  1. I'd much rather go 10-6 than 7-9. Anyone who says otherwise should leave Buffalo now. I'd much rather go 8-8 than 7-9 so that people will shut up with the 7-9 already.

I agree with what your saying but if you think Dick is a legitimate 8-8 or 10-6 coach its understandable. IMO if Dick gets past the 8-8 barrier its only due to luck and playing bad teams. That doesnt mean that we would be a good team. Id rather suffer now when I know its going to suck and hope that next year a new coach can start to bring this team back to relevance.

Heres a good question. If you were given the opportunity to make the playoffs this year but you would have to keep Dick through the following 2 seasons of 7-9 would you take it knowing that he is a horrible coach?

Or would you rather go 4-12 this year knowing that you might have the next coach around the corner and ready to take us to the playoffs for years to come.

Of course there is no way to guarantee that a new coach can do that. But I can pretty much guarantee Dick cant considering hes a career .429 coach with only 1 winning season out of 10.

  2. I personally dont believe that Dick will ever (barring a few lucky games) have a winning season in football ever again as a head coach. For this reason I believe that he is the main reason why we have missed the playoffs the last 3 years. 3-4 straight years of injuries is not a coincidence it is a trend with this team and Dick is the constant. He has gone through 3 different OC's, tried out 3 QB's, botched up the RB situation, failed to sign/draft a legitimate WR when we needed one 3 years ago, failed to sign/draft actual players at DE and LB, failed in the scouting department and with the draft, horribly failed at clock/game management.

IMO the only thing he was able to be successful at is providing an above average secondary (you would think after so many DB's anyone could get it right tho), and buying additional time as a HC in the league since he should have been fired 2 years ago.

I for one am glad to lose every single game until Dick is gone. It sucks to swallow that pill now, but it will be much better in the future knowing hes not here to F*&K up this franchise.

  3. So what you're saying is that, despite all of the evidence to the contrary--which I have presented several times in this very thread (on this very page no less)--you're going to stick to that faulty line of logic?

Here it is, one last time, in simple English:

There are plenty of statistics (i.e. offensive rankings), game results (i.e. Superbowl victories), and current performance indicators (i.e. YPC, YPA) that completely disprove the point you continuously try to make, and yet you argue without providing any relevant facts or reason.

Your belligerence in the face of being (quite literally) proven wrong about needing a good offensive line for a QB (or an offense, for that matter) to succeed is astounding. The summation of your points has been:

    - Well other QBs scramble and Trent doesn't

    - Jim Kelly used to talk up his offensive linemen and take them to dinner

    - Owners of the better teams spend all their money on the offensive line

Since I've already debunked the first 2, I'll now rip the third point to shreds:

Let's start with this: who are the "better teams in the league"? How about: Colts, Patriots, Steelers, Giants, and this year the Saints and Vikings. So let's now move to the question of "where do they spend the greatest amount of money"?

Colts - Peyton Manning has a $100M+ contract, and will likely get a new one in the next year or so that pays him $50M in guaranteed money. By contrast, their highest paid offensive lineman is C Jeff Saturday, who makes less than Geoff Hangartner ($3.7M vs. $4M). They start a rookie free agent at left tackle over former 2nd round pick Tony Ugoh.

Patriots - Tom Brady has a $100M+ contract. Their highest paid offensive lineman is LT Matt Light, who signed a 3-year extension worth $18M back in 2007. I know you can do the math, but (just for emphasis) $100M is far greater than $18M.

Steelers - Ben Roethlisberger has a $100M+ contract. Their highest paid offensive lineman is LT Max Starks, who is playing for the Transition tag value of $7.8M. Since their o-line is one of the worst in the NFL in pass protection, and is mediocre at best in run blocking, he's not likely to be retained following this season. Even at that, $100M is still far more than $7.8M.

Giants - Eli Manning just signed a $96M contract. Their highest paid offensive lineman is LT David Diehl (at least until they have to give Chris Snee a new deal--he'll probably get one worth $7M a year I'm guessing), who signed a 6-year, $33M extension following the 2007 season (a season in which--according to Stats, Inc.--he gave up the most sacks in the NFL, and yet the Giants won the Superbowl...weird). Again, $96M is far, far more of an investment than $33M.

Saints - Drew Brees signed a 6-year, $60M deal with New Orleans in 2007. Their highest paid lineman is LT Jammal Brown, who's playing on his rookie deal worth around $14M over 5 years. They probably won't re-sign him when it expires, considering that his backup (Jermon Bushrod) has been starting since week 1 and has played fine in his absence. Even so, $60M is a significantly larger sum than $14M.

Vikings - Brett Favre's deal is worth $12M per year. Steve Hutchinson, the team's highest paid offensive lineman, signed a 7-year, $49M deal following the 2006 season. They also pay Bryant McKinnie about $5M per year. So finally, we've found one that's close. I guess, for your part, 1 out of 6 isn't bad, right?

Ok, I'm tired of beating up on your argument now. So feel free to sell me another line of bull, and when I have time I'll come back and prove that wrong too. Either that, or you can start responding to even one, just one, of the many facts that prove your point wrong. Sound fair?

    +1

Your killing me Bandit and absolutely owning Dog that has no facts that prove his point. I do agree that offensive lines are important but a good QB can prove that an Oline is not needed. It can be the other way around but usually its the running back that benefits from killer Olines, ex. Emmitt Smith's entire career.

  4. To the Ralph Wilson bashers in this thread:

You do realize that without Ralph Wilson, you would be bitching about some team from a different city. Ralph has made mistakes.....what owner hasn't? The team is a mess right now and 91 or not, Ralph is painfully aware of that. Very few people agreed with keeping Jauron after last season and Ralph knows that too. Ralph does things his own way and fans don't always agree with those things when the team is not playing well. Barring a miracle, things will change after the season is over. For better or worse, no one can say.

I've certainly done my fair share of Bills-bashing and reserve the right to continue to do so. But it's time to lay off Ralph.

You mean the same owner that has managed the team to a sub .500 record over 50 years? Or the same owner that runs quality GM's and coaches out of town? The same owner that has threatened the city his team plays in that he will move if tickets arent sold? The same owner that lets his pro bowl talent walk when they become free agents? The same owner that held on to a career losing coach after 3 straight 7-9 seasons? The same owner that has given 8 home games over 5 years to another country?

The truth is the Bills .475 only have better winning %'s than the following teams. Im not quite sure I would count the Texans since they are still very new to the league and barely coming out of their expansion phase.

    Jets .452

    Bengals .4.37

    Texans .375

    Lions .441

    Saints .416

    Falcons .413

    Buccaneers .393

    Cardinals .420

Ralph has held this city hostage with this team and as happy as I am that he has brought them here and kept them here he has consistantly put a bad product on the field. I go to every home game, and will continue to as long as there is a team here in Buffalo, I've gone to NFL drafts, and HOF inductions for this team. I bleed Bills blue and red. But I dont try and sugar coat what Ralph is and has been. Many would argue he even belongs in the HOF along with his beloved coach Marv Levy, who was really just an average coach and above average babysitter with tons of talent. He was obscenely outcoached in SB25 and couldnt keep his players from going out til 6am blowing coke and getting drunk in whatever town they were in at any particular time.

  5. Ive seen some posts that suggest up t 12 players. The truth is you are exactly whats wrong with this team. Too many people thinking too many of our players are good or have real potential. If this front office keeps thinking players like Poz, Mitchell, Whitner, Schobel, McGee, Lynch are good players we will always have a team of underachievers and injured players.

Jackson- Only because you can use him for a few years as starter if needed

Evans- Only as #2, might actually be good with a good WR and true #1 WR on the team

Nelson- Has potential to be a quality TE

Wood- Has potential to be really good

Levitre- Has Potential to be good

Byrd- Tons of potential, might be the next Ed Reed

    McKelvin- Very good

Stroud- Big guy in the middle to build around until he gets too old

  6. Pennington picked up to start the season

Thigpen picked up to compete with Pennington

Young Rookie drafted to learn and win the spot outright by year 2

2nd thought. The Bills will not pick up a QB in the draft (at least not in the first 2 rounds) as they will not pay rediculous prices for an early QB. They will most likely try for someone in FA to complete with Trent and Fitz for the starting job. Draft OL or DL/OLB(depending on how the Tackles progress throught the year) and sure up the front lines of both offense and defense. They would most likely take a QB early in the 2011 Draft when there is a rookie salary cap, and give Trent/Fitz/? one more year to progress with better protection/talent.

  7. Im kinda torn on veteran QB's...the names that could be available/cut after 2009-2010 season are:

    Alex Smith

    David Carr

    Mike Vick

    Mark Brunell

    Mark Bulger

    Jake Delhomme

    Jeff Garcia

    Brady Quinn

    Derek Anderson

    Kerry Collins

    Vince Young

    Sage Rosenfels

    Tavaris Jackson

    Chris Simms

    Chad Pennington

    John Beck

    Billy Volek

    Byron Letwich

    Tyler Thigpen

    Charlie Batch

    AJ Feely

list can go on, but everyone gets the picture...

I wouldn't mind trying out Simms & Volek if they become available, as a back-up role!

Pennington picked up to start the season

Thigpen picked up to compete with Pennington

Young Rookie drafted to learn and win the spot outright by year 2

  8. Houston wouldnt be an old AFL matchup FYI. That would be Tennessee which we are wearing them for that game.

Im not sure what everyone cares for anyway. I dont recall exactly but I dont think our record is too good in those jerseys.

  9. If Jeff Fisher has an problem with the owner of the team it is ALWAYS a bad thing.

If the Titans do the dumb move and fire Fisher at the end of the season Ralph should make him his #1 choice.

You could hire Fisher head coach and GM, say for 7 million a year , with the money you save from dumping T.O.

Just a thought ,you can keep Jauron as Assistant HC , take that title off April and just leave him as Special Teams coach.

you might be on to something here.

    Hire Fischer as HC/GM

Fire or demote Brandon back to Marketing/Assistant GM in training(LOL)

Demote Jauron from HC to Assistant HC/Defensive Coordinator

Fire Fewell or demote him to DB/DL coach

Demote Van Pelt and sign a real OC, or Keep Van Pelt on a short leash

Seriously tho, with the money you would have to spend on Jauron getting fired you could just make him a highly paid DC while promoting and moving others. That way you can keep them all. If they dont like it, they can quit.

  10. Let me save you some time, mrags.

Unless you're simply pandering to crayonz to amuse yourself, take others' advice and let it go.

The poster known as crayonz is hell-bent on getting a rise out of the unsuspecting, logical debator. In this regard, I consider him a diabolical super-genius.

If you already knew that, then my apologies, and have a good time debating. If not, just understand that you can't take him seriously.

Thanks Bandit, I knew that. Im just in an argumentative mode today. But now that you mention it, Im sick of arguing about crap that doesnt matter.

  11. Just a thought, but what about playing Poz/Draft at LB and then leaving Whitner, Byrd, and either B.Scott or G.Wilson on the field. Whitner and B.Scott/G.Wilson could be interchangeable at OLB (at worst they are at least the same size as Ellison), plus it would make the offense have to guess which S will be in the box and which one will drop back into coverage (especially if you drop both Whitner and B.Scott/G.Wilson into the box pre-snap).

Also, Whitner could even play Nickel corner if the other team brings on a 3rd WR.

I obviously am not a D-coordinator but it seems like it could be somewhat advantageous. Just a thought.

That would be too much work for this coaching staff to figure out. They are not the smartest.

And that would mean that the Bills would be an innovator (yes I know the defense has been done just isnt around right now really) and thats just not going to happen.

It is a great idea tho.

  12. I can see how it would seem like a crooked line but it is not.

Step 1 is a clear identification by Fisher that he is done with the Titans. He can't say it directly, but it is obvious as he pretty much states he is in 100% disagreement with the owner.

Step 1 would be enough to end the topic but he proceeds to step 2, which could only relate to what he wants to do AFTER the Titans.

In step 2 he talks about how he wants to pick a QB and stick with him. We have established this is not about the Titans, but who could it be about? What team will probably have a new coach in 2010? There are several. Which of those is in this position because of musical QBs? That narrows the list doesn't it?

    Keep digging and digging.

Even if he was tossing it out there that he wants to coach a team that does not change their QB mid season he could be talking about the following so far this year:

    Browns

    Chiefs

    Raiders

    Eagles

    Redskins

    Lions

    Panthers(most likely soon)

    Bucs

    Rams

    49ers

    Seahawks

    Bills

Most of those teams are injury related when it comes to benching their QB's including the Bills. As far as you, or I, or anyone else around/in the league is concerned, Trent has a concussion and is out due to injury. Nothing more, nothing less. We dont have any idea who is going to start after Trent comes back so your argument means nothing if Trent plays after the bye week.

I would love Fischer, but your stretching big time.

  13. Vince Young will be starting QB for the Titans this week and it seems like for the rest of the season. There was an interview with Jeff Fisher on ESPN this morning. He said it was a group decision but also has been quoted as saying he is in K. Collins camp. Owner Bud Adams wanted Young.

This kind of stuff happens. It seems like a rift developing between Adams and Fisher. Even though Fisher has been a very good coach sometimes things spin out of control and this seems to be one of those times. Fisher is 0-6 and being forced to play a QB when he prefers another.

None of it can be a surprise, but when Fisher came out with his next quote it made it clear he was sending a message to Ralph Wilson. I only saw it on TV but the ESPN.com article had the closest written account:

    Link

That is an obvious broadside at Jauron and Bud Adams meant to get Ralph's attention. It is not fair to Jauron but Fisher is making it known he would bring consistency. I wonder which of our QBs he prefers or maybe he would bring Collins with him.

You apparently ate lots of lead based paint chips as a child

  14. I agree with you. I don't care who is behind center. If Trent were playing well and winning (or even playing like crap and winning), I'd be happy. I don't dislike him because he is not JP. I don't actually dislike him at all, I just don't see what all the Trent fanatics see. I see a bad QB with really no upside. As far as JP, I don't beleive he was great by any means. He had his chances and blew it. I think by the end of his time here, he was completely screwed up in the head. I just think that if he was coached well from the beginning, surrounded by good players and left in there to learn and grow, the think we would have a solid QB in Buffalo right now. I could be completely wrong and clueless, but that is what I believe. But yout point that no other team thinks he is any good is ridiculous. Its been well documented that he had chances to sign in the NFL as a 2nd or third stringer. He decided (whether right or wrong) that starting for Jim Fassel in the UFL was better for his long range career than sitting on the bench in the NFL and collecting a paycheck. Its a risky move and probably not a choice most people would make, but I respect him for it.

GO BILLS. I hope Fitz, Hamdan, Ramsey, Roscoe Parrish or whomever is under center this week throws for a handful of TDS.

Be careful with that one. Next thing you know all the Roscoe lovers will join in and start saying how he should be converted to QB, or we run the wildcat full time so that we can utilize his talents.

  15. I am curious if there are any potential FA Quaterbacks or any that we have the potential to trade for, though that isn't the route I would go.

The Dick is going to screw it up and lead us to probably a 6-10 or more likely 7-9 record and leave us out of the McCoy lottery. Bradford would be available if he comes out which is now unlikely. That leaves probably Snead, Tebow and a host of potential 2-5 round picks to chose a QB from.

Hopefully a new coach will get us out of this dreadful Trentative Checkwards era and start with someone like Tony Pike out of Cincy if he comes out. I could live with Tebow considering he can't be any worse than what we have now.

RB - who cares, it's going to be a committee approach with Jackson and whoever is still here or drafted.

The most recognizable on the list are:

    Chad Pennington

    Kyle Orton

    Jason Campbell

    Tarvaris Jackson

Id take Pennington and draft a young guy to learn for a year or so.

  16. This might sound stupid (and maybe it is), but I wonder if Edwards is thinking about packing it in.

I was thinking something very similar. I dont think there is any way the Bills keep 4 QB's on this roster and dont see them signing someone for just 1 game for this week. Either they have finally seen the light about Trent's abilities and decisions, or maybe Trent has come to the realization that he either cannot play at this level or that hes going to be eating his food from straws if he keeps this up.

Or the other thought is that Trent comes back after the bye week and they have now seen that Fitz is not the backup they expected and look to replace him.

I am going to go out there that the Bills FO now has confirmation that Trent is just afraid to throw the long ball, and makes horrible game decisions and will stick with Fitz for the year, sign a veteran backup/or young guy to learn and maybe compete for the starting job next year all while putting Trent on IR for the remainder of the year.

Call me crazy, I just dont see them bringing in a 4th QB just to sit on the bench.

  17. Glad I could give you a laugh. I just realize the main problem with our offense is the O-line. Did you happen to notice how poorly Lynch is running the ball or because that doesn't fit your argument its not worth mentioning.

Try to come up with some real proof Fitz is better then TE and I'll give some credit were credit is due.

Well, if I thought Lynch was a good running back I would make some kind of comment, but since he couldnt run through a hole a truck left behind im not going to say anything.

Yes, the line does suck. My point isnt that Fitz is better than Trent as much as it is that Trent is either gunshy, or just doesnt know when not to listen to the coaches. Either way, I dont want him as my QB until he fixes those issues.

  18. Seriously, the folks standing up for Trent Edwards just realize he's a better starting QB. The only thing that even suggests otherwise is in the win / loss column. I want to see the Bills win ball games, but the first half of the panthers game was the worse offensive display I have seen yet from the Buffalo Bills this season.

Fitz won the two ball games because of 10 turnovers and anyone that thinks otherwise really needs to get there head examined. I can't speak for everyone , but I am very glad the Bills won the ball games and to suggest differently just because we have a difference of opinion on the QB's is just posting BS.

Where were you for the Browns game?

  19. I would argue that the Bills could easily be 5-1 with the Dolphins game being the only true game where no one showed up.

The Pats game they won but McElvin found a way to lose it with the fumble.

They tried to find a way to lose the Bucs game but thankfully came away with a victory.

The Saints game was 10-7 for 3 quarters and Brees was being harrassed before the suckiness of the offense and special teams mistakes wore out the defense.

The Browns game (c'mon...the freakin' Browns!) was a real dud. Again, total offensive ineptitude could not put more than 3 points on the board against the BROWNS!??!??!? Parrish's fumble did not help.

    Jets. Turnovers.

Panthers. Turnovers and good D and solid special teams.

So far, the biggest things that have killed the Bills are: no offense, bad turnovers at key times, and penalties. I would say injuries, but Fitz, Meredith, Draft, Byrd, Florence, Corner, and Wilson seem to filling in ok.

One could also agrue the exact same points to being 1-5.

    Just Sayin

  20. The reason I didnt talk about Oakland was because of someones direct comments on his time in TB, which is why I kept it to TB.

Look, honestly, I would take Gruden any day over DJ at this point, if for nothing else, the attitude. But having played football I know how bad it is to have your players not trust you. You could be Lombardi himself, but if your players dont trust you then you wont win, and its been well documented that he was fired because his players didnt trust him in TB. That is what concerns me the most.

Gruden did have a good run in Oakland, but for me, his time in TB was poor during the 6 years after the SB. He had just one really good season in 7 years, and that was the year more than 90% of the team was the team he inherited and he won the SB. In six years he had back to back winning seasons once and only made playoffs twice (both times as a team that posed no threat to make a good run in playoffs).

And, its hard, and I mean pretty hard, for a coach to lose the trust of his team, especially one with a SB ring and a mystique like Gruden. To me, that says far more than a SB ring he won given how he won it...

You may be right about the trust issue. Im not going to comment because I wouldnt know. But he didnt exactly have the best scenario in Tampa. Not that he would for sure here either. But he most likely wouldnt be handcuffed to no 1st and 2nd round picks for the first few years. He would have a QB that IMO even he could coach and progress with, and if not theres always FA or the draft.

The fact is that he is miles better than Jauron. I would take Gruden and the worst team in the league over Jauron and these Bills almost any day. Chances are about 50/50 on who would win that game.
