Correct me if I am wrong but isn't Grimm's team playing this week? Correct me if I am wrong but aren't the only coaches currently on playoff teams that are allowed to go to interviews are the ones whose team has a bye week? And even if wildcard teams assistants are allowed to go to interviews would they even want to? I mean when going for a head coaching interview you have to prepare for what you are going to say and do.
I think that Grimm simply wants to focus on a game plan seeing as that takes hours upon hours to do instead of overloading himself doing/preparing for and interview and formulating a gameplan for a playoff game. There are no coordinators that are going to turn down an interview with the Bills remember there are only 32 head coaching jobs in the NFL.

Gave up a lot of sacks last year and regressed. Good athlete, questioanble heart. Have been following him since High School days at Piscataway. Late first, early second round pick. Play last season was shaky. A project right now with tendancy to gain weight in off season as he showed up 30 lbs overweight this year to start season. We could do better at 9 elsewhere.
I keep seeing this kid as going into the 10-20 range no where do I see him being outside of the mid late 1st round. I think that the biggest knock on him was his concentration. BUT I think that if we land Bill Cowher we should think seriously about drafting this kid. I didn't hear about him giving up a lot of sacks this season (I could be wrong despite living in New Jersey I don't care about Rutgers Football) in fact most people say that his pass protection is the strength of his game.
I guess my idea of drafting him revolves around the idea of getting Cowher as coach. Davis is a mauler and projects well as a pro LT assuming he can have a pro mindset. BUT I think a coach like Cowher (And the staff he is likely to bring with him) instantly commands respect and can make the most of a player like Davis.

Well, considering that the Colts and Chargers, who are and have been consistently the best offenses in the league, rank 32nd and 31st respectively in rushing offense....I suppose that not being able to stop the run matters all that much. However, not being able to stop the pass, when you look at who is always top 10 in passing = the perennial playoff teams, is much more devastating.....
Look, I know most of us grew up listening to Bill Parcells, John Madden, and all the rest with the tired old "run and stop the run" mantra....
The simple fact is: this is not 1985. Deal with it. Every year the running game becomes less and less important. Use my link and tell me how many top 10 running teams are making the playoffs, and compare that to how many top 10 passing teams are....and thus ends the Bill Parcells argument.
These days, at best, a good running game with a mediocre passing game only gets you to mediocre, just ask the 7-9 Miami Dolphins. Don't like that example? Then ask yourself: Why is it that with Adrian Peterson and that O line, the Vikings have finally gotten good, not mediocre, now that they have been throwing the ball more than they run it?
This is the new reality....time to accept it and realize that we need to continue to be as good as we can be against the PASS, FIRST, before anything else.
True passing is the new wave in the NFL and it looks like its here to stay. HOWEVER just because passing has become the dominant form of offense doesn't mean running the ball is not important or defending the run isn't that necessary. Now I agree you don't need to run the ball that well on offense to be successful BUT you better have a top 10 QB in order to do so.
I think that defending the run is still important in the NFL now can you have an OK run defense and still make the playoffs yes (Colts ranked 24th against the run but it is inflated by the B-team efforts against the Jets and Buffalo and the Saints are ranked 21st but once again a weak ending to their season inflated that a bit). I think that running in the NFL is overrated BUT defending the run is not.
Look at the Steelers in 2005 when they won the Super Bowl with Cowher they were a running team who was primarily built on stopping the run. The Steelers last year were also a team ranked highly in the run. Also the Pats* dynasty* was a team that was always in the top 10 in terms of defending the run. So don't completely discount running the ball and more importantly defending the run.

I think that QB and LT are our biggest issues along the offensive side of the ball. But at pick number 9 we aren't exactly in a position to land either of the top QB's (In my estimation its Clausen and Bradford) without trading up.
Now with Eric Berry, Suh, and Gerald McCoy being the defensive difference makers likely to go in the 8 picks ahead of us and with Bradford and Clausen being the 2 QB's taken and Okung being the LT going ahead of us who is the guy that can help us out at LT.
Well I think Anthony Davis is our guy at pick number 9. He is a 6 foot 5 (Closer to 6 foot 6 then 6 foot 5) 325 pound LT from Rutgers. Davis played guard his 1st year but in his sophomore year moved out to tackle where he has played since (Currently a junior and 20 years old but has declared for the draft). He is a cold weather guy (I think New Jersey and the Big East qualify as cold weather) who fits our need. Right now Davis is a highly regarded prospect (Most have him between 16-10 on their draft boards).
I feel our O-line is a LT away from being a promising unit. With Levitre and Hangartner already there and Wood and Butler set to return from injury all we need is a LT to make the unit a solid one (Resigning Incognito to join Bell and Meridith as backups would be a good idea as well). And with Levitre, Hangartner, and Wood having played 10 games with each other its likely they won't have as big of a chemistry issue as they did entering the season (With Levitre and the Hangman having finished out the season playing with each other).
What is everyone else's thoughts on Davis do you think he should be our guy at pick number 9? Or should QB or defense take priority over the O-line. To me we can help the D in free agency/trades easier then the O-line (good LT's are never available in free agency) and at pick 9 there are likely to be no good QB's available.
-
No one who watched the team can honestly say the Bills D as thin and injured as it was, was the reason Buffalo lost a majority of its games last season. Despite the injuries we got more of a pass rush this season (No thanks to Aaron Maybin) and thanks to the secondary we got more turnovers. In the end our D had issues and was far from Super Bowl quality BUT our offense and special teams is what tanked our season not our D.
Now if you look at our D there were a lot of games that teams put up 30 or more points on 41 (By the Titans), 38 (The 1st Dolphins game), 31 (By Houston) and 31 by the Falcons. There were also 2 games where teams put up more then 24 points on the Bills 27 by the Saints and 25 in the 1st Pats* game. So the Bills in 6 out of 16 games gave up more then 24 points.
Now in only 1 other game did the Bills give up more then 20 points and that was the Tampa game and it was exactly 20 points. So in 10 out of 16 games all the Bills offense had to do to win the game was score more then 20 points and only 5 times this season the Bills offense did that and guess what in those games the Bills were 4-1 (With the only loss being the 1st New England game) AND 1 of those games came against a scrub Colts team.
Also in 2 of the Bills 6 wins this season the Bills D had to hold opponents under 13 points (The 1st Jet game and the KC game). So the Bills D while terrible against the run was still able to provide the teams offense with plenty of opportunities to win games. The Bills also lost a game in which the team held its opponent to under 7 points (The Cleveland game) and games in which they held their opponent to 18 and 19 points (Jacksonville and the 2nd Jet game).
If the Bills had a competent offense (Lets say ranked 19th in the league) and didn't make 1 special team miscue I would say they would have been 8-8 or 9-7 (They win the Cleveland game and the New England game, then they get a win in either the 2nd Jet game or Jacksonville) even if they loose 2 of those games they still go 8-8. So while I think the Bills could use help at OLB and on the D-line lets keep the focus of that number 9 pick on improving the offensive side of the ball.

It's a system employed by many teams in the NFL where the actual player salaries don't exceed the league cap. There are various ways that a player can count against the cap for a different amount then he is paid.
So if the Bills have a player that counts for 1 million against the cap, but is paid 2 million then the Bills count him as a 2 million dollar player. So if the cap was "130 million" then the Bill would spend 128 million after that player's salary is taken into account despite being technically able to spend 129 million.
Ok I get it its the idea of spending in real dollars. So if the cap is 130 million you spend up to 130 million including things that don't count against the cap like signing bonuses. Makes sense from a business perspective I guess but thats the way Ralph runs his teams he runs it in a fiscally responsible manner.
I don't think Ralph is cheap but he has moments where he can be penny smart and dollar stupid. Ralph picks his spots to save money (Coaching hires/resigning players) and not only does it not save him all that much money but that little extra is worth the big improvement to his product.
-
Are the Bills still going to be using their cash-to-cap system? How does this affect their coaching search? What are Russ Smithers and Waylon Overdorf going to do?
What exactly is the cash to cap system? I keep hearing about this system especially during the Peters saga but I was never fully explained to what exactly was.
-
It means Cowher doesn't look so favorably on this cash to cap BS system Ralph has in place. Doubt Ralph (or should I say Littman) backs off on that one.
Can someone explain to me what the cash to cap system is. I remember hearing so much about it during the Peters situation and no one could ever clue me in on it.

I think that there is no way that science is going to find a way to stop the aging process or death. Its a very science fictionish argument to be had about what will society be like if aging was stopped. Don't worry about it because its never going to happen.

Yea, that would be great. Take McClain and trade up to get a lineman. Bulaga, Williams, Cambell etc.
Not bad if we can land a Bruce Campbell, Bulaga, or Anthony Williams type somewhere in the mid 20's. But I don't know if those guys (Especially Anthony Williams or Campbell) will be there at a point where we could trade up to get them. I think that Trent Williams isn't a LT and we should avoid trading up for him seeing as we could just stay at pick 41 and draft a good RT.

KS directing other people's scripts, or even have a better director direct something he wrote, it a huge step for his artistic growth. part of me digs that whole recurring character/town/in jokes thing; but man it is a serious crutch. Sometimes writer/director/producers get stuck in the same kind of circle jerk you find when someone from a band goes solo. Soul Asylum was a pretty good band...early on, but Dave Pirner's solo album is unlistenable--dude needs 3 other guys screaming no at his stupid stupid ideas. Smith movies are like that; he's a guy that could really use the compromise that comes with collaboration.
But then I'm still bitter he cut me out of Dogma.
I think that in the time after Jay and Silent Bob Strike back to Zack and Miri make a porno Smith got stuck in a funk. He dipped his toe into doing something different with Jersey Girl and he failed (Still don't hate Jersey Girl as much as most Smith fans I even fancy it a guilty pleasure movie). Then he went full on back to the mold he created with Clerks 2 (Which I loved but it still wasn't much of a stretch for him BUT I felt that some closure was needed for Smiths fans).
I think Jersey Girl is what scared Smith about doing something different. He tried and failed then he went back to the well because it was what he knew. Then after Clerks 2 Smith went on to do Zack and Miri which while something somewhat different was a very conservative change for him. Now he just directed a movie he didn't write so hopefully it is a success and he feels like his fans will be with him as he gets more artistically driven.
I think Smith is balancing the need to cater to his loyal audience and what he knows makes him somewhat successful and the need to go out and expand his horizons as a filmmaker. As someone who hopes to get into cinema writing I hope one day to have that issue
And I agree I hope Smith one day feels secure enough to have someone else direct a movie he wrote. As his great writing sometimes gets bogged down by his limitations as a director.

one of these guys would you want more? I feel like they might be there when we pick and would be pretty close to can't miss talents
A LT (Not necessarily Bulaga though) no doubt about it. At linebacker we are weak but we have Poz and Mitchel coming back from injury and if we stay 4-3 there are a ton of serviceable free agents that could come in and do a solid job (Derrick Johnson among others). There are rarely any free agent Tackles and LT is a huge need along the O-line. There are a ton of serviceable free agent LB's that will be available.
With Wood and Butler coming back from injury and the Hangman and Levitre already in place we might just be a LT away from having a decent core Offensive line. Hangman is a solid center, Wood and Levitre are good young guards who only stand to get better, Butler looked solid at RT in his brief stint and has shown he can play at a professional level (Butler is by far the weakest of the bunch but we have a pair of young tackles to back him up in Meridith and Bell). Now if you add a blue chip 1st round pick at the most important position of the line to that mix our line could be set for a while.
Linebackers shouldn't be drafted in the top 10 unless they are Patrick Willis types and McClain to me screams like he will be a good player but not the game changer we need at pick number 9. Now I don't know much about Bulaga but if there is a good top 10 LT sitting for us to take then we better take him over a Linebacker. I would approve of taking McClain if the only LT's available are sever reaches.

Does this make any sense??? Pioli hires the hot shot OC of the Cardinals to be the HC and only one year later hires a former Patriot to run the offense. What message does this send to Todd Haley? I guess they were coaches together for the Jets in the past. Maybe Haley signed off on it for that reason. Is this the best Weis can do? Isn't the Bears OC job better especially with a proven QB already on the roster?
Well maybe its just a comfort zone thing having worked under Pioli and with Haley in the past. Yeah I think KC isn't the best spot either considering there are possibly other teams whose offense could use his imprint.

Smith is far from "everything wrong with cinema" but I do think he is using his amateurness as a gimmick/crutch...though his new movie seems like its going to force him to make a "real" film. technically I consider Speilberg to be the "everything wring with cinema" since he is credited with inventing both the summer blockbuster (with "Jaws") and ending the director driven Hollywood new wave of 1967-75.
Then again I am obsessed with B pictures of the 40-60s and the grindhouse style movies of the 70s...so being amateurish and barely competent is less a issue than being bland and soul less.
I think that Smith was a bit afraid to move out of his comfort zone but in the last 2 years I think Smith is trying to grow up and do something more. Zack and Miri make a porn was the baby step he took. Smith didn't use New Jersey as the setting and he didn't use all of his friends in the movie (he did use some). Zack and Miri was also a film that for the first time a Kevin Smith movie that a lot of my friends didn't know Smith wrote/directed but it was still for the most part what he usually does.
Then you look at the movie he just directed A couple of Dicks and its a move that he didn't write a first for Smith. Then you look at the hockey movie and horror movie he plans to do and its bold plans for a guy whose movies are mostly about dick and fart jokes.

Check out Lucero, especially their new one 1372 Overton Park. A little rootsy-ier than Gaslight, but with the same energy, vibe and Springsteen fetish.
Gave them a listen and they are just a little too folksy/country for my tastes but I get the appeal and they do sound like a folk Springsteen.
-
Kevin Smith is a guy who writes brilliantly. Quotable films, they move at a steady pace, exposition is treated seamlessly...all good things. But the guy can't direct to save his life. His films look terrible and he is not good with actors and all. His actors always come off as awkward and stiff. His camera also makes the fourth wall obvious--his films feel like they were made on sets and not in any kind of 360 degree reality. But he is a very nice guy (i was an extra in Dogma--but was cut) and is kind of the anti-Cameron in that you know you are watching a kevin Smith film within about 5 seconds. On day one in film school everyone goes around and says their favorite filmmaker. The top three are always, in order: 1) Tarantino 2) Smith 3) Tim Burton. Always.
Basically i think Smith has a lot of natural talent but not much of an eye. I totally get the appeal, but I really don't share in it. But anyone who gets people really into film is okay with me. Smith is a gateway--he is the pot of directors.
Yeah from a technical perspective Smith isn't a good director (Although he is getting better with age and I can't wait for his hockey movie) but what I love about Smith is his dialog sounds very natural and believable. I love Smith's movies despite their flaws and I think that his style is that he has no style which is why his movies standout.
I am just glad you weren't like some film snobs that think Smith is "everything wrong with cinema"

I am still on SD waiting for a good deal on a HDTV (Will be getting a nice 32 inch HD TV sometime in February or March). I think that 3D is still a bit away I think that they are going to have to find a way to convince people its a little more then a gimmick. Having to wear those stupid glasses just to watch a sports game or play a video game (Video games and sports the 2 things that drove HD) might be a hard sell for quick public adaptation.
I think that as we enter this new decade HD is becoming the standard; since 2006 there has been a huge push towards HD on the television front as more and more shows became broad casted in HD and video game consoles started to enter the HD market. Over the past 4 years HD TV's have gotten cheaper and there is much more available in HD so while 3D would be cool I just don't think the American Public is going to be sold as easily on 3D especially if you need glasses to view it.
But !@#$ what the hell do I know.

Umenyiora is the only player on that list who does anything for me.
Pennington is shot. He's coming off a third shoulder surgery, and this one could be a career-ender. The best he can hope for is a team taking a flyer on him as their backup. Ferguson is a decent player, and maybe he helps serve as a stopgap if you convert from 4-3 to a 3-4, but he has a lot of mileage on that body.
People have written Pennington off before. I think that if there is anyone who knows how to come back from injury its him. I think that Ferguson could have 1 year left and thanks to his age could be had at a nice price. I think if we stay 4-3 Derrick Johnson could be an answer at the OLB position he seems like he could be had at a nice price due to his stock being down due to being a bad fit in the 3-4.
I think Umenyiora is on the outs on the Giants and if Buffalo stays 4-3 he would be a nice guy to try and catch lighting in a bottle with. I feel that the Bills need to go out and take a lot of low risk high reward chances in free agency and trades. All the guys I mention when at their best have been very good players. Do you feel Buffalo should try and snag guys with high ceilings coming off down years either due to injury or wrong system?

But here's the thing: There's an art to writing popular things. You can hate Michael Jackson but the guy had a certain genius for music. And Stephen King has a certain genius for story-telling. And Cameron has a certain genius for movies. With 2 of his movies making 3 billion dollars and growing, some part of his genius should be hard for anyone to deny.
Throw stones at Titanic as a POS not worthy of its 2B revenues but you know what: A shitload of people saw that movie and liked it...even if it's chic to now say it is terrible.
Its one thing if you make something and put it out and it becomes popular because its so good (Wither its a band, a movie, or anything else) its another thing to make something to be popular.
Something gets lost when you make something just to appeal to as many people as possible. Its becomes a business rather then a art. Now this is America there is nothing wrong with making money and I am not here to say making something to be popular is a wrong thing to do but just don't call it art. I think that making music or movies with the soul purpose of being popular is a business practice.
If a Disney executive wanted to go out and find the next Jonas Brothers he wouldn't look for the band that wrote the best lyrics (If they wrote lyrics at all) or was musically the most talented he would go out and find the band with the best look and the most marketable sound. To me at least that isn't art.
Same thing with movies. Were the Transformers movies really art? Or did they just pay someone to take their notes and write a script around it. Cast the hottest chick they could find, get Michael Bay to throw in a bunch of special effects, and begin marketing toys around.
Give me a band like the Gaslight Anthem over anyone you hear on a top 100 hits station.
-
No argument here. But Transformers 2 making a billion dollars does not, in any way, mean that movie was anything less than a big dumb incoherent oddly racist piece of garbage. It's also chic to trash Titanic since now the special effects have worn off we can see it's an overlong series of people walking down hallways. three hours of walking down hallways.
Cameron is smart enough to blanket his shortcomings in revolutionary special effects. It makes seeing his films on the big screen a worthwhile investment....you will see something remarkable at a Cameron film. Although for my money both Cameron and Speilberg made exactly one good film each (Terminator and Duel, respectively). I find their films to be insufferable melodramas with explosions.
Terminator 2 was a great movie and for some reason the special effects don't really seem that dated to me as you said an oddity for a Cameron movie. BUT Terminator 1 was one of the best if not the best action/science fiction movie ever made. While the special effects are very dated the movie is just so intense and filled with action that isn't over the top but gets the message across very effectively and as you said by far Cameron's best movie.
From your posts in this thread you seem to know a lot about movies. I actually dread to ask you your thoughts on Kevin Smith's movies but I will do so anyway.

1st round should be a LT no doubt about it. Anthony Davis out of Rutgers or Bruce Campbell out of Maryland. Okung will be long gone by pick 9. Once we get the O-line in order we can focus on the D. I think our 2nd and 3rd round picks should be spent on the front 7.
Now it all depends on if the Bills get Bill Cowher or another coach that wants to go to a 3-4. If we go to a 3-4 the Bills will likely try and get a DT in round 2 to try and anchor the position. In round 3 and 4 the Bills will likely take either an MLB or OLB (Linebacker depth is so important in a 3-4). Now I would like to see the Bills try and get Terrance Cody But even if they could trade up into the late 1st he would likely be gone so I think that a guy like Dan Williams is a possibility in early round 2 for Buffalo.
-
The real difference isn't the roster. Its the fact that the Skins play in a fairly new stadium, have a stable ownership situation, have an owner willing to spend money on coaches and players, and have world class facilities. The Skins also play in a city that is more attractive to free agents.
Don't get me wrong I love this team and will be visiting the city come next season. BUT with a old stadium, a owner perceived to be cheap, a ownership situation that is up in the air, and a city that isn't highly thought of around the league its not exactly hard to picture why coaches and players don't think much of Buffalo.
Now there are somethings the Bills can fix asap. 1- Ralph try to show you aren't afraid to spend money (I think hiring Bill Cowher or Marty is a way to do that but don't spend stupid like on Derrick Dockery) 2- Ralph show us you have a plan for when you pass wither its your wife or this mysterious Jim Kelly group show the league this team isn't a rental its here to stay.
Once you have an owner willing to spend and a team that is in stable hands the rest of the issues will resolve themselves. Once you build a winner and spend some money free agents will want to come here. Once the team is in stable hands there can be the process of working on building a new stadium or renovating the Ralph.

The best phone verizon offers is the droid. It's a great phone, and many people say its better than the iphone.
How much does it cost (I don't have a plan that gets me upgrades)?

God the man could block. a human D9 cat. Not sexy like a QB or WR but I sure liked watching him.
I am pretty young so I will say Pat Williams played well and hard and was a real rags to riches story real upset he was let go.
Bands worse than Nickelback?
in Off the Wall Archives
Posted
Nickelback is the worst band of the last decade. Creed was the worst band of the 1990's. Now if you want to go even farther back you have to look at Air Supply, Nelson, Dam Yankees, Warrant, the Spin Doctors, and REO Speed Wagon. Also the worst musician ever is Kenny G by far.
