I agree with you completely on the need for elite talent.

Where the debate seems to lie is with what is the best strategy to acquire same?

As I pointed out to @transplantbillsfan above, the "hit rate" from taking one of the top-3 WR in the 1st round, and taking 1 of the top-2 WR in the 2nd round, are practically identical - 8/14 vs 6/10, 57% vs 60%.  And some of those 2nd round players are arguably elite WR talent - AJ Brown, Deebo Samuel, Tee Higgins, Michael Pittman Jr.

If I were guessing which way the frog will jump, my guess is that Beane will trade up slightly and draft a WR in the 1st.

But I don't think it would be closing the door on the potential for elite talent to trade back slightly and get a guy at the top of the 2nd, either.

I agree on that. But I still think Odunze and Nabors will be clearly better than most of this class. I’m not sold on MHJ actually. And of course a lot has to do with where guys get drafted, their situations, their teams, their QBs, their coaches. Someone will do a lot better in Buffalo than they would on Vegas for example imo.

    What a terrible example!

At least use the 2011 Julio Jones trade. That's worse case scenario. Also look at the Mahomes and Jameson Williams trade up.

Good grief at least be a little more realistic with your examples.

I thought a ridiculous trade 25 years ago was also a bit dumb. I get the point. But you made a better one. The Mahomes trade really sticks out to me here. 27th overall, a 3rd, and a first the next year. Not sure if the trade chart has changed that much since 2017 or not but if that’s still the going rate that’s an easy yay for me if Odunze makes it to 10 or in that range. And I get we don’t have a 3rd this year, so maybe 1st this year, 2nd this year, and then you could possibly get away with a 2nd and something else next year. I don’t follow the charts and I’m not about to. So many deals get done on draft day there’s no guarantee everyone follows those charts. And if the pros are right that there are only so many draftable guys in this draft, it would make sense to get one of the best ones. JMO.

For sure!! The memory is a little fuzzy but I think that the company heated the pitches in England. They had never done seats before. They tried to bring the technology to the seats. It worked for a little while but they started to break. Fixing them was costly. Then the company when bankrupt and parts were gone. Disaster

Another way to look at it was a new tech that nobody has really really tried yet. If it worked we wouldn’t be complaining about it. From what I hear from people is they preferred those to what we have now. But I’m guessing that’s all opinion.

    Thanks for your thoughts.

On the one hand, some will say "it's lying season!" and "smokescreen!", and they're not entirely wrong. On the other hand, Beane has shown himself to be very honest and blunt over the years when he does these types of press conferences, and saying that there's nothing meaningful to be gained from listening to what he says ignores the evidence to the contrary that has piled up over the years.

    Regarding a small trade-up, I'll say this:

The random report from Andrew Filiponi a few days ago that the Bills and Steelers swapping 1st round picks was "something to watch out for" raised my eyebrows.

It wouldn't be cost prohibitive for the Bills, it would match the M.O. of a modest round 1 trade-up that we all know Beane seems to love, and if I'm not mistaken, the Steelers need a center, and they could still likely get a JPJ or Graham Barton at 28.

If a Brian Thomas Jr or Cooper DeJean (or whomever they like) is sitting there at 20, it won't shock me one bit if this trade comes to fruition on draft night.

    100% on everything here.

    1. It’s lying game season for sure. Doesn’t mean it’s going to happen but it doesn’t mean it’s not.

    2. I think of certain things happen that aren’t expected you could see them make a trade up. Sure I don’t see them trading up to 7 to get a guy, but if Odunze or Nabors falls out of the top 10 I could see them scrambling for a move. Same goes for Thomas Jr. if he makes it to the late teens I could totally see them making a deal there.

I would love one of the big 3.  Show me how you would make that happen?  Ditka looks increasingly stupid for trading his whole draft for Ricky Williams.  The only way Bills are getting into the top 10 is making a RIcky Williams deal

I think getting one of the top 3 around 9-11 is doable with pick 28, next years 1st (we now have 2x2nds next year and one of them will be fairly early) and likely a little more ammo. Throw one of them in maybe, or some other picks this year.

    or

move up to the middle teens for Thomas who Imo should be looked at as part of that top 4 group.

of that’s not an option, I’d rather get someone like Worthy who may not be overall great but at least he’s got legendary speed to build off of. There’s plenty of options.

regardless, 5th and 6th rd picks aren’t making this team most likely. And honestly, anyone in rd 6 you could just as easily find in the undrafted market after the draft. There’s always a mad dash the minute the draft is over. I’m willing to bet Beane signs about 10+ guys within the first 24 hours after the draft is complete. They will be JAGs and guys that will be there for the “90” that come to camp. But in the end they won’t make the team and it won’t matter.

A numerical argument for trading back and not trading up

    Bills cap space= $2,898,830

That is for 51 players, we would like to have 90 going into camp.

    90-51=49 players still needed

Bills need 2 WR, 1 RB2, PR, Edge, S, DL, C= 8 players needed, who will get high reps this season.

Most every special teams position is needed.

    draft picks 28, 60, 128, 133, 144, 160, 163, 200, 204, 248.

Bills only have 2 picks in the first 127.  We do not have ammo to move up high.

We have too many needs for prominent roles to give away precious draft assets.

Considering our many needs, IMO Beane would be better trading back, and stocking up on top 100 draft picks

Can we actually try and get some elite talent for once? Is it really hard to realize we don’t have very good to great players on this team. We’ve got a team of average to good guys. It’s just not enough to move the needle. We need great guys to beat teams like the Chiefs.

we have Allen. And without him we’d be a 5-6 win team every year. Let’s get some actual players to help him for once.

Um, no it’s not. The seat heaters were a disaster. They hired a company out of Europe that hadn’t done it before. They broke at alarming rates. Over the last 15ish years, the radiant heat has been above the seats. It works well. I sit directly under it.

According to our rep when we went on the tour of the clubs a few years ago they told us that the company that did them went out of business and that’s why they scraped trying to fix them and went with the radiant heaters. I’m not saying what you said was wrong. I’m assuming it’s correct. Just relaying that the company most have been so terrible at what they did that they went out of business.

oh ok, I didn't realize he's testing the market.

Well. I don’t know if he is or not. Of course. I’m just spitballing and throwing some ideas out there as to why we haven’t signed him yet. For all we know he doesn’t want to risk his health at this point.

If they can’t get Brian Thomas I think they trade back and draft Xavier Worthy.

I have said before. I’m all for going with Worthy with the first pick. Westerners at 28 or a trade back. Love his speed. But hoping if they decide that, they double dip fairly early and try and get a bigger bodied WR to go with him. Legette in the 2nd (maybe with a trade up) Polk, Burton, Baker, Rice, Coleman, McMillan, Walker, McCaffrey

Maybe I am scorned from the back to back DE picks resulting in Boogie Bashom, but I just don't like back to back positional picks.

There are only so many footballs to go around.   Burton in the second round would become, best case and most likely scenario, the sixth best option to the get the ball to in our offense.   I can't help but think we could find someone later in the draft for that spot.

You really think that Burton and his talent (off field issues aside) that he wouldn’t be above guys like Hollins or Shorter on this team? The kid has some serious talent. He will be a player in this league not some backup Joe assuming he gets his head on straight.

I watch the draft until the bitter end every year  Does anyone remember about what time the draft ended last year? I know it will vary somewhat

I actually have family coming in from out of town and I don't want to be interrupted until the draft is completely over.

I mean family is nice, but it's the Draft!!

Tell them you watch the draft from start to end in this house. If you don’t like it, find a hotel. Oh, and no talking and don’t eat all my pizza either. Imperial Pizza ain’t cheap

why wouldn't they have just signed him to another year instead of letting him go?

Because maybe he’s debating in if he wants to actually risk coming back or not. Maybe Beane has a number in place what we can afford to pay to Hyde and are allowing Hyde to look on the open market for more and if he doesn’t find it, he’s always available to come back at the rate we’re offering.

Thomas is my guy. I like the other guys too, but he just makes the most sense to me.

Love Thomas. Could easily be one of the top 3 imo. Could I put him there and take one of the others out and I don’t think it makes any difference really. I’d be all for a move up to 10ish for one of the top 3. Around the 15-18 mark for Thomas. After that I’d stay where we’re at and go with one of the following, Worthy, Mitchell, Franklin. If there’s a trade down for extra picks and none of those guys are there I’m all for Polk, Legette, McConkey.

  14. I think IF he continues to play, he’s got a deal in place with Beane that he will be a Bill. Honestly, I hope it’s for a backup role as I worry for his health going forward. He probably shouldn’t be playing anymore. But if he wants to play backup/3S specialist, he hole helping these young kids we have at the position I wouldn’t complain. Hopefully get this guy a ring. He deserves it more than just about anyone on the team.

  15. I’m a Hard no because I would never get rid of Josh. But in actuality it probably makes for a great deal.

could trade the 1 pick likely to many teams for multiple first rd picks. Even some team in the top 10 would give up their 1st, 2nd, and at least next years 1st. It’s possible you could come away with 2 of the top 3 WRs, in rookie deals, with 5th year options. Could still get some of the top positions in the draft at any other positions in rd2. And could walk away with at least 3 first round picks next year.

i admittedly haven’t researched any QBs in this draft to know who’s really good or not. But I can tell you for a fact, that I would not pick Williams. I think he’s a head case and will end up being a problem at the very least because of it. That juice is not worth the squeeze if you ask me. Personally I think he’ll be a bust. So if you had the #1 pick, and he was on the board I would likely trade back for extra picks and look to the top QB next year. Still probably grabbing one in rd 2 this year, with some of those extra picks.

in theory it makes a ton of sense

I’m not sure I believe that account. I’ve had near-50 yard line seats (47 yd line) about 30 rows up Bills side with lots of seniority, and I won’t get the option to attend the Experience until the Fall. Until then they won’t tell me what’s available or how much it will be.

Agree. I think he is "only" a right tackle. His left tackle film is bad. But I think of that list you draft him, sit him and let Spencer walk (or tag and trade if he has an outstanding year) after the season with the idea that he starts in 2025. It's a save cap space for next year pick essentially.

I'd take Jaden Hicks over both of them for the Bills D.

I was also wondering why Hicks wasn’t on the board.
