Roundybout Posted July 15 Posted July 15 Gee whiz, when you increase the cost to build something - the cost gets passed on to the consumer! Wow!

You could off set your costs by demanding your leaders in say CA or NY cut their tax rates, deregulate, and stop with the minimum wage insanity. Any freakout over these negligible increases in 3 of the 15 categories surely was met by you with the same level of concern as any of above mentioned fiscal policies by your local politicians. It should be seen as confirmation that Trump’s policies as part of a broader rejiggering strategy of the the global economy and our role as its leader, that the party of tax and spend that NEVER complains when your taxes go up, minimum wage increases, and more regulations pass that could fill every single one of the Epstein binders - but tariffs - whoa whoa whoa suddenly ask what about the cost on consumers? How nice of you. They suddenly become Austrian Economists. Edited July 15 by Big Blitz

What would “cutting regulations” in NY do? This is federal policy. As I’ve said from the beginning, I don’t give a solitary ***** where my stuff comes from so long as it meets our safety standards. And I’ll be damned if I’m going to pay higher costs for worse products just so some loser in Ohio can stand at a production line all day. 1

If a production worker in Ohio is a loser in your mind, what would you consider a low level government employee in New York that spends large chunks of his workday arguing with strangers on the Internet? Rhetorical question. 1

B-Man Posted July 16 Posted July 16 Donald Trump has made another favorable trade deal with a country that was reluctant to open up its market to the United States. Trump announced the deal on Truth Social, proudly stating, “This landmark Deal opens up Indonesia’s ENTIRE MARKET to the United States for the first time in History.” The announcement came as U.S. tariff revenues reportedly hit record levels. Tariffs not only bring in money but force countries to renegotiate unfair trade policies against America. In his Tuesday post, Trump wrote, “This morning I finalized an important Deal with the Republic of Indonesia after speaking with their Highly Respected President Prabowo Subianto.” He added details about the deal: “As part of the Agreement, Indonesia has committed to purchasing $15 Billion Dollars in U.S. Energy, $4.5 Billion Dollars in American Agricultural Products, and 50 Boeing Jets, many of them 777’s.” Ordinary Americans will benefit from the deal too, he argued, if they are in the farming or fishing industries, because Indonesia will finally be willing to buy food products from American sellers that they have never bought before. “For the first time ever, our Ranchers, Farmers, and Fishermen will have Complete and Total Access to the Indonesian Market of over 280 million people,” Trump wrote. Importantly, Trump has not entirely removed tariffs, but Indonesia has agreed to a rate, the president stated. “In addition, Indonesia will pay the United States a 19% Tariff on all Goods they export to us, while U.S. Exports to Indonesia are to be Tariff and Non Tariff Barrier FREE.” If this agreement lasts, that’s a pretty big deal, extremely favorable to the USA. https://pjmedia.com/catherinesalgado/2025/07/15/trump-announces-landmark-indonesia-trade-deal-n4941789 1

Tariffs are bad.

The Frankish Reich Posted July 23 Author Posted July 23 Meanwhile, on the Self-Dealing Trump Administration Front: Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick's kids now run (ostensibly) his former firm, Cantor Fitzgerald. They are openly betting on the proposition that collected tariffs will be refunded by the Treasury if/when the courts strike down Trump's (his) tariffs. Can't make this sh!t up. https://www.msn.com/en-us/money/economy/cantor-fitzgerald-offers-to-buy-the-rights-in-potential-refunds-from-companies-that-have-paid-trump-s-tariffs/ar-AA1J1A4I
The Frankish Reich Posted July 23 Author Posted July 23 And meanwhile, on the objective/non-ideological front: Krugman points out a particularly incoherent feature of the new Japan default tariff rate. Update: Friends have been pointing out that this deal means that Japanese cars will pay 15 percent tariffs, while US car producers will still be paying 50 percent on imported steel. Not exactly a strategy to boost manufacturing. What were they thinking? They probably weren’t thinking. 1
