Texans Sign Cato June

Posted by Mike Florio on April 4, 2009, 2:19 p.m.

He was dumped by the Bucs as part of a late February purge. And he has remained available ever since.

But he finally has a new home.

Linebacker Cato June, a Tampa Two weakside specialist for his entire career, has agreed to terms with the Texans, according to the Houston Chronicle.

He has signed a one-year, $1.5 million contract with a $500,000 signing bonus. The deal can be worth as much as $2 million, with incentives.

June started his career in Indianpolis before joining the Bucs in 2007.

The Bills must not have wanted him that bad.

good for him. I like what the Texans are doing actually. Very quietly putting together a nice team. I would not be surprised if those guys won the AFC south. I know i will get blasted for that. But who thought the Cards were gonna be in the SB?

the afc south is a tough division, but the texans will be better than the jags and would be better than the colts if they had a great QB

The linebackers still available in free agency are still pretty deep.

Guys like Freddie Keiaho, Derrick Brooks, Marcus Washington and Rosevelt Colvin are still available.

The Bills are clearly going to plow through the draft before they make any more FA moves.

yup

The Texans are a good team. I don't know about them winning the division, mainly because the AFC South is very tough. The Texans' Defense is very solid, and Andre Johnson is arguably the best WR in the NFL. The biggest question marks for the Texans are at QB and O-Line. Is Schaub the right man at QB? And can the O-Line protect Schaub on a more consistent basis?

as I said earlier, the entire AFC South is better than us, and this just puts the Texans that much more ahead. A guy like June or Crowell represent significant upgrades over Ellison. I honestly can not believe Jauron feels good about him as a starter. Almost anyone who watches the Bills, be it a fan or media member, realize he is a guy who plays hard on every play, but simply does not have much size or talent. I honestly am bummed we couldn't spend a few mil and upgrade this position through FA. I still have hope that Keiaho will sign with us after the draft... it's not a position we need to improve by wasting a draft pick when we have so many other holes.

I think we started to see the Colts decline last year. Not to mention Dungy leaving. I think he saw that the end was near for them. Jags are a mess. They do not have a qb. Oline is suspect. Tayler left. Matt Jones wasn't an integral part but still was a wasted first rounder. There D is still good but isn't what it was with Stroud in the middle. That leaves Tennesse. Very good defense, but once again they lost Haynesworth. Kerry Collins is stable but one good hit away from retirement. They have a very very pedestrian Offense. Mix all that together and i think the Texans have a very nice shot at the division. A lot does depend on Schaubb stepping up. I got to watch him here in Atlanta when he played for Vick. The guy seemed to have it all. This could be the season he breaks out. The have a very good defensive front seven. They do need help on the Oline, and some secondary issues. But this coul dbe the season they make the playoffs finally. Id love to see them make it and Dallas sit home again. Not as much as i want Buffalo in it.

I gotta agree with the poster here.

Every single team other than the Texans are on the decline. Haynesworth is a big loss to Tennessee. Colts seemed to have all ready of peaked, they are still really good, but declining. Jags seem to be a team that has lost their identity, they may even be looking for a replacement of their QB and the loss of Taylor doesn't help.

Texans on the other hand are improving. I think Schaubb is a very underrated QB just check out these stats

http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/6849

for you lazy folks 92.7qb rating 15 tds 10 ints over a %66 completion, 8 yards per attempt and over 276 yards passing a game.

This team is on the rise.

But the AFC east is tougher

I wouldn't mind signing Derrick Brooks as a 1-2 year stop-gap measure, but nothing more. And can you imagine playing in Buffalo after playing an entire career in Tampa? Brrr!

Colvin is still under contract with the Patriots, I believe. And I'll happily pass on him.

I don't know much about Marcus Washington, honestly, except that he's old like Cato (not old like Derrick).

I would think Keiaho is the #1 guy left on the FO's radar, no?

I'm still annoyed by the fact that both Crowell and June could've been had for one year deals at only $2M. We should've signed one of them.

Crowell was a mistake. They should have gotten a deal done. There still must have been bad blood from last year.....

I think you have to realize it's not about the money. Just because we've heard of the player before, that does not mean we should sign him. The Bills probably decided that despite his low price-tag, they would be better off bringing in someone else (whether it be a vet or a rookie). You bring guys in for a visit to determine whether or not they're a fit. He obviously wasn't. If he was, they would have signed him to a deal like that.
