  1. Come now. Nobody got hurt by the last deal, until the situation changed. And now conditions will be MUCH more favorable for a lockout/work stoppage in 2011 than they were back in 2008. :worthy:

Yeah, that's right---the players have the owners "bent over" again on this one, huh? When will those stupid owners ever figure things out?

    hahahahahahaha!

  2. Kind of a mutual thing, IMO - he sat down with Saskatchawan GM and made it clear that his #1 goal was to make an NFL roster.

So, despite the fact that no team in the CFL considered him a starter, he decided he was going to be an NFL starter?

As his GM put it: "It came out of the blue about three weeks ago, and I don't totally know what the circumstances were."

That's like the Mayor of Buffalo waking up one day and resigning because he felt he should be President of the United States.

Well, maybe Harrell will join all of those other prolific NCAA QBs from Leach/Tex Tech in the NFL, such as........

Your comparison to Warner, Moon and Garcia is meaningless:

When Warner didn't make the Packers roster out of college, he went home and signed up with the AFL, where he dominated. He then went to NFLE, where he again dominated. He then got on the roster of the Rams. The rest is history.

Warren Moon through for over 21,000 yards and 144 TDs in Canada before he came to the NFL.

Garcia threw for over 16,400 yds and 111 TDs in Canada before he came to the NFL.

Harrel spent one year riding the pines in Canada and then announced to Canada and the world that he deserved better.

  3. that has plenty to do with the NFL's success, something Mr. Wilson had something to do with.

I don't know anyone who is arguing that, 40-50 years ago, RW wasn't a forceful player in the creation of today's NFL. That's why he is the HOF. But you intially argued that Buffalo's poor economic situation is impacting his ability to clear tens of millions each year. Your response to my pointing out this is incorrect is to argue that the NFL is a very successful business to be in. Well, yeah...good point.

Bills fans had the opportunity to have their say in the 1990s, before the lease was up. as for the Toronto deal, let's not work in a vacuum here. the deal was precipitated after Mr. Wilson expressed serious concern about the franchise's long-term stability in Buffalo. this immediately followed the approval of the new CBA and directly followed his meeting with Governor Pataki, when Mr. Wilson stressed he wasn't looking for any more public handouts.

The lease decision was made by the County Executive. The fans didn't weren't consulted, but no doubt would have approved. Has nothing to do with Toronto 10 years later, however....but anyway, the "serious concern about the long-term stability in Buffalo" was not due to any problems in Ralph's ability to make money at that time. Getting 78 million from a bunch of suckers up north had zero impact on the "long term stability" of the Bills. The next owner will have a world of difficulty paying for his new team that Ralph is completely unfamiliar with, and so far, barring any "secret succession plans", there is no indication that he carees what happens when he is gone. And by the way, Ralph voted against a CBA that promised him and other "small market" teams unprecedented financial aid from "wealthier" owners.

c'mon, really? it's questionable to make any comparisons between how a Buffalo team draws in Toronto as opposed to a based-in-Toronto full-time team would resonate with its fans. the Rogers folks, i believe, over-estimated the value of leasing a team for an eight-game series, and how it would be accepted among Torontonians.

the fact that Torontonians haven't lined up all the way to Queen Street to buy $200 tickets is, i believe, more of an indication that their lack of commitment is more due to the fact that this is a "Buffalo" team. the thought process behind if we bring it they will come was a little skewed.

    no one realized how skewed.

Maybe. Or maybe they got a good look at what a "well established" NFL team looks like.

no. and now you're arguing my point. Mr. Wilson wouldn't give up a piece of his ownership in the first place. and he wouldn't do so if it led to the team's relocation.

if Mr. Wilson went for that deal, then he could be accused of being greedy, right?

No, your point was clearly that the Bills could move to LA tomorrow. You listed it as evidence in your "he could move this team and choses not to" argument. Clearly this impossible tomorrow or in the near future for the reasons I listed. Ralph will not sell to ANYBODY while he is living. No one is arguning otherwise--also a point of mine. It is inconceivable for me to consider Ralph giving up a piece.

right, sounds like an astute businessman. should he apologize for getting in on the ground floor of something that became a national phenomenon? and if the city of Buffalo's serious about building a downtown stadium for the Bills, why does Mr. Wilson continue to say he's not interested?

Of course not! I am making the opposite argument--that he is going to milk it for every penny he can for the rest of his days---right here in Buffalo, becuase there is no other city in the country where he can get the deal he has now. Of course Mr. Wilson will continue to say he's not interested in a new stadium---it would require him to contribute. He has no interest in giving money away when he doesn't have to.

is that what they were saying in Baltimore before the Colts moved to Indy? in Cleveland, perhaps? Houston? or Oakland ... well, not Oakland. or what about the concerns in Jacksonville, Minnesota in San Diego? are those teams secure in those respective markets?

    again, it's a no-win argument you propose.

Mr. Wilson hasn't moved the team and should be faulted for it ... or at least that's the way i read it.

    jw

Ancient history---and not on point here. Each of those teams had an owner who, for financial considerations wanted to move the team and had the opportunity to do so.

My point is that Ralph has neither the desire (he cannot make more profit elsewhere--plain and simple) nor the opportunity (there is, has been no where to go).

Wilson can be defended as a HOFer for several reasons. But he cannot be defended by saying "chose to stay when he could have moved". You have given no argument otherwise, excepting your mention of an off-hand lunchtime conversation that RW had with Schramm so many years ago.

  4. :w00t:

This is a great place for Bills' fans to talk about our team but sadly the extreme level of immaturity that streams from some postings really leaves the question open to whether this is the graffitti wall for some local junior high school kids or if some adults love the thought of being junior high school bullies.

The insults, the obscenities, the racist undertones, and the attacks on other posters make this a place unfit for young fans to visit, which is sad because young fans might want to write about their team too.

And, of course there are the so-called fans who apparently hate the Bills with such gusto that they have to diminish the talents of every player in the lockerroom.

I am not sure what anyone can do about all of this ... and I am sure that there will be attacks on those of us who understand why Tim would abandon this wall.

Would be nice if some intelligence and sense of community existed here but then again it no longer exists anywhere.

GO BILLS ... and come back Tim!

    STF....

    aahhhh, never mind. Too easy.

    Dry your eyes, people.

  5. LINK.

She certainly has not been discredited. Her suit is still in court and she has a good chance of wnning it. I think you said this before, or at least someone with your avatar.

    LINK?

Her suit is not "in court".

She has been discredited---by her own behavior and e-mails after the incident!

    http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/09231/991790-66.stm

    And...

ASSOCIATED PRESS (via THE NEW YORK TIMES):

According to court documents filed late Friday, Angela Antonetti said the woman who made the rape claim “did not appear to be upset, stressed out or nervous” about her time with Roethlisberger, who was at a 2008 celebrity golf tournament at Lake Tahoe.

Antonetti, the accuser’s co-worker at Harrah’s hotel-casino, said the accuser “appeared happy and boastful” and later said she thought she might be pregnant from the encounter. Antonetti made the remarks in a sworn statement attached to a motion to move the case to Minden, Nev., from Reno.

    http://www.weldamfm.com/ben-roethlisberger...anted-his-baby/

There's so much more----you should really look into this before you comment further on that case...

  6. Maybe if you're a scumbag and like rapists. I think he is a top 5 Qb and could never support him on this team. TO is selfish but it is idiotic to put him in the same vein as Big Ben. TO has been a model citizen off the field.

TO was a model citizen in that he was never accused of a crime. Trashing his teammates is another thing. A Douchebag for a different reason....

So not in same vein as BR.

  7. Mr. Wilson considered Tex's offer as being legitimate. I'd have to cull through my notes from last year to see where Schram wanted the team to relocate to. I recall him telling me there was one other offer to relocate the team, but he wouldn't go into detail

And through time, including this past decade, there were and remain larger markets in contention for franchises. And it's generally accepted that Los Angeles has been in play for some time. The Bills most certainly could have moved there several times, including tomorrow, given how the real estate mogul there is talking.

And why not Toronto? Given what the Rogers folks were willing to spend on 8 games, I'm pretty sure they were willing to spend 10 times as much on the team. In fact, one Rogers executive told me they were ready to go after a franchise. Why not the Bills?

If Mr. Wilson was in it for the money, then he'd sell the team before he passses and reap all the benefits rather than putting up with the criticisms and the headaches. Thing is, he doesn't mind the criticisms and the headaches because he truly enjoys being an owner and a football fan. And he also feels a strong tie to Western New York.

Before anyone brings up the fact that he ripped Western New York during his Toronto press conference, well, I don't know exactly what he said that was wrong. He said the economy's struggling in Buffalo and there's very little reason to believe the Bills can generate any more revenue out of the region. ...

Last I checked -- and this was this morning as I drove to work through the West Side -- I don't think much has changed. The city is struggling.

In one way, it's a damned if you do/don't argument you present. If he moves the team, then he's a money grubber with no loyalty to Buffalo. If he doesn't move the team, then he's a money-grubber with no loyalty to Buffalo, because he's ripping everyone off.

    jw

The City of Buffalo and Erie County may be struggling, but, at least financially, the Bills and their Owner are NOT struggling, but doing fabulously.

"he's against moving a franchise without allowing the fanbase a chance to have its say". Really? What did the fans get to say before he sold the games to Toronto? Check your notes.

You really think the Rogers folks would still be looking to buy the Bills or another franchise after the 1st two games they saw?

The Bills could move to LA tomorrow? Is that generally accepted also? There is no stadium. And the guy who claims he is going to build it has stipulated he will do so only if he is allowed to buy significant ownership in any team that wants to move into it. You think Ralph would ever go for a deal like that? Also, any city that Ralph may have moved to lately would likely have asked him to contribute something to the construction of a new stadium. You think Ralph was going to eat that, plus a huge relocation fee---when he has no stadium costs (meager rent) and clears 20-40 million a year in "struggling" Buffalo??

As I said, these "he could have moved/sold" arguments are weak.

  8. and Mr. WEO: to follow up on the relocation front, Tex Schram offered and urged Mr. Wilson the opportunity to relocate the Bills in the late 70s/early 80s. as explained to me, Mr. Wilson's philosophy -- and why he's voted against relocation at every opportunity -- is he's against moving a franchise without allowing the fanbase a chance to have its say. he's against movement for movement's sake.

Urged him to move where, exactly? Dallas, perhaps?

This is what I could found re: that:

"Twenty-five years ago, Tex Schramm said, 'Why don't you move out of that Buffalo and I'll come up and help you pack." USA Today

"Wilson had opportunities to move. Before the stadium in Orchard Park was built in '73, Schramm told Wilson he would come to Buffalo to help pack the moving boxes." Buff News

Basically Schramm telling him he should move out of Buffalo. Over 30 years ago.

Look, it's obvious that it has been to everyone's benefit that the Bills stayed put. But it remains that there has been no financial benefit to moving for at least 20 years, nor has there been any serious pitch for Ralph to do so, Mr. Schramm's "offer" aside.

  9. Mel gave us a c+. After looking over his draft guide I notcied that between our draft and free agent signings he gave 16 of our guys a 6th round or better grade. I would say that Buddy grabbed a bunch of useful players .

There are only 7 rounds in the draft....

  10. I hope Tim reconsiders. His exit seemed a bit rash.

It is funny to observe the crocodile weeping by so many over his TSW demise when a large number of posters here would bash the guy (his TO stuff, his pats stuff, etc.) whenever he didn't toe the TSW line.

Come on back Tim--yours was the only thoughtful media input we had here.

  11. I think Nix and Co. believe we are set at Center with Hangartner and the young guys brought in. As for Mawae, I wouldn't mind him coming in, but he's 40 and nothing more than a stop gap for a season or two. From the looks of things, Nix has no interest in patchworking a line, but building from scratch.

Hangartner right now is better than Mawae right now? Didn't look that way to me.

Why can't one of the best in the league come in for a year and teach Wood how to play? We don't have one decent, experienced O-lineman who can tutor this shaky group. Why should it be this way?

    Dump Hangartner.

  12. Switzer took over a SB-winning team. Gailey did not. Slight difference there, chief.

I'd have to look it up. But take a guess who the QB for that 6-10 (1997) season was? Your point, again?

    Apparently he did.

    http://www.nfl.com/news/story?id=09000d5d8...mp;confirm=true

Switzer had one losing season with the Cowboys. CG had one winning season with the Cowboys.

The QBs that followed Aikman's demise: Carter, Anthony Wright, Ryan Leaf (!) and Steve Hutchinson.

Why didn't we just keep Jauron?----he has taken a team to the playoffs (more recently and with a less talented team than even the fading 90's Cowboys) and was 7-9 with the Bills, as opposed to 8-8 with a better Cowboys team (CG).

  13. This thread is funny. Gailey takes a team that went 6-10 before he got there, leads it to 2 playoff appearances, gets fired in what Jerry Jones calls "a mistake on his part," and the Cowboys go 5-11 for 3 straight years afterwards, and all some are talking about is his record at GT?

By this logic, why not hire Switzer? Only had one bad season in Dallas. Won a bunch of playoff games. Even a SB. AND he was actually a successful college coach.

Who were the QBs for those 3 5-11 seasons?

In the more than 10 years between Jones firing CG and the Bills hiring, did Jones tell anybody that he regretted firing GAiley?

  14. Never having watched Green play and going off of that link above, if you remove penalties, Green was decent in pass and run blocking (according to their rating system, he was positive in both). Where he got killed was penalties. But as has been mentioned, the Raiders' offense can make anyone look bad and their lack of discipline doesn't help matters. I saw this article posted on another website, and it talked about Gailey during his time with the Cowboys:

    http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/art...644/1/index.htm

    Specifically this part:

If Gailey can get Green to cut down on the false starts (he had 7 in 2009), it will help immensely.

So all you have to do is TELL the guys not to commit penalties (emphatically)?

It's so simple---yet it makes so much sense!

Hope this secret method doesn't get figured out by other HC's in the league...

  15. You are an angry man. Take it easy.

This "story" is in its infancy right now. And it sounds absurd to me. That's my opinion. Payton has already flatly denied the allegations. And the allegations are unfounded so far. Geez.

Not saying he is making this up for sure, but anybody who threatens to blackmail their former employer is sick. Trying to extort money and then "going public" with it because they won't agree to you excessive monetary demands is wrong. Can't you see how disgusting that is?

Ha! "Angry man" for pointing out that your dismissal of this story (based on....well, nothing at this point) is a bit premature?

Come on! Of course "blackmail" is wrong. But Payton's predictable denial of everything does not make the claim "unfounded"---do you really believe this??

It may be that this is made up, in which case Payton will have "foundation" for suing his accuser and will win the case.

    Geez, indeed.

  16. As of right now, these are unfounded and unproven allegations made by a former employee who attempted to extort a large sum of money from the Saints by threatening to go public with these allegations. The whole thing seems quite absurd. He makes it sound like the Saints locker room as a vicodin-dispensing machine that spits out pills like they're Skittles. I have a hard time believing any of this crap is true.

It's absurd to consider that a guy might have a vicodin addiction because he is a HC in the NFL??

Yeah, OK. That's a very convincing argument.

Anyway, I think we are all aware that the allegations are as of yet unproven. As for being "unfounded" how did you come to that conclusion? Oh, that's right---you have no idea if they are unfounded.

Look, if this guy is making up this stuff, he's committing libel and will be sued by Payton and will be financially ruined. I am assuming that he has been made aware of this by his lawyer---yet he still brought forth the suit.

Think of that before you dismiss it.
