Rams Team Building Strategy Will It Be Duplicated or a Rareity

And if McVay stays around (I think he will) then I can see Stafford doing a team friendly extension this offseason. Taking less than market rate, kicking the can down the road and trying to win again. Stafford has made plenty of money. He went to LA to win. Whitworth retiring saves them $16m. Stafford re-doing his deal could save them another $15m. They don't need to move a lot more money around after that to stay competitive.

The biggest question is "Will Donald carry on?" Because they are 25% less of a team without him. He is in the conversation for best defensive player ever.

Good thing the Bills took Sammy there

Also, the Rams had two 1st rounders that year. Greg Robinson #2 overall!

Yea they had 4 firsts over two drafts from trading away the right the draft RGIII. From them they got: Tavon Austin (bust); Alec Ogletree (bust); Greg Robinson (super bust); Aaron Donald (maybe the best defensive player OAT)

It's a statistical outlier. Kudos to them for pulling it off. You could make a good argument that the Rams were the 5th or 6th best team in the league and the stars aligned for them this year.

If you really want to mimic their success then a) draft another Aaron Donald and b) draft another Cooper Kupp. Good luck.

it'd be an unpersuasive argument given that outstanding D-line, a lockdown corner, a good CB2 to complement, the WR corps when healthy, an O-line that can pass protect well, and Stafford's arm strength.  the Rams were loaded.  they also could've lost in the playoffs easily, but no need to downplay their talent.

rams spending futures and money to win now is nothing new.

teams have done this when they have a cost controlled QB

teams were never as aggressive to trade 1st and 2nds which are viewed as the building blocks for your future. That is the difference with the Rams compared to prior teams.

I would argue this year there was no truly great team, rather a ton of very good teams that each had a flaw you could attack. If you said anyone of these teams won this years title would you have been surprised:

Bills

Chiefs

Packers

Bucs

Rams

SF

TEN*

DAL*

Asterisks on these two because: The Titans probably had the worst QB of the bunch but with Henry they were a very solid team. Dallas everyone doubts and I get as they get overhyped, but they had the 2nd best point differential in the NFL and had they have enough horses it wouldn't have been stunning. So yea I would say for virtually everyone one of these teams had the stars aligned slightly better maybe they win instead of LA. Hell the Titans were a bounced INT from kicking the GW field goal and the Bucs barely got edged despite Brady doing his thing.

Realistically I think this may be the case for the foreseeable future as the AFC has a bunch of young hot shot QBs and a good amount of talent while the NFC is in a reorder of sorts.

in a cap era with high paid QB you generally cannot be all star everywhere.

next year you have cap issues in KC and GB

What good are draft picks if they end up being Zach Moss or Cody Ford? Rams won a Super Bowl, their method worked

Worked ONCE, by 3 points , taking the lead with less than two min left. Pretty hard to reproduce that building process. More luck. Brady was out , lacking weapons, Rodgers played poorly and was eliminated. Then they got lucky not playing the Bills if Chiefs, but got a Hc first time in the playoff run and against a sophomore Qb in his first huge game. That’s not some grand reproducible blueprint but more likely once in a lifetime everything breaking your way type of luck. Not saying it didn’t work this once , but let’s see how anyone reproduces that scenario. Bills have tried FA additions, but they just didn’t work well in the current coaching schemes.  It’s just one title which will be forgotten quickly as Rams fans will not be happy not getting back to the game next year. I think they have a Good shot of even not making the playoffs next year.  They are no dynasty !
