I'd say in order of my choices:
Kaepernick
Ponder/Locker
those are the only 3 that I even consider after the 34th pick. If you can't get one you like in round 1 or 2 and these guys are there in the 3rd you take a shot. After that it's a wasted pick. I'd rather take a stab at LB, CB, OT, TE in that order.
-
Thanks. Glad to see the respect from Weiss
-
I'll take
Bowers
Peterson
Green
Quinn
the only thing I might change would be Peterson with Bowers. I want the best players in the draft at that pick(that we can actually use, that's why no Fairley) I just don't think he fits into the 3/4 at all. And I don't wanna try him at DE. Bowers, Quinn, Peterson and Green could all be the best players at thier positions in this draft. Bowers at 3/4 DE, Quinn at 3/4OLB, and you know the rest.
I hav concerns about Newton like many on this board, but I think it's a boom or bust pick and he could catapult us into relevence again. I'm willing to take a shot on him and his upside. If not I think Bowers is the one for me.
-
I think he's calling out players that can either handle it and show they can reach the next level (possibly Evans) and ones that it's a last hope that he can light a fire under them (Maybin). However, he needs to be careful he doesn't alienate some of his players. I think there is a fine line between calling out the ones he think won't make the cut and ones he can bring back.
To answer your question, the only guys that are in this team that are safe from being called out are:
Johnson
Fitz
Jackson
Nelson
Jones
Wood
Levitre
Moats
Williams
possible consideration for:
Bell
Wilson
everyone else gets a talking to IMO

Falcons President and Competition Committee Chairman Rich McKay revealed on a conference call with the media today that the Competition Committee is proposing a major modification of kickoffs, moving the kickoff back to the 35-yard line instead of the 30, and giving the receiving team the ball at the 25-yard line, instead of the 20, if there’s a touchback.
There is another part if this rule change. They will be banning the wedge on kickoffs completely. It's all about safety now. That's why they are proposing to give them the ball at the 25 instead of the 20. Basically the league is discouraging returns and wants every kickoff to be a touchback. It's just the way this soft NFL is continuing to water down the game. There more rule changes for QBs too. Like you can't hit a QB in the chest area when he is in his throwing motion. So when can you hit a QB now?!?!?!? How bout for a .05 second time frame from when the ball is snapped and in between his 1st and 3rd step drop, and you can only do this with a DE and a blitzing Safety or CB and it must be 65 degrees outside and the score must be 10-7 and only in the month of November, and itlf it's in a Monday night game it's an immediate suspension, and if you are wearing red shoes it's a fine, but that's only if you don't tape your hands. There. The rule change is official.

The Bills better get a Premier QB sometime soon...Maybe it will be with the #3 Pick, maybe not...But one thing I do know...They are going to have to pass on either Gabbert or Newton if they go D at #3 overall...Maybe both...And God forbid if one of those Kids ends up being a Premier QB in the NFL and we are still having this discussion in 2012 or 2013...That would be sickening...

I really like this kid. His college stats are amazing and really hard to argue with. The kid did it for 4 years and did it well. I think Kaepernick and Newton are on Chans radar for sure because what he wants out of his QB. Personally I like both of them because of this reason. Simply put, Chan can give these QBs a chance to flourish under his system. I think both of them would do very well here. Kaepernick may need a little more time than Newt but they should be good QBs at the next level. I'd take Newt in the 1st or a monster like Bowers or Quinn there and take Kaep in the 2nd or 3rd any day and consider that one hell of a draft based on those 2 picks alone. Let's take his Kaeps TE Virgil Green though if we take him. It would be an instant comfort level for him since he's worked with him for years. I'm game for Colin. Bring him in.

This is great news. If we ended up with 3 4th rounders that would be freaking awesome. Maybe trade 2 to get back into the 2nd or 3rd round of a stud is there, or maybe take all 3 picks and pick up ilbs or olbs. Or just maybe we could take 3 tes. Were bound to get at least one right.

A lot of mock drafts by draft experts and a lot of posters here seem to think that the Bills need to pick a QB in the first 2-3 rounds. I don't get this obsession. Didn't Fitz just have a pretty good season in terrible circumstances? The guy had no ground game, inconsistent O-line play (A very bad right side of the line), no tightend to throw to, and a defense that consitantly put him in situations where he had to be one dimensional.
The team has too many holes to waste a pick on a QB especially when there isn't really a franchise QB at pick 3. Newton screams bust and Gabbert to me isn't that much better than Fitz could be.
Why is there this consistent feeling to use top 3 picks on project QB's like Mallet, Ponder, and Locker and a good amount of posters feel that Newton or Gabbert should be the pick at 3?
Are there more people who think that Fitz should be given a chance in 2011?
I agree 100% and disagree a little as well.
The fact is, Fitz did t have that great a year if you look at his numbers. However The 13 games that he played, at the avg he had per game he was looking at close to 4,000 yards and 30tds over 16 games. Even the numbers (as average as they were) he had were better than anything we've had since Jim Kelly (exception 1 season under Bledsoe). Fitz is a pretty good QB and IMO, he could be the franchise guy we've been looking for since Kelly left. He even reminds me a little bit of Kelly (I'm talking about his rough and rugged attitude and fearless play along with his down to earth attitude) he is not looking to be a superstar, but he seems to like it in Buffalo, his teamates seem to like him, and he's silently a good QB. The fact is, the team really rallied around Jin last season and embrassed hi. As thier leader and it seemed it happened almost immediately after Cinco was cut (sounds like it had been a locker room conversation for a while)
the part I disagree with you about is this...
IF the coaching staff doesn't think Fitz is thier guy, OR they want to take thier chance at the opportunity ity to draft pretty much any QB off the board in the draft and make home thier guy I'm all for it.
I disagree with many on the board about Newton since I like jon at the #3 pick. BUT, that is only if the coaching staff thinks this guy could be the next big QB star in this league.
Newton has all the talent in the world, it's gonna depend on his attitude and drive to sucres at the next level.
I out my faith in Buddy and Nix and hope they do what they think is the right thing for the future of this franchise.

Thats Why So Serious - you are a voice of reason. These other guys clearly just
blabor about what they heard on ESPN. If you watched any Locker games, or the Senior Bowl, he was horrible in every outing. The only way you could believe he was a top 10 pick last year if if you never saw him play and just go off of what Todd McShay said and not wha the NFL scouts and his play were telling you. Locker will get drafted 3-4 rounds too high on name alone. He should write a big check to Tan McShay when he does too.
Despite a proclamation by ESPN’s Todd McShay that Locker would/should/could be the first overall pick, a league source tells us that Locker didn’t receive a first-round grade from the Advisory Committee.
The source concedes that Locker might have still be drafted in round one given the value of the position, but the source insists that McShay was flat wrong in his assessment of Locker.
“That’s the problem,” the source opined. “McShay is clueless. Up until three weeks before the 2008 draft, he said that [Kentucky's] Andre Woodson would be a first-round pick. He went in the sixth and is out of the league.”
And the source explained that these opinions come not from the same-old rant by NFL scouts that guys like McShay and Mel Kiper have the luxury of popping off with no accountability as long as it all sounds good (the same-old rant has a significant amount of accuracy, by the way), but from concerns that guys like McShay do kids a disservice by pumping up their expectations.
“The problem I have with people like McShay saying stupid things is parents and others who ‘advise’ these kids think McShay knows what he is talking about,” the source said. “And they believe him before they believe the Advisory Committee. Then, when the kids go a lot lower than projected they are pissed and/or depressed. . . . This stuff happens every year and we have to deal with the broken hearts because people who don’t know what they are talking about put visions of grandeur into young players’ heads.”
Clearly a lot of TBD readers do too.
Schefter was the first one to report that Buffalo liked Spiller if my memory serves me correctly. It was only after his report that Charles Davis and others put Spiller to Buffalo in their mocks.
Thats why I am so worked up about it. The Bills last season telgraphed their pick. I dont believe they are trying to hide anything.
Dude the Bills have been in the top 10 the past 10 years and have ZERO players to show for it. Its awfully hard to miss on the top 10 every year but Buffalo manages to do it.
And if you think they cant mess up a top 5 pick, just wait till April.
Then it's settled. It's clearly obvious that you don't agree with anything the REAL experts have to say or thier opinions and that's perfectly fine with probably most here or anyone for that matter. My question is.... With so much lack of faith and assumptions that the Bills FO will screw up such a high draft pick as they have in the past 10 years... Why are you even following the team and why do you care? It's obvious that you have no faith in them, why don't you just delete your account here an join a Patriots message board?

There seems to be a lot of names floating out there that have plenty of back-up options to the NFL. I'm already at the point where the sport has been damaged and the harder the NFL gets screwed, the better. With the Bills performance over the last decade being so poor, this whole lockout just tipped the scales and pushed me away from the game. The whole thing just reflects so poorly on players AND owners so I'll put my playoff $$ down for the Sabres and enjoy that ride even more.....
Yeah. That's all fine and good if hockey was even 1/10 as engergenic as a football game. Then let's not forget that the sabres are about as mediocre as the Bills are and that thought makes it even worst. Pegula is a savior IMO, but Galisano all we did was let good talent and team chemistry walk because they didn't know how to manage the team. (briere, drury, Campbell, mcgee, etc...) and overpay for sub par talent or keep crap players that can't finish a half a season without getting injured. (connoly, vanek, pominville, miller, Roy) or trade for absolute deadbeats that don't do anything to help the team. (zubrus, bernier, Moore) not to mention sabs season tix are almost 2k for the cheapos and Bills seasons are 400 for the cheapos. I'm done. Many points made. Can't be disputed. Have fun watching the 5th Most popular professional sport.

I don't get it. Are they trying to buy the team?
Best post of the day right thur!

Making the "safe" pick the last 10 years is what got the Bills in this situation.
Roll the dice for a change on being great at #3. You still have #34 fir your "safe" pick.
Perfectly said. We haven't taken a stab at a potential star in a very long time. When we get a top 10-15 pick we always spend it on RBs (dime a dozen players, regardless of talent) this is our shot at possibly taking the next evolution at the QB position. They guy can run like Young but has a great arm. I hate hearing things like "Newton will be a bust" "he's the next Jamarcus Russell" people on this board make me LOL. Unless your really Buddy Nix or Chan Gailey I don't really give a crap what your opinion is. You don't have any inside information, and you are not a prifessional scout that watches these guys for a living.
The fact is:
Newton is a physical beast
Has a cannon for an arm
Has the scramble skills of Vince Young
Won a Heisman Trophy
Won a National Championship
Has proved he is a leader on the field
Has not let all the off the field BS effect his play on the field
COULD be a great QB based on his abilities IF he dedicates himself to his craft (something Young, Russell, or even Vick early in his career never did)
if I hear anymore "This player will surely be a huge bust" posts I'm gonna stab someone with a spoon. Show me your ticket you got for the cmbine as a coach or scout and maybe I'll take your opinion seriously.
You really had a nice post and mock going on and then you had to ruin it by expressing your opino s as they were facts.
The fact is, I don't know if Newton will be the next stud in this league. But considering the FACT that there is no sure thing in the draft and everyone could be a bust, I think it's worth it to take a shot at a franchise quarterback (something this team has needed since Kelly walked away)
That doesn't mean that he is my pick. I personally leave it to the Bills FO and coaching staff to get it right and draft a player that I think they can have and be successful with for the next 5-10 years. If that's Newton or Gabbert, Dareus, Fairley, Bowers, Peterson, Ingram, Green, Or Miller I'm ok with any one of them. As long as it's someone Chan and Buddy think can be a sure starter in this league. With the old HC I was weary that we would get it right. EVER. But in Chan and Buddy I trust we will get it right.

Please guys, Cam Newton will be a bust, do you see the combine, please, bad accuracy and bad attitude, i dont want this guy at all, if i have to go with a QB, i will go with ryan mallet, this guy has a strong arm, has accuracy and maybe is more inteligent than this newton, the same kid that answer too many stupid things in the combine......... And I don´t know nothing about gabbert, because he was a nobody before luck decides to not enter this year´s draft......
The guy looked great in his pro day with his own WRs that he has a history with. Has an extremely strong arm, speed, and other valuables that Mallett doesn't have. No where in the combine did he have a bad attitude either. He made a few comments that were not thought out clearly. He is a young kid. I don't expect him to sound like Drew Brees coming out of school. Only experience can teach someone all the correct things to say and know when to dodge a question. Personally I liked the comment about being an icon and entertainer. This kid not only has the measurables of a potential star, He wants to be larger than most players. That to me says he will be serious about his future. He obviously needs help with many things at this point and if Gailey and Nix think he can be the guy going forward, I trust that they can mentor this kid to be great. Look at what he's done with Fitz (who I think is actually a good QB) with sub talent to Newton. The guy is a winner and a leader. He is a huge risk but so is any other draft pick. If were gonna take a chance we might as well swi g for the fences and hope for a home run to win the game.
-
There's a few changes I personally would made but I'd be very satisfied with this draft. I'd still like Moch in the 3rd or 2nd if we needed to reach a little and Shiloh Tao (I think that's how you spell it) instead of Deccico. I'd also rather have Virgil Green TE instead of Jordan Cameron.
I love the Peterson pick (the guy LOOKS like he COULD be a probowler for years to come) and with recievers getting bigger and faster, along with the NFL tuning I to such a pass happy league I don't see how that would be a bad thing.
Hayward will be a beast IMO
Mathews (if he falls there) will be a huge steal
I think the great thing is there is plenty of talent at DL (DE and DT) as well as OLB that we could pick up in rounds 2-4 that could be potential starters, and play at a high level for us.
With that said, I'd be willing to take the HATED DB or risk the pick on Newton in the 1st round.

If they ever do build a new stadium it will eithe be in NF or downtown. There is no way the city, county, state would allow a stadium to be built in no mans land in Lancaster. Everybody now days know it's all about the dollar and building up the sorroundings. It would most likely be downtown in the waterfront.
Personally, I'm a fan of NF. It's close to the same distance from Buffalo (or most people from the burbs) as OP, closer to Canada, and makes no difference to Rochester.
Let's just hope there isn't a year lockout, so that LA can build a stadium in that time, get the go ahead for a team in negotiations of the CBA and then have Ralph pass. We could be really boned. Just my .02

I watched Moch play on two occasions at Nevada this year and he is the real deal. Combine numbers are one thing, but this guy absolutely dominated on defense. Did anyone see the classic Boise State - Nevada game this year? Moch was unblockable.
I neve saw him play or even heard of him before the combine. His numbers backed by his size is just very impressive. I think this guy could be a huge steal no matter where he is drafted. Obviously I wouldn't take him at 3rd overall or even in the 1st round because that's not where he is projected. It would be a reach. But anywhere in the 2nd round or after I would love it. Moch and Moats as our OLBs for the next 5-8 years would be killer IMO.
-
I think there are probably 40 different players that people on these boards make that comment about.
+1
I think there are too many here that think there is no way some guys fall to the 2nd. The truth is, there are so many good quality players that will fall due to the fact that there are only 32 picks in each round. Some really good players will fall to us in the 2nd. If it's Carimi or Ingram or anyone else I wouldn't be suprised. We just have to hope our FO sees this and drafts one of those BPAs instead of reaching for need IMO.
-
I absolutely love the 1st 4 players in C. Even if Newton is a question mark he is the biggest upside for our need in this draft. I think Ingram will be good to great in his career. I think Spiller could turn out to be a really good player but Ingram could be an every down back and Spiller could be the home run theater for the next 5-8 years. I have stated multiple times in multiple threads how much I LOVE Moch. I think if he goes in the 3rd round he could be one of the biggest steals of the draft. And Mathews blood line alone makes me want him. Not to mention that he fills another need. All in all I think they are a group of 4 starters within 2-3 years that COULD all play at pro bowl levels.
The only thing I would add is a CB with our 2nd 4th rounder. Not sure where Curtis Brown from Texas is slotted but if he fell that far I'd love it.
-
A few more numbers you could look at that you didn't have up here, but the biggest one missing that I really like is Dontay Moch from Nevada. The guy was absolutely rediculous combine wise. IIRC he was almost 6'4", 250lbs, He had a 4.44 40yd, over a 10' broad and a 42" vertical. I don't remember his shuttle or 3 cone but he made my mind up. I want him if we can get him anywhere after the first round is over. I think he could easily play 3-4 OLB, 4-3 DE, or possibly pick up 20-30lbs over the next few years and play 3-4 DE.
Another player to look out for was Acho. Another good day in Indy IMO
if you happen to get intrigued by my insight I'd be happy to see how they ranked with these guys you posted. I'd do it myself but it's not easy to look up or post all that on my iPhone.
-
Just saying he Looks like he could pick up another 20-30lbs on his frame and could play it a little light. Obviously he's not going to play DE in a 3/4 at 250.
And I'm not saying at all to do this. Nor am I saying to make him something he's not. I'd prefer him to play OLB in the 3/4 when were running that defense, DE when we run the 4/3. He looks like he could play many different positions in the front 7 IMO. With his physical talent I'd draft him and find a spot for him somewhere.
-
I agree. Why Moch?
I am not sure on him, either. I can't figure it out.
The guy is a monster. At 250lbs he had a 42" vertical and a 4.45 40 time, with a 1.62 10 yard split. I don't care how you look at it, he's linebacker big with WR combine numbers. I'm still going through and watching the rest of his combine so I don't know about the rest.
It looks like he could play DE in a 3/4, 4/3, and rush OLB in a 3/4. I'd take him any day of the week and twice on Sundays.
-
Mallett is now locked out. Because of size, I am also thinking of locking out
Quan Sturdivant
Bruce Carter
Dontay Moch
Ahmad Black
Comments?
Astro
Why Dontay Moch?
-
Although I like Mallet (especially in RD3) I think I'd rather have Keapernick or Ponder if the option was there. I really like Kaepernick.
I'd really love this if it was possible: (assuming no trades)
Rd 1 Fairley DT/DE
Rd 2 Taylor DT
Rd 3 Kaepernick QB
Rd 4 Moch DE/OLB
Rd 4 Green TE
As you can see I really like some Nevada players. I'm not sure where Moch is expected to get drafted but Moch and Moats sounds like a killer OLB group that I can get behind. And of course Green Kaepernick being familiar with Green already it could be the resurgence of our TE position as a comfort factor for Colin.
What do you think Astro? Where will Green and Moch be drafted? Is this even possible? (speculation obviously)

I would go for a hybrid of taking help for this team to win right now and for the future. With my first round selection... And the 3rd pick in the 2011 NFL draft, the Buffalo Bills take.....
Cam Newton- QB of the future
then with every single pick left I'm taking players to make this team better NOW
2nd- best OT available, Carimi or most likely Sherrod
3rd- Dontay Moch LB Nevada
4th- Brown CB Texas (don't remember his first name)
4th- Casey Mathews LB
5th- Virgil Green TE Nevada
6th- Shiloh Tao SS
7th-Chykie Brown (the other CB from Texas)
