Cody Ford went for a 5th … and Bates is way better …

If this trade doesn’t get done then I think the Bills keep him another year as backup OL … they really couldn’t replace him for the cap savings in 2024

But Ford was a former 2nd round pick. Teams tend to look at them and say "if we can just get that untapped potential out..."

I agree though the Bills likely weren't cutting Bates if they couldn't trade him.

Bottom line for me - I think a 5th is a reasonable price to pay for Bates who has two years of control left at $3m a year which is not guaranteed  …

At worst he is a useful backup that can play the three interior positions and Tackle in an emergency … at best he can be a starter … not great by any means but superior to the likes of Feliciano and Saffold who have passed through here recently for more money then Bates will get the next two years …

He has always been a backup. I think Bills fans think he is worth more than he actually is.

Some Bills fans do not value him but he has done whatever Bills wanted of him and treated like a hot potato.

Ok, but that doesn't factor into his trade value.

His value is he can save one player being active allowing another player being active - an extra RB, TE, WR, etc and if a player is injured on OL he can hold any position well if not consistent starter.
