Jets’ RB Chatman suspended four games

Running back Jesse Chatman of the New York Jets has been suspended without pay for the team’s first four regular-season games of 2008 for violating the NFL Policy on Steroids and Related Substances.

 

Chatman’s suspension begins on Saturday, August 30. He is eligible to return to the Jets’ active roster on Monday, September 29 following the team’s September 28 game against the Arizona Cardinals.

 

Additionally, the Jets released two players, LB Matt Chatham and DB Hank Poteat, and waived 18 others:

 

WRs David Ball, Larry Brackins and Paul Raymond, OLs Jacob Bender, Stanley Daniels, Kyle DeVan, Nate Garner and Matt McChesney, DBs Rudy Burgess and James Ihedigbo, RB Jehuu Caulcrick, DLs Thomas Johnson, Ropati Pitoitua and Bryan Mattison, LBs Blair Phillips and Brandon Renkart, and TEs Jason Pociask and A.J. Schable.

 

The Jets also placed S Cameron Worrell on the Waived/Injured list.

 

 

Harrington, Pollard among 21 waived by Falcons

The Atlanta Falcons made 22 roster moves to reach the NFL’s mandatory 53-player limit Saturday.

 

“We are pleased about our roster heading into the 2008 season,” General Manager Thomas Dimitroff said. “I’m satisfied with the process we went through to get to this point including OTAs, mini-camp, training camp and the preseason. Our coaching staff did a good job guiding our players over the past five months and I’m very proud of the team our staff put together. I’m looking forward to starting the regular season.”

 

The Falcons waived: OL D’Anthony Batiste, S Eric Brock, OL Michael Butterworth, S Deke Cooper, C Doug Datish, DE Willie Evans, QB Joey Harrington, CB Wilrey Fontenot, OL Kynan Forney, DE Brandon Miller, DT Rashad Moore, OL Terrance Pennington, LB Mickey Pimentel, TE Marcus Pollard, CB Glenn Sharpe, DT Montavious Stanley, S Daren Stone, LB Cameron Vaughn, WR Eric Weems, WR Chandler Williams and TE Keith Zinger. Atlanta also placed RB Thomas Brown on injured reserve.

 

“It’s always difficult to release players knowing how hard everyone in the locker room has worked,” said head coach Mike Smith. “I feel good about the make-up of the 2008 Atlanta Falcons and I’m looking forward to coaching these players. I’m excited to get back to the practice field on Monday to continue preparing for the season opener against Detroit.”

 

Atlanta may also establish up to a nine-player practice squad, including International practice squad player, Noriaki Kinoshita, starting on Sunday, August 31.

 

 

Chargers release 20 players

The San Diego Chargers placed TE Scott Chandler on Reserve-Injured (toe) Saturday and released the following 20 players from their active roster to reach the NFL’s mandatory limit of 53 players:

 

LBs Antwan Applewhite, Eric Bakhtiari, Terna Nande and Carlos Polk, WRs Gary Banks and Mark Jones, safeties Tra Battle and Brian Bonner, CB Josh Bell, TE Wade Betschart, RBs Eldra Buckley and Marcus Thomas, DE Andre Coleman and Keith Grennan, DTs Lamar Divens and Keith Jackson, Gs Brandyn Dombrowski and Erik Robertson, and Ts Tyler Luellen and Tony Pape.

 

Chandler sustained the toe injury in Friday night’s preseason finale in San Francisco. He will miss the 2008 season.

 

 

Cardinals make roster moves

The Cardinals have released 22 players to reach the 53-player limit. The Cardinals released veteran linebackers Brandon Moore, Matt Stewart and Joe Tafoya. The Cardinals kept undrafted rookie linebacker Ali Highsmith and veteran Monty Beisel.

 

Other Cardinals cuts include cornerbacks Michael Adams, Travarous Bain, DeMario Minter, defensive end Jason Banks, running backs Steve Baylark, Chris Vincent, tackles Kelly Butler, Peter Clifford, defensive tackles Keilen Dykes, guard Jasper Harvey, safety Dennis Keyes, receivers Lance Long, Jamaica Rector, guard Carlton Medder, tight ends Brent Miller, Alex Shor, quarterback Anthony Morelli, and center Pat Ross.

Redskins release 22 ahead of cut-down deadline

Vikings cut QB Bollinger

The Vikings kept fifth-round draft pick John David Booty and released veteran quarterback Brooks Bollinger. The former Wisconsin quarterback spent the previous two seasons with the Vikings.

 

The Vikings also released kicker Steve Hauschka, receivers Jaymar Johnson, Nate Jones, Martin Nance, Darius Reynaud, cornerbacks Marcus Walker, Dee McCann, Brandon Sumrall, running back Albert Young, tight end Braden Jones, linebackers J Leman, Rufus Alexander, defensive ends Martail Burnett, Chris Norwell, centers Dan Mozes, Tim Mattran, tackle Chase Johnson and defensive tackle Leger Douzable.

Kansas City Chiefs President Carl Peterson announced on Saturday that the club has made 22 transactions in order to comply with the NFL mandatory roster cutdown to 53 players. NFL teams can designate an eight-man practice squad beginning on Monday, September 1st. The Chiefs currently own a roster exemption for international developmental player LB Aden Durde who will be placed on the practice squad on Monday.

 

Kansas City placed TE Michael Merritt on the Reserve/Non-Football Injury List (NFI). The Chiefs released T Anthony Alabi, TE Michael Allan, WR Jabari Arthur, CB Rashad Barksdale, K Connor Barth, S Khayyam Burns, DE Johnny Dingle, G Edwin Harrison, WR Sergiori Joachim, LB E.J. Kuale, G Travis Leffew, DT Derek Lokey, FB Chris Manderino, WR Kevin McMahan, LB Steve Octavien, DE Jason Parker, LB LeRue Rumph, WR Bobby Sippio, C Rob Smith, G Tre Stallings and T Will Svitek.

 

 

Giants waive K Huston, sign 44-year-old Carney

The New York Giants waived 19 players Saturday, including kicker Josh Huston who kicked in the team’s final three preseason games.

 

Lawrence Tynes, the Giants’ starting kicker last season, has been unable to practice due to a knee injury, leading the team to sign 44-year-old John Carney Saturday.

 

In addition to Huston, the Giants waived:

 

QB Andre’ Woodson, offensive linemen Andrew Bain, Kurt Quarterman, Clifford Louis and Na’Shan Goddard; FB Robert Douglas; TEs Eric Butler and Jerome Collins; WRs Brandon London and Marcus Monk; DEs Wallace Gilberry and Alex Morrow; DTs Ogemdi Nwagbuo and Jeremy Clark; LBs Tank Daniels and James Terry; DBs Geoffrey Pope and Darren Barnett.

 

Three players were placed on injured reserve: QB Anthony Wright (neck), T Guy Whimper (broken foot) and rookie C Digger Bujnoch (sprained knee).

 

The contract of S Stuart Schweigert was terminated.

 

 

McDougle among Eagles’ cuts

The Eagles cut veteran defensive end Jerome McDougle as the team released 12 players to trim down to the 53-player limit.

 

McDougle, 29, was selected 15th overall in 2003, but has been hampered by injuries during his career. He missed the entire 2007 season after injuring his right triceps in preseason.

 

The Eagles also released cornerback Kyle Arrington, fullbacks Jed Collins and Jason Davis, receivers Michael Gasperson and Shaheer McBride, defensive tackles Mike Marquardt and Montae Reagor, linebackers Justin Roland and Andy Studebaker, tight end Kris Wilson and guard Scott Young.

 

The team also placed tackle King Dunlap (ankle) and guard Mike Gibson on the injured-reserve list.

Colts release QBs Gray, Lorenzen, RB Keith

Backup quarterbacks Jared Lorenzen and Quinn Gray were among the players waived by the Colts Saturday. The move leaves the team with two active quarterbacks in Peyton Manning and Jim Sorgi.

With Scott gone and both Saturday and Lilja out, that means a gimpy Manning -- if he's ready for the opener -- will have three new offensive linemen in front of him.

Cowboys cut four receivers

The Cowboys cut receivers Danny Amendola, Mark Bradford, Mike Jefferson and Todd Lowber on Saturday. A mild surprise considering the numerous injuries the Cowboys have suffered at receiver.

 

The Cowboys also cut tight ends Drew Atchison, Rodney Hannah, nose tackles Remi Ayodele, Junior Siavii, quarterback Richard Bartel, running backs Alonzo Coleman, Keon Lattimore, fullback Julius Crosslin, safety Dowayne Davis, defensive ends Marcus Dixon, Marcus Smith, linebackers Tearrius George, Darrell Robertson, Tyson Smith, Erik Walden, tackle Ryan Gibbons, and Cory Lekkerkerer.

Broncos cut four receivers

The Broncos cut receiver Glenn Martinez, along with Marquay McDainel and Clifford Russell. Veteran Keary Colbert, who signed with the Broncos during the offseason, had been locked in a battle for a final roster spot. Colbert spent his previous four seasons with the Panthers.

 

The Broncos also cut quarterback Darrell Hackney, tight end Chad Mustard, offensive linemen P.J. Alexander, Dylan Gandy, Mitch Erickson, defensive ends Larry Birdine, Paul Carrington, defensive tackle Steven Harris, linebacker Jordan Beck, cornerbacks Wale Dada, Tyrone Poole, safeties Josh Barrett, Vickiel Vaughn and unter Sam Paulescu.

 

The Broncos placed tight end Brett Pierce on the waived/injured list, and placed fullback Cecil Sapp and running back Anthony Alridge on the injured-reserve list.

The Detroit Lions announced Saturday that they have placed RB Brian Calhoun and RB Aveion Cason on the Reserved/Injured list and released 20 players to trim their roster down to the NFL-mandated 53-man limit prior to the 6 p.m. ET league deadline.

DB Bryant, QB Gutierrez among 18 waived by Pats

Defensive back Fernando Bryant and quarterback Matt Gutierrez were among the 18 players released by the New England Patriots Saturday. Bryant’s release, along with that of DB Jason Webster on Aug. 26 removes two veteran players with starting experience brought in this offseason to help replace Asante Samuel.

 

Gutierrez was battling Matt Cassel to become the Patriots’ backup QB behind Tom Brady.

 

In addition to Bryant and Gutierrez , the Patriots released the following players:

 

Defensive linemen Titus Adams and Santonio Thomas, cornerback Mike Richardson, tight end Tyson DeVree, safety Mark Dillard, center Mike Flynnn, running back BenJarvus Green-Ellis, linebackers Victor Hobson and Vince Redd, tackle Stephen Sene, defensive back Antwain Spann and guard John Welbourn.

 

Additionally, the Patriots placed LB Bo Ruud and DL Kenny Smith on the seserve/injured list and T Oliver Ross on the reserve/non-football injury list.

Packers release RBs Morency, Herron

The Green Bay Packers released 19 players Saturday including running backs Vernand Morency and Noah Herron.

 

The Packers also placed three on injured reserve.

 

Also released Saturday were wide receiver Jake Allen, cornerback Scorpio Babers, defensive tackle Conrad Bolston, center Brennen Carvalho, safety Tyrone Culver, linebacker Spencer Havner, tight end Joey Haynos, guard Ryan Keenan, linebacker Danny Lansanah, defensive tackle Alfred Malone, defensive tackle Daniel Muir, cornerback Joe Porter, wide receiver Johnny Quinn, wide receiver Taj Smith, wide receiver Brett Swain, tackle Orrin Thompson and fullback Corey White.

 

Defensive tackle Rodney Allen, center Junius Coston and long snapper J.J. Jansen were placed on injured reserve.

A bit surprised about the Bryant cut by the Pats*--he and Webster both got the ax before the season. Pretty funny, too, considering how thin they are at the position. Teams may be able to rack up some good yards on them through the air this season.....
