Tipster19 Posted March 22, 2009 Share Posted March 22, 2009 It seems like the focus and criticism of the Bills' last few drafts have been about our early rds but I don't think that they are getting credit for what they have been quietly assembling later in the draft the last few years. Here's the 5th, 6th and 7th rders from the 2006-2008 drafts. 2006 5th rd/#134- DT Kyle Williams 5th rd/#143- OL Brad Butler 6th rd/#178- OLB Keith Ellison 7th rd/#216- OL Terrance Pennington 7th rd/#248- OG Aaron Mertz We didn't hit too good in the 7th rd with our picks but I applaud the effort and definitely think that we found great value with our 5th and 6th rders. 2007 6th rd/#184- DB John Wendling 7th rd/#222- HB Derek Schouman 7th rd/#239- DE C. J. Ah You I think Schouman is going to be a good player for us for quite sometime but time will tell. Unfortunately we missed on Ah You but I guess it's like the old cliche that you can't win 'em all. i'm not sure about Wendling so any input on this player would be appreciated. 2008 5th rd/#147- OLB Alvin Bowen 6th rd/#179- RB Xavier Omon 7th rd/#219- OL Demetrius Bell 7th rd-#224- WR Steve Johnson It was too bad that Bowen got hurt so early but maybe we get compensated this year with this pick. The same can be said about Omon, especially during Lynch's suspension. I think that we really nailed it in the 7th rd. This was a great late draft for us. *In memory- Buffalo's long time college scout Bob Ryan passed away suddenly in Hawaii on March 11. Ryan served on the Bills scouting staff for 30 years. Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family. they have done well at the back of the draft, but that is not how you build championships. you need to draft the best of the top athletes and be able to turn them into good players for your team. That is where most of the money and time goes. What has anybody from the 07 draft done for this team? Wendling jumps over the center but doesn't block kicks. Can't judge last years draft because of injuries. Johnson has shown some glimpses. Oman was a bad pick, why are trying to sign a 3rd running back? I think that we have a decent core right now and this year's draft could be very pivotal for us and I'm referring to ALL 7 rds, not just the early picks. T19, I think in the salary cap era it's almost essential to find quality depth and situational players in the late rounds. You've got to hit with your first and second rounders, more so in a smaller market. Someone will mention Brady or Houshmandzadeh, but they're the late round exceptions. The Bills have plenty of hard-working guys who serve important functions. At the same time, I can't find an impact player who's been drafted by Buffalo and can turn a game around. Not yet at least, although Evans is close IMO. Peters has the ability. McKelvin might be, and I have high hopes for Trent. Schobel about 3 years ago was close. Not all of this goes against Levy/Brandon either. The point remains that you should find solid role players in the bottom rounds, while locating impact types in rounds 1-3. The Bills finding average to above average players early does not make up for their lack of true impact players. I can't imagine if they had a legit pass rusher when Schobel went down because it surely would have affected the outcome of multiple games. Finding role players late with decent players early has partially facilitated this franchise's mediocrity. It's not enough. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

He's a solid pickup in the 7th round for potential and production, but he's not knocking on the door of being a breakout superstar. He ranked 28th among rookies in receptions, behind some fullbacks and several players who was drafted after him. He looked good on a few plays, and I'm excited about his future, but I don't know if he's yet broken out of the Fast Freddie Smith/Antonio Brown/Clarence Coleman range.
