Thanks, beware scam artists like this. I called and spoke with the sales guy and asked him to cancel. He told me it was going to be $185 cancellation fee and gave me attitude, told me it was already on the pallets and he was going to charge me an additional restocking fee, then hung up. I called and asked to speak with a manager and he cancelled my whole order- and did not charge me.

So I want a Canon 40 D. Any suggestions? I will check out Abes.

Thanks Poojer!

B&H is legit and has a sterling rep (and fairly good prices too). You can't go wrong with them . . .

They have been linked to several times in this thread and I am another to concur. For online dealers, it's hard to beat B&H. Their prices are good and they are trustworthy. I order from them when I buy camera gear online. One ultracompact I bought had problems and they shipped me a new one hassle-free.

As soon as I saw this thread title, I knew exactly where it was going. I can't tell you how glad I am to hear you got your full refund back. I got pulled into this a couple of years ago looking for a 28-135mm IS lens for my 20D, ordered it at a ridiculous price from some company like digitalcameradeals.com, etc., and suddenly I get an email saying to call to confirm my credit card, and from that moment up, the bullshiit began. A quick google called them out, and I was able to get everything cancelled. But based on what I was reading online, a lot of people don't, and it's really a shame.

I recently was googling for an HD camcorder, came across another amazing price at shopdigitaldirect.com, googled the company, and hey -- whatdayaknow, they're a scam. And here's a guy who goes after people like this all the time.

That said, I spent a good dime on my 20D, and in hindsight, I really should have just stuck to the Rebel. The only thing the 20D had that the Rebel did not was a quick-as-shiiit sports mode that took something like 97 pictures a second. I don't regret the 20D, but the Rebel really seems to be a helluva camera for the relative price. Plus, you can use the money you saved on lenses.

Tell me more. If I'm going to be shooting anything for the new gig, it'll be sports-related ...

here is the deal on that. the rebel xsi takes 3.5 frames/sec. That is marginal for sports photography. Very marginal. The 40D takes 6-6.5/sec and that may mean the difference between getting the shot and missing it. Here are the shots I took with my XTi at 3 frames/sec:

You'll see the ball in several frames if you look through the photos, but imagine some of the sequences if there were 2x the number of images:

Crikey, he's getting big. I remember when ...

Yeah, that is slow. IIRC, even my brother's old, old A-1s took five or six/sec with the autowinder. (Of course, that battery pack also made the camera weigh ten pounds, or at least it seemed like it at the time.)

I just stopped by the office to talk to our photog, and I think she said she was looking at a 20D online last night. I warned her about Pete's experience ...

20D is 5 frames/sec.

If you are serious about this stuff - we can talk on the phone. I research the hell out of this stuff, and well, I have 2 degrees in optics, so that helps. :worthy:

Lori, one thing to keep in mind (though I don't think it's as much an issue as when I first got my 20D a couplafew years ago) is you want to ensure you have a speedy compact flash card in the camera so it can write the data as fast as it comes in. But yeah, I'm clicking off about 5 frames per second, and when you have an active little boy like mine you need all the speed you can get.

Thanks to both you and SDS for the advice ... and I miss reading about the boy. That's one TBD blog I wish we still had ...

The other thing is that even if you can shoot 5fps, you really need a fast lens for sports too -- otherwise you will still get blurry pictures.

Sports photography is really expensive...

That is why I stay with Pentax... Just buy the body and say see ya later... Only camera that is backward compatible with all their past lens... Believe it or not, I still use my K/Ka lens I had with my old SuperProgram (mid 1980's)... Sure they don't have all the features of the newer lens... But, they still are compatible.

To Pete and all...while pricing a camcorder I came across a bunch of the scammers, but ultimately found www.resellerratings.com, which lists and provides user reviews of all the online resellers and whether they are legit. If you find a good price somewhere, and want to double check, just type the site URL in the search bar and it will immediately take you to reviews and rankings. I was stunned at the amount of info here.

If you buy online a lot, bookmark this site.

Actually, no. Some of those sites (like DealNews.com) will pull pricing from some scammers. I suspect they get rid of them pretty quickly, but they still appear. So even if you find what you like there, you should still check out the website if it seems too good to be true.
