise QB (Edwards), a pick they used in a package to acquire a pro bowl caliber DT (Stroud), and drafted a running back who in his first 2 years is off to a better start than OJ, Thurman, & Travis Henry??? Why is it so hard to admit the Bills did good? I know you have an agenda but you can't just say your "team" made a good move? :censored:

Of course the Bills have made good moves in the last decade. And trading McGahee was one of the better ones. But you don't miss the playoffs for so long without making more bad ones than good ones. The Bills make good moves which is why they aren't like the Detroit Lions and go 0-16.

To go 7-9 without the ability to spend big on free agents takes good drafting and smart moves. We all think 7-9 sucks but you still need to field a respectable team to win 7 games. And to field a respectable team you need to make some good moves. It just sucks to that we have a sub par coach and can't fill needs with free agents. So the mistakes in drafts and resigning players get magnified.

If the Pats wiff on a number one pick they still have a good team and still can fill other needs with free agents and lower round picks. If the Bills wiff on a pick it hurts the franchise for years thus it looks bad for them even if they make a good decisions two years in a row.

  13. While next year is uncapped as far as the maximum, it is also uncapped as far as the MINIMUM. Teams have a minimum they must spend with the cap. Without a cap a CHEAP owner could elect to spend VERY LITTLE. I have been hearing that the players are leery of this & will want to have a cap with a minimum teams must spend in the new CBA.

Well Owners are more likely to take advantage of lack of a maximum than a minimum (as seen in hockey and baseballs stupid spending when there was no cap or luxury tax in either sport). If there was no minimum than the revenue sharing would likely be changed to as well to reflect that.

  14. This guy seems to have something special. I hope he builds that big long term partnership with Lee Evans....

The last quote of the Mandatory OTA was fantastic to see.

The best catch of the day was a long Gibran Hamdan pass down the right sideline to Steve Johnson. The ball threaded safety Ko Simpson and cornerback Ashton Youboty, and Johnson made a great leaping grab to stay inbounds.

Well I wouldn't take OTA's as a sign of things to come but I will agree that Steve Johnson has some potential and if he can learn from Owens how to be an effective big receiver than he has a chance to be in the fold long term. Its not likely but it is possible. Remember everyone looks good in OTA's even the team that ends up with the first pick in the draft looked good in OTA.

  15. Firstly let me say that the Wood-Levitre/1st team-2nd team reps thing is a total non-issue to me. But I do want to point out that Levitre played tackle at Oregon State so it's a position shift for him also.

Didn't Levitre play some guard in college? But either way this whole who is starting where is a non-issue because both will be starting by the pre-season. If those two can be solid starters and Butler can hold down the right tackle spot than the Bills have a good core to build an offensive line around.

  16. Well I don't think the Ravens are going to give up on a guy who rushed for 1200 yards two years ago (he also averaged 4.1 yards per carry that year) and considering the cap hit and the guarantees that come with cutting that contract the Ravens are at least going to stick with him one more year (at least thats what I think)

The Ravens are still going to run the ball and they will just use McGahee and Ray Rice as a combo backfield and than cut McGahee next season when there is less guaranteed money due to him and no cap. McGahee is a slightly above average running back not worth the picks they gave up (which the Bills used fairly well) and definitely not worth the big money they gave up. But he is still a serviceable player who in a dual running back situation can maximize his skill set.

So while the Ravens may regret that move they still can get good production out of him for one more season and than move on.

  17. Next year will be an uncapped season if the Players Union doesn't come to a new deal with the owners. Now if next year goes uncapped will the players once they get a taste of the uncapped season not want to go back to a capped system? If the next CBA removes a hard cap in place of no cap or a soft cap that is a big problem for the Bills.

If you think the Bills have a hard time competing with the big boys now than what happens once you remove the spending limit on the owners. Under the current system If the Bills drafted well and find a few diamonds in the ruff via free agency than they get good and become a team that can attract free agents. If you take away the cap it makes the Bills less likely to keep their talent let alone get talent.

Another big issue that needs to get resolved by the next CBA is the rookie salary system. If the NFL can do a slotting system were there is some sort of regulation among the first round choices than that makes the draft much more of an equalizer. Right now top five choices aren't that appealing to teams because of the big money you have to give up to get them. If you have a set number for the top picks than you keep rookies from holding out and give more money for teams to keep veteran talent.

Another issue with the next CBA is revenue sharing. Big owners want a slanted system that gives the bigger teams who produce more money have to give up less to the smaller market teams. If that goes through than the Bills get less money and become less fiscally viable

If the owners can keep the current system and cap rookie salaries than the Bills have a great chance of staying in Buffalo but if they go uncapped and share less money than the Bills are in trouble.

  18. Seems like Lynch should be a little higher but this Bills team is going to be fun to use in Madden. Evan and Owens as the top two targets than putting Roscoe or Hardy in the slot. Lynch and Jackson running the ball as well as catching screens are underrated weapons.

I also want to see the ratings on Edwards, Nelson, Wood, Maybin and Levietre. Edwards should be an 83 or an 84 while Wood and Levietre should be around 79 to 82. Maybin should be an 82 or 83 while Nelson should be 75 to 77.

I also don't understand what Mitchell did so badly last year to get lowered by 5 points. I think Mitchell should be slotted at 84 or 85. I also wounder if Poz's rating went up or down? also is Byrd slotted at safety or corner.

I didn't buy Madden last year because I alternate years to which I buy Madden (its not NHL were every year its worth having) but I played last years game and felt it was a decent game. The big problem I have with Madden is that they don't always focus on the little things. They are the only game in town yet they still feel the need to put stupid gimmicks in the game (Like the weapons system or the be your own blocker system heres a clue just make the blocking better and I won't need to do that)

They should focus on making the game reflect football more accurately. How about having a good o-line actually mattering and not taking five years to put in things that were in NFL 2k5

  19. Unless Jack is TIRED of Coaching & looking to get fired, I don't see him trading Henderson. Who would he replace him with?

Well I don't see Henderson leaving the Jags the same thing could have been said and was said about us trading Peters. If the Jags are going to trade him it is because he doesn't want to be there and they want to get any sort of value for him. Its not likely but at least with him having friction with the staff maybe he just says screw this place trade me. Most teams don't want a guy who doesn't want to be there.

Its not a likely way to go but its more of a fans pipe dream in a boring part of the offseason.

  20. Maybe Henderson is available now. I know it might be just wishful thinking but getting Henderson here might give our D that nastiness we have needed for quite some time. If you could package a fourth and that conditional pick we got for Peters I would do the deal.

If we could get Henderson and a OLB ( there are still a few out there ) than I could feel really comfortable with this defense. But of course I don't see this happening at all because I think if Jacksonville was to put him out there some team would offer a third round pick for him and the Bills see next years draft picks as ultra valuable due to there being no cap next season.

  21. Edwards does have the ability to be a really good NFL QB. However he can also go the other way into the average category. Edwards has the mentality and he has the accuracy two things any QB must have. Yet he has two concerns one the arm strength and the injury issue.

The arm strength is a more secondary concern I think he has a good enough arm to be a great QB. Its really the injury concern that gets me worried about Edwards. I like Jaws and trust his evaluation of the QB position but he is not saying anything I don't already know about Trent.

I just hope Edwards doesn't turn into Chad Pennington were he has a breakout year than goes up and down with injuries the rest of the way. Pennington is Edwards but I think Edwards has a little bit better of an arm and if Edwards could just stay healthy i would like to have that kind of QB.

  22. Well I remember when Revis from the Jets was picked apart by the Bills and now he is one of the shutdown corners in the league. Rookie corners take time to adjust. I didn't think McKelvin was bad at all but I did think he was fairly average. He will improve this year and trust me he is a better player than Revis was entering his second year and he will develop into one of the best corners in the league.

  23. That is typically what I try to do. My end-result goal is to have the best team with the lowest cap. Obviously, as my team gets better, I have to trade players ior picks in the final year of their contract because they are going to want bank. I always sign my rookies to 7 year deals. At worst, I have to pay them 2 mil a year in their final year.

Yeah I like to leave myself with 15 million in cap space. I trade players once they hit 30 or 31 they don't have much time left but they still bring in #1 picks. But I usually never get farther than 8 or 9 seasons before I get bored and start a new team.
