This one's easy....

Heart - just something about them grates on me.

Boston (pizz-poor timing for me to post this) - There towards the end a lot there songs started to sound the same (same three cords over and over)

REM - just waaaaaaaaaaay too pretentious for me

Meat Loaf - just because you can make a song 11 minutes long doesn't mean you should make EVERY song that long. :(

Good call on REM. But I question if there is ANYONE more pretentious and self important than Bono.

(Who's the lazy Mod that has yet to move this post to OTW?) I'm in trouble now.

Can't disagree more.

There aren't many good artists who haven't been accused of pretension at some point, anyway.

Maybe true, but for some reason it just seemed more "over-the-top" with REM. Before they got very popular and very mainstream they were pretty good, but as soon as they started getting a lot of attention, they just seem to become very preachy or something. Like they were the moral compass of American music. Kinda like how the Beastie Boys got so wrapped up on their "Free Tibet" stuff that they just started putting out more and more crap.

Bono... holy FRIGGIN CRAP is he somethin else. Who will lead us to the promise land Tedy Bruschi or this cat?

I guess we agree to disagree on REM.... (by the time I post this the thread will probably be moved I hope?)

BTW, who is that in your avatar? Love the old school Jays uni...

I'm going to guess John Olerud, because of the helmet reference. Let's see how wrong I am.

OK, lets go with local Buffalo bands. The worse is Boys of Summer. Because my friends like them I went and saw them last night. Not my first time either. Like every 5 years you need to learn a new song. At least look like you're into your own music too. Instead of going through the motions, can't wait to get out, and give me the money

Here is by far the BEST in Buffalo

Smashmouth... yeah they're pretty annoying too.

I hate them too but I was thinking of another band from the same time frame. The one I'm thinking of wrote a very dumb song as an ad for the NY Lottery, then they put it on their album.

Go to a U2 concert and you will change your mind! I promise!

I've seen/heard video of U2 concerts and I find Bono's posing and posturing repugnant. I'm also not big on ANTHEMS which seems to be U2's specialty.

But, I think pretty much everything sucks.

Is it John Olerud?

Yes it is, Its John Olerud , someone else here (maybe the same guy) had Pat borders for a while. Ah yes, guys from the Jays glory days, hopefully those days are back!

The only reason people included Metallica is because its cool to hate them because of the napster issue.

I agree with the Bono comment, that guy annoys me because he thinks he's so much better and is always preaching that i can't get past it to actually try to listen to much of their music

I am not really a Phish fan, but they are just about the most talented musicians in the world. So I guess your opinion shouldn't be respected. The band you are looking for is nickelback.

That's a good one. It reminds me of this South Park exchange (edited):

[Hell, waiting area. Many souls are there, wondering where they are, and why.]

Stephen: Where, where am I?

Speaker: Hello, newcomers, and welcome. Can everybody hear me? [taps the mic a few times] Hello? Can everybuh-? Okay. [the crowd quiets down] Uh, I'm the hell director. Uh, it looks like we have about 8,615 of you newbies today, and for those of you who are a little confused, uh, you are dead, and this is hell, so, abandon all hope and uh yada yada yada. Uh, we are now going to start the orientation process, which will last about-

Man 4: Hey, wait a minute, I shouldn't be here. I wa a totally strict and devout Protestant! I thought we went to heaven!

Hell Director: Yes, well I'm afraid you were wrong.

Soldier: I was a practicing Jehovah's Witness.

Hell Director: Uh, you picked the wrong religion as well.

Man 5: Well, who was right? Who gets into heaven?

Hell Director: I'm afraid it was the Mormons. Yes, the Mormons were the correct answer.

That kills me!

Ripoff of an old Rowan Atkison stand-up routine (he plays the Devil in a velvet smoking jacket), but still funny...

The USC field band!

Now THAT'S funny!

Can they be more full of themselves? They got some camera time in the Tusk video and now all of sudden they think they invented marching bands. Watching a USC football game is almost unbearable with them playing that song EVERY...... THREE........ MINUTES....

Loved it when Longhorns put an end to that last year.

It is Olerud. One of the sweetest swings I've ever seen.

Yeah, we can agree to disagree. I love the early REM stuff and while I do think the public posturing was over the top I'd rather have someone speaking what they believe, than not believing in or caring about much of anything, which is a far worse disease among kids today. I look to those bands of the 80s underground as actually trying to take on political concerns artfully -- and I don't think there are many REM songs that are out-and-out preachy.

I also have a huge bias in that I've been a big fan since my early teens and worked on a record of theirs. :flirt:

I thought that was Olerud... that's so great! This summer I was back home in WNY on vacation and cleaning out some posters and stuff at my mom's house I had from my younger days and ran across a poster of Kelly Freaking Gruber (with the mullet by the way)! It said Hot Corner on the top of the poster, (not sure if that's a veiled gay reference or not). I brought it back to Colorado with the idea of putting on the wall in my rec-room/sports room in the basement and one of my buddies was over at the house and saw it and started cracking up. He said I might be the only person in the world with a Kelly Gruber poster. It didn't make the final cut for posters that made the wall. Kelly's Heros, Shane Conlan and Thurman Thomas all did though. My wife insisted I buy those cheapo frames at Walmart though before I put them up.

Wow you worked with REM? On which album? Pretty cool, no offense meant in my original post about them. :flirt:

Kelly Gruber? :flirt:

Journey

Metallica

Fleetwood Mac

Dave Matthews Band

That is kinda funny that you mention Journey... Just reading through this post and seeing the REM references.

Actually, my reply has nothing to do with your post... Just the Journey reference and its connection to REM being discussed.

For the record I couldn't agree more with your assessment on Journey.

Now the tie in... I remember and old review on XRT (Chicago, 93.1 FM)... And Journey with relation to REM... The review was done in the early 1980's when Journey was on top... REM just rising. The term used for Journey was "monolith" and how REM would be hard pressed to crack that "monolith."

My point? I guess I don't have one... :flirt: Just thought of that connection and how over 20 years later people preceive that "monolith."... Which is clearly REM... And wow! They have lasted... Way more than Journey!

I am really starting to believe that popularity alone is the deciding factor that breeds comtempt in many. Win a Grammy, attempt to have a social conscience... Get thrownto the curb... Just don't have money or look like a rock star and you will be alright with some!

Take Dean's Bono reference... Wow! How much less self-serving can the guy be? Sure he is rich, looks and dresses the part of a "rock star" and is preceived as "pretentious"... Yet, his faith is strong and undying, has been married to the same woman since before the band was formed (well I think that still holds true)... Etc...

I guess preaching really bothers people?

I could ramble on and on... But, I guess my point is I am really shocked how people preceive things and the amount of "fluff" that gets in the way and if you aren't poor and starving... You must be self-serving...

Journey started as a GREAT band. An offshoot of Santana with Greg Rolie on vocals. The first couple of albums (Journey and Look Into the Future) were beautiful. Spacey, jazzy rock with top notch musicianship. I saw them in concert twice when they were good and it was a real treat.

Then came Steve Perry (AKA The Man Who Destroyed Journey). They changed their style from music to hits. They went from musicians to rock stars. Commercialism and pap plagued their souls! The garbage they spewed was some of the most annoying crap ever recorded. I saw them in concert with Perry and was sad, indeed.

Just remember, Journey was not always annoying.
