Round 1 Playoff: Colts at Bills - Sat. 1/9 1:05pm
wjag replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
There is no fiber in my being that believes the Bills season is over at 1600 on Saturday. None. Of course the Colts will fight to the end. That's what is expected. I expect some anxious moments in the game. Taylor had a decent year. He's at 5.0 average for the season. He played well last week against a bad run defense. But take away that last game and he looks rather average. He's averaging 73 yards a game WITH that 253 yard outlier. Are we giving him too much credit? after the game score, the stats are: attempts, yards, average/rush, TDs. I've bolded and separated his weekly totals. Sun 1/3 vs JAX W 28-14 30 253 8.4 2 Sun 12/27 @PIT L 28-24 18 74 4.12 1 Sun 12/20 vs HOU W 27-20 16 83 5.2 1 Sun 12/13 @ LV W 44-27 20 150 7.5 2 Sun 12/6 @ HOU W 26-20 13 91 7.00 2 Sun 11/22 vs GB W 34-31 OT 22 90 4.10 1 Thu 11/12 @ TEN W 34-17 7 12 1.7 0 Sun 11/8 vs BAL L 24-10 6 27 4.5 1 Sun 11/1 @ DET W 41-21 11 22 2.0 0 Sun 10/18 vs CIN W 31-27 12 60 5.0 0 Sun 10/11 @ CLE L 32-23 12 57 4.8 1 Sun 10/4 @ CHI W 19-11 17 68 4.0 0 Sun 9/27 vs NYJ W 36-7 13 59 4.5 1 Sun 9/20 vs MIN W 28-11 26 101 3.9 Sun 9/13 @ JAX L 27-20 9 22 2.4 0 -

The fact that Indy faced Watson is interesting. So I went and looked at their most meaningful stats. Game 1: Colts win 26-20 Watson: 343 yards passing, 0 TDS Texans Rushing: <100 TOP: Colts 33m Rivers: 285 yards, 2 TDs Taylor: 93 yards rushing, team: 114 yards Sacks: 5!! (Buckner 2, J Houston 3) Game 2: Colts win 27-20 Watson: 373 yards, 2 TDs Texans Rushing: <100 TOP: Texans 30.5m Rivers: 228 yards, 2TDs Taylor: 83 yards, team: 127 yards Sacks: 5!! (Buckner 3, Autry 1.5, Lewis: .5) As I recall, there was also a late fumble in one of these games near the goal line stopping a late Texans drive. -
I wonder if he gets some residuals from Bose.

Yep.. you don't build one of the best olines in football to let it walk next season.

Healthy teams win the playoffs. I can't believe how healthy Buffalo is going into this game. OLINE, DLINE, RBs, TEs, DBs, LBs and most of the WRs. This team is deeper talent-wise than anyone else in the playoffs. No one is on IR. They're poised to make some noise in the playoffs.

Round 1 Playoff: Colts at Bills - Sat. 1/9 1:05pm

Here is my take from the Miami game. Buffalo was ineffective on early down throws. That put them in 3rd and long and Miami came out with their amoeba defense. It caused so much confusion on the line calls that it even forced a Buffalo time out called from the sidelines. Eventually, the first down passes started to connect and the 2nd and 3rd downs were more make-able. That is when I thought the game changed. I'm not so sure Buffalo adjusted to Miami as much as they started getting completions. Thoughts? -
Round 1 Playoff: Colts at Bills - Sat. 1/9 1:05pm

I think the formula that has worked effectively over the last couple of months is getting 7-8 yards on first down throws. Scoring drives of 8-10 plays has a cumulative effect of slowing down the pass rush. Indy fans have seen it repeated over and over in the last few games. Fast starts, slow finishes. The occasional Bills handoff game is only necessary to keep them biting on the RPOs. This is not a running team. It only becomes a running team when the other team's defense is out of gas. As to the Bills stopping the run, I think this is where you are going to see the benefit of 8 healthy rotational DLinemen and three healthy LBs. I would imagine Indy's front four is tired. Buckner is dinged. Have them chase Josh around a bit and wear them down. Is it Saturday yet? -

Some executives view Allen as preferable to Mahomes long term
wjag replied to Big Turk's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Agreed. I want to believe what I see now is the baseline, and what happens this week and next is the next level. With Rodgers and Mahomes being on a bye this week, it seems like it has been Josh Allen 24-7 in media coverage. The convo will definitely be interesting when the new seedings are out next week. The only two games I care about this weekend are Buffalo vs Indy and Cleveland vs Pittsburgh. I want the Jackson Mahomes matchup. Because I believe Mahomes will cancel out Jackson. I want to get to a belief structure that Allen will cancel out Jackson. I'm not there yet. Mahomes has earned that respect, Allen can earn it too with big wins over Jackson or Mahomes. -

I agree. But here's the but. You gots to show it early. That will keep one of those DB spies from falling into the zone. -
Josh Allen named AFC Offensive Player of the Month

Bookends to the regular season. Sure was a fun month of December to be a Bills fan. Erasing the national narrative and image one game after the next. -
Do you want to meet Brady in Super Bowl?
wjag replied to Artem Lipatov's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Yes. Superbowl and an exorcism would be great. Be the best, beat the best. -
The thing I was thinking about today was the amount of material we now have access to. Back in the 90s, it was the Courier Express and Buffalo Evening News. And that was it. Monday morning had extensive write ups about the Bills and the other games. And then it was an article or two per day until Sunday. Now you can lose an entire day just wandering around youtube for clips. The instant information we have now was unheard of back then.

I find him entertaining. You can slowly see him coming around to Buffalo. Remember he’s paid to stir things up. Marshall is the Bills cheerleader on that show. Nick is a KC fan.

Dion Dawkins: A Letter to Bills Mafia, Part II
wjag replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I have no doubt he did. Have you listened to his interviews? If not, dig one up. He's a good listen. Articulate, insightful. One thing that McDermott and Beane stressed a few years ago, was selecting high character players. This team has them at every position. -

When you look at the gauntlet of games that the Bills just came through since the Hail Murray, show me another team that has been as tested Arizona: Bills get a red hot Zona team that lost an absolute thriller to the Phins the week before. Murray can't be contained. He'll scramble his way to a victory. Allen and offense playing behind after lackluster 3rd quarter. Allen leads them to victory and leaves 31 seconds on the clock. Too tall Andre Hopkins literally steals the ball from three of our best defensive backs. Crazy, season altering ending (if you read Dion Dawkin's letter). Bye week: Bills have to listen to two weeks of critique about the Hopkins play. Chargers: Out of the bye week after a comeback thriller was denied. Bosa on a one-man mission. Herbert the shiny new toy. Buffalo struggles to contain Bosa for a good chunk of the game. Herbert throws for 317, Josh 157. Line makes adjustments and Bosa is somewhat neutralized, but he walks away with 8 tackles and three sacks. He was a menace. Bills survive Chargers. Could be wrong about the timing, but I think this is when Winters is moved off of line. San Francisco: MNF. Narrative all week was Allen and Bills need some mojo. Tua is coming, AFC East coming down to the wire week 16. SF is wrecked by injuries, but they have a savant for a head coach who will neutralize Allen. Saleh this, Saleh that.. Allen comes out and puts on an absolute clinic. The tide begins to turn. Steelers: SNF. Second game under the national glare. Big Ben and his five yards at a crack offense invades WNY. Standoff for much of the first half until Taron Johnson makes the play of the game. Buffalo comes out and remembers they have the front runner for OPOY and throws to him setting up TDs. Denver: Third game with national attention. Denver and their big bad Nick Fangio defense. Denver wheels come off quick and Buffalo runs them out of the building starting in the second quarter. AFC East secured. Fans go crazy at airport at 2a. Patriots: MNF again. National attention again. Can the Bills sweep the Patriots? Belichick won't let that happen. Bills blow the Patriots out. Belichick gets booked for assault on a telephone. Josh Allen is throwing TDs all over the place. Dolphins: 1 O'clock game for the first time in forever. Miami with everything to play for. You know the story. A big time scoring defense was embarrassed. In fact their number 1 scoring defense finishes at number 5. Ouch. The common thread. Bills played a gauntlet of good defenses, some highly regarded QBs, coaches and players and dismantled each and every one of them. They literally got better each game. They cut down on penalties. They stayed reasonably healthy for this time of year. Now the second season starts. Show me a team that has played the level of competition that Buffalo has starting with Seattle... This team is seasoned for post season play. What looked like an absolutely killer schedule has really battle tested this team. Let the postseason fun begin. -
What is the second-most important position on a football team?
wjag replied to LeviF's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I'm going with LT for most right-handed QB teams, RT for the rare lefty out there. With the new protective rules on QBs these days, maybe it is less so. But a good blind side hit on a QB is about the most satisfying play in football. Especially if it results in a fumble too. -
Oh that's right. It was the I-HC. I forgot him. I was thinking it was the OC or DC or other minions.
