EVANS UPDATE: Bills COO Russ Brandon gave an update on Lee Evans' long term status with the club beyond this the final year of his rookie contract.

 

“We take a hard look at that, from the standpoint of how we go about building this roster short and long term," said Brandon. "Lee is a core player in this organization and we want him to be here for many years to come. We will be proactive in looking at not only Lee’s situaition but other players we identify. That’s the way we feel we can continue to build this good young roster and having core players.''

An equally likely scenario...Evans has the greater leverage, IMO.

Let's see what kinda year he has this year....with HOPEFULLY a solidified quarterback at the helm for the whole season..barring any injuries.

With injuries so common in the modern era of NFL, there is no way in hell a professional football player will pass up guaranteed money; if Bills make him a respectable offer and the market rate prior to the season starting Lee will certainly sign on the dotted line. Get it done it already.

Based on that statement by Brandon, I bet the Bills offer him a sheet by the end of the season and Evans is a Bill for another seven years. If not that, they tag him next year, pay him that money, and get a longer deal. Either way, I don't see Evans going anywhere next season, particularly not if the Bills get another WR target in the draft, and especially if they also add another young TE. Evans will like the direction the team is headed and he'll stay.

There's no rush to sign him up right now. Right now the team needs to focus on the draft and the upcoming season. We have all of this year to come to an agreement with Lee. If we add a nice, new weapon or two in the draft, Lee may WANT to stay more which will make negotiating easier. If our rookie wideout has a fantabulous season, we may not want to sign Lee long term (I'm not saying that will happen or that I want it to happen.) The bottom line is that we have more pressing needs RIGHT NOW and can address Lee's extension at a later date.

What RB really meant was - if we happen to draft Kelly & Sweed in the draft, I could care two hoots if Lee walks when his contract is up.

Well that won't happen unless we get a quality WR.

Also, what happens if we draft one of these young receivers and it ends up that they are a stud and are the true #1 receiver on the team. Why pay him #1 money before the season if they can pick one up and offer him much less after the season, with the security that if he doesn't like the offer, you still have a #1 receiver? I say let him play the year and then sign him if we need to.

That's a very good question. Money is the only reason I can think of now. A great season could build some loyalty. WR performance is so dependent upon the supporting cast and performance = $.
