(OT) First time in Vegas

Simon

Recommended Posts

My wife really wants to go to Vegas so we're heading out for a week in a few days. Just wondering what there is to do for a guy who doesn't care for cities, lights, noise, casinos, crowds, etc.

If I had my druthers, I'd just get dropped in the middle of nowhere with a pack and come back in 4-5 days. However, to keep peace in the valley I've agreed to at least give the place a try. We're staying at the Tuscany near the Strip and have a car so there should be some options.

So what the hell can I do that doesn't involve toothless whores, retarded fratboys and teeming masses of derelict gamblers?

Well, one big part of vegas are the shows... Lord of the Dance, the Blue Men Group, etc... will fill a few hours and give you a taste of Vegas.

You coud also hit Emerils if you want to dine on some fancy, expensive food. Just walking around the gaudy casinos is worthwhile just to take in all the excesses...

Take a trip to the Hoover Dam....

Are there any fights coming up?

Well let's see. Some good things to do:

Must see : Momma Mia, pretty damn good show

There are several version of cirque de soleil - KA, Mystere, O and a nudie one

Blue Man group

Plenty of other shows

If you just like stupid fun, and easy going dinner - Tournament of Kings

Take the bus tour go see Grand Canyon, Red Rrock Canyon, Hoover Dam or others

Several high scale and discount malls

Go to the canal mall at the venetian

Go to the battle in front of TI

Couple of decent daytime magic acts. The one at Stardust is much better.

Lord of the Dance isn't there as a fulltime show anymore.

Try this, Simon. My wife and I have an agreement in place for when we finally get to Vegas: she'll do that w/ me if I attend a Celine Dion concert w/ her. Of course, now she says Celine only has another year left on her Vegas contract. If she doesn't re-up, it'll be tough for me to get my wife to get on that ride.

Other places to go outside of town are Red Rocks or The Valley of Fire SP. Red Rocks offers a scenic auto trail up to challenging climbs. Valley of Fire is where they filmed the Kirk and Picard vs Soren climax to Star Trek:Generations.

I spend about a third of the time on the strip looking at all the opulence, etc. It is interesting to see what all the losing can build! One hint: Avoid driving down the strip if possible, use the parallel streets.

Some of the best chefs have restraurants there (Nobu, Wolfgang Puck, Emeril, etc.) Vegas has turned into a top tier city.

Did that, first ride I have truly wanted to get off as quick as possible.

Simo, everything that has been mentioned so far loads of money. What is you budget. I am there at least twice a yr for the last twenty years, so I should be of some good help if I know your budget per day. And you are really going to have to budget if you are going to be there for a week. 4 days/ 3 night perfect for me

I just got back from there last night. I was with my girl for her birthday so it was a more realzing trip than I'm normally used too in Vegas (with the guys). We went to dinner at the top of the Stratosphere. The meal was very good and the view was awesome. The base of the Stratosphere was a rinky dink mall, which was surprising. Once you are up there, it is great so I would totally recommend dinner at the top. The mall across from the Venetian was loaded with good shopping so I'm sure your wife will like it there. Check out the Wynn too, there is a really nice bar back in the middle of it and the place is brand new and has that buzz to it.

If you are a big fan of Queen, then you should go see We will Rock you at Paris. The show was great and not nearly as expensive as Blue "balls" group.

Blue Man Group is very overrated.

If you’re into a desert hike this is one of the best in the area:

Scott’s suggestion of Hoover is a good one for the family- book tickets for the tour, it’s pretty amazing:

One of the absolute best dive bars in America, you can gauge the “accuracy” of this site once you’ve been to the hallowed grounds:

Another dive bar I like, but hardly the same caliber as above:

One other recommendation- this is a real old-fashioned gambling town, really the last I know of in Nevada. It’s an easy two hour drive, plus it’s located right down the road from maybe our best Western Ghost town named Rhyolite. I’ll link that here also- you’ll recognize Rhyolite since it’s one of Hollywood’s favorite location shoots for desert background. If you head to Beatty for a day/overnight you can also drop down another 40 minutes into out most awesome National Park in its full summer glory- Death Valley is just past Beatty. In fact I just got back from there yesterday after a 4 night campout ;-)
