Watching the speech today and the 2 million people packed into The Mall, I realized that for good or bad, Obama is what the country needs in the presidency right now. I think after Bush's 8 years of doing what he felt was right and not defending his decisions or communicating with the American people, Americans are starved for a communicator in the White House. The country is down, and needs a comforting voice, someone to tell them everything will be ok. The country needs hope, something they can latch onto. Bush just went ahead and did what he had to do regardless of what the public thought of him (which I admired) which destroyed morale like it would in any office with a boss like that, not to mention the media making every effort to ruin him. Americans also need a good story, which Obama certainly is, anybody that didn't feel proud to be an American today with the whole process and the historic moment (even if you don't agree with Obama) has real issues. I'm willing to give Obama a chance, I think every President deserves at least that. Besides, in these times do you really want him to fail? Country First. blzrul Posted January 21, 2009 Share Posted January 21, 2009 I think that Obama is a very dangerous man. Not to us - to our enemies. He understands very well how to appeal to the moderate and sway people to his side, even while they may not believe in his idealogy. Now imagine President Obama splitting the Muslim world, isolating the fanatics and swaying the moderates to realize that it makes more sense to work with us than against us. Does anyone here doubt he can do it? And does anything think that watching the worldwide reaction to President Obama isn't causing the evildoers to wonder if maybe the tide is turning against him? Maybe we have. I listened to Obama today and I clearly heard "government isn't the answer". America seems to have forgotten that WE outnumber the politicians. For the past two decades we've allowed ourselves to be divided against each other. This recent election is not only a repudiation of that, but perhaps America learning something we seem to have forgotten - the power really is with the people. Moreso here than anywhere. Here, here!!! Agree 100% Problem is Obama is not the guy that you are talking about. He is a socialist. Government run health care is saying government is the answer. The US is more divided than ever. Left vs Right. Country has to decide whether we are going to be a capitalist, self sufficient society or are we gonna go euro/Canadian style and go socialism. I would alter your first three: 1) Make better use of tax money collected. (Currently the USA has among the lowest tax burdens of any industrialized nation.) 2) Build a strong military for DEFENSE, but will not attack other nations solely as an act of aggression. 3) Make government more responsive to the citizens, regardless of their personal wealth I agree with #4, and, probably add a few. EVERY other industrialized nation has a form of universal health care (for all their citizens). Does that make EVERY other industrialized nation "Socialist"? You need to stop with the knee-jerk responses. There are socialistic aspects to every "free market" or "democratic" system...there are NO pure political or economic systems left, except for totalitarian systems. Dwight Drane Posted January 21, 2009 Share Posted January 21, 2009 Obama is the right guy in the sense that he will have the best shot at keeping the younger generation under control as we head into relative chaos. He has built up good will and hope, especially with the age group that has the potential to cause the most damage with civil unrest as our banking system is reset and states fail to make unemployment, pension, and welfare payments. The final nail in our economic coffin will closely coencide with military ramp up. He is going to have to convince these kids that we need to work together....and that includes them giving their service to the government/military. At some point it will not be their choice however. It's game-on folks. Obama was groomed for this point in history. It isn't a question of how high he can lift us up in glory, but how long he can keep us from falling apart. I am a conservative by nature, and I've never voted for a Democrat. That being said, I was truly moved today during the inaugural ceremony. Obama seems to have the right combination of reverence for our past, a plan for our future, and a way to re-invigorate American pride. I was very impressed with his speech today; he has more charisma in his little finger than the last three presidents combined. I will still disagree with him on certain fundamental issues, but regardless of that fact, I'm ready to be lead by him. I couldn't agree more that he's what we need at this time. bills_fan_in_raleigh Posted January 21, 2009 Share Posted January 21, 2009 Hopefully the message of how America has faced tough times before and lifted itself up via a bipartisan approach and rallying the people behind the plan will resonate with those who still want us divided. We finally have a president who appears to want to communicate directly with the American people and hopefully more folks will quit listening to the talking heads and listen to what the President is actually saying. Its time to end these Messiah, B. Hussein etc comments and claims. Its time to grow up and find ways to fix the mess that we have created by our own personal and corporate greed and for feeding the corruption/greed known as Washington.
