you call me out on fallacies and I'll call you out from here on.  Deal?

I'll be honest, I didn't even read the initial post. Odd title if that was the point.

Also, no deal. "Lying" isn't a "fallacy" and it's the rhetorical device you (this would mean the collective "you" of leftists) weaponize the most.

But you can have this: when I rightly call into question your integrity and honesty, you can scream "ad hominem!" all you want, your reddit-addled brain not understanding that ad hominem is a valid rhetorical device, not a fallacy, under such circumstances.

Of course not.  Fallacies are the basis of many or your arguments.  The only place "lying" could be present in an argument is when a conclusion is based on false premises.  Fallacies are present in the formation of a conclusion from the premises.   All are fair game for criticism.  But "tricks" as Orlando called fallacies, are often purposely and stealthily used to deceive.

I'm not on reddit.

"up to".  weasel word.  when I have time I'll look up this persons expertise in these matters.

why would an economist be considered an expert on scientific studies?

Yes, but there is something called the replication crisis, primarily in "softer" fields like psychology.

Economists might be the last "social scientists" to have a shred of honesty.

This is not about one particular issue.  It's about absolutes.  Are there any?  Does logic exist?  Does truth exist?  Is it important?

We all use logical fallacies in our arguments, some more than others.  But would it be preferable to avoid them or not purposefully use them at all?

I think there are absolutes and that logic exists and is vital towards the search for truth which we all should want.

https://academicinfluence.com/inflection/study-guides/logical-fallacies#tu-quoque

A common fallacy deployed here lately has been "everyone does it so it's ok for he/me to do it".  I think this is a variation on #7 in the above link.  Ad hominems, appeals to authority, straw men and non sequiturs are in abundance here as well, from both sides..  Would it make for better debate if we tried to avoid these?  Or is that unrealistic or simply wrong?

I actually read the linked article and found it interesting. PPP is overflowing with examples of fallacies people use to prove others are wrong. Logic can be hard to find here. In a world of black vs white, grey can be hard to find. Also, politics and logic are completely different realms in today’s world.

Truth is what we think we know now, based on logical conclusions from the available knowledge.

I thought the examples in the article were great. I also wasn’t aware of some of the fallacies described. I find logic fascinating. It’s really applied mathematics imo.

Why would you consider him an authority on scientific research and then appeal to his authority?

See how this works?

On many occasions you have babbled on foolishly about the “banning of books” when in reality, no books have been banned. Below is one such example of your inane ramblings. The question - were you engaging in fallacy or outright lying through your teeth?

banning books is a slippery slope to banning more forms of artistic expression...oh, and more books.  and contraception. I'm glad u asked.  can we agree that reproduction is vital to the continued existence of a species?
