Doesn't it kind of defeat the purpose if you are on the computer?

It is more of a symbolic gesture. From the google page:

Google users in the United States will notice today that we "turned the lights out" on the Google.com homepage as a gesture to raise awareness of a worldwide energy conservation effort called Earth Hour. As to why we don't do this permanently - it saves no energy; modern displays use the same amount of power regardless of what they display. However, you can do something to reduce the energy consumption of your home PC by joining the Climate Savers Computing Initiative.

Fair enough. I've got the lights out but still watching the basketball game.

I wish I had some Earth Hour T-Shirts to sell. :nana:

The back would say "France is 80% Nuclear. How about us?"

A hot chick at the local supermarket got out of a car with a bumper sticker that read, "Fight for clean energy, BAN NUCLEAR!"

I almost went to talk to her about it, but decided it wasn't worth the energy...

What's Brazil's energy breakdown, out of curiosity? Anyone know?

What's Brazil's energy breakdown, out of curiosity? Anyone know?

http://www.eia.doe.gov/emeu/cabs/Brazil/Background.html

Brazil is the 10th largest energy consumer in the world and the third largest in the Western Hemisphere, behind the United States and Canada. Total primary energy consumption in Brazil has increased significantly in recent years. In addition, Brazil has made great strides in increasing its total energy production, particularly oil, over the past decade. Increasing domestic oil production has been a long-term goal of the Brazilian government.

The largest share of Brazil’s total energy consumption comes from oil (48 percent, including ethanol), followed by hydroelectricity (35 percent) and natural gas (7 percent). The large share of hydroelectricity in Brazil’s energy mix represents the dependence of electricity generation on hydroelectric dams. Natural gas is currently a small share of total energy consumption, but attempts to diversify electricity generation from hydropower to gas-fired power plants should cause natural gas consumption to grow in coming years.

Thanks, KC. I knew they were heavily invested in hydroelectricity and ethanol, but didn't know how the %'s worked out. As many probably know, Brazil is 100% (or close) self-sufficient, energy-wise.

I was under the impression (dunno if it is mistaken, or not) that while Brazil has increased oil production, most of that increase is for export.

I'm in the lobby of the Hilton in Niagara Falls, Ontario and they've turned off all of the lobby lights except auxillary lighting. The Fallsview Casino has dimmed their great dome and the Skylon Tower is dark.

All in all, very cool. Go Mother Earth!

Wonderful idea...lets turn out the lights on the casino floor for Earth Hour.

Tomorrow's headlines read "Riot Breaks Out on Casino Floor...67 Injured"
