Nobody, but nobody says ***** you like Dylan.

From the “We Are The World” session:

Bob Dylan wasn’t quite as gracious when Al Jarreau introduced himself by saying, “Bobby, in my own stupid way I just want to tell you I love you.” Dylan didn’t even give poor Al a glance and walked away. Dave Breskin of LIFE magazine recounted that Al simply said, “My idol!” and started sobbing.

Why are their no tambourines in mr. tambourine man?

That is kind of like Alanis and irony.  Dylan lyrics are always beautiful, cryptic, poetry open to interpretation.  Hey! Mr. Tambourine man, play a song for me
I'm not sleepy and there is no place I'm going to
Hey! Mr. Tambourine man, play a song for me
In the jingle jangle morning I'll come following you

Though I know that evening's empire has returned into sand
Vanished from my hand
Left me blindly here to stand but still not sleeping
My weariness amazes me, I'm branded on my feet
I have no one to meet
And the ancient empty street's too dead for dreaming

Hey! Mr. Tambourine man, play a song for me
I'm not sleepy and there is no place I'm going to
Hey! Mr. Tambourine man, play a song for me
In the jingle jangle morning I'll come following you

Take me on a trip upon your magic swirling ship
My senses have been stripped
My hands can't feel to grip
My toes too numb to step
Wait only for my boot heels to be wandering
I'm ready to go anywhere, I'm ready for to fade
Into my own parade
Cast your dancing spell my way, I promise to go under it

Hey! Mr. Tambourine man, play a song for me
I'm not sleepy and there is no place I'm going to
Hey! Mr. Tambourine man, play a song for me
In the jingle jangle morning I'll come following you

Though you might hear laughing, spinning, swinging madly across the sun
It's not aimed at anyone
It's just escaping on the run
And but for the sky there are no fences facing
And if you hear vague traces of skipping reels of rhyme
To your tambourine in time
It's just a ragged clown behind
I wouldn't pay it any mind
It's just a shadow you're seeing that he's chasing

Hey! Mr. Tambourine man, play a song for me
I'm not sleepy and there is no place I'm going to
Hey! Mr. Tambourine man, play a song for me
In the jingle jangle morning I'll come following you

And take me disappearing through the smoke rings of my mind
Down the foggy ruins of time
Far past the frozen leaves
The haunted frightened trees
Out to the windy beach
Far from the twisted reach of crazy sorrow
Yes, to dance beneath the diamond sky
With one hand waving free
Silhouetted by the sea
Circled by the circus sands
With all memory and fate
Driven deep beneath the waves
Let me forget about today until tomorrow

Hey! Mr. Tambourine man, play a song for me
I'm not sleepy and there is no place I'm going to
Hey! Mr. Tambourine man, play a song for me
In the jingle jangle morning I'll come following you

Rolling Stone's Greil Marcus review:  What is this shiiiite?

Bob had enough, he was gonna release a few cowboy albums, far worse than his gospel fad. And triple the anger for invading his former family privacy retreat in ..... WOOD-STOCK.....

Speaking of the Gospel albums, I know it’s just me, but I love Saved, one of my favs of his. It just rocks so hard, and his singing/phrasing is phenomenal.

saw him perform that stuff at Maple Leaf Gardens back in the day, no worse than Neil Young's not giving 2 effs what his fans think era at the same time.

if you took out some of the ladies wailing this would improve Saved three-fold

I saw that tour at Kleinhan’s MH, people were pissed, only Gospel songs. I like the backup singers though on Saved, especially the call-and-response on the title track. To me, it wasn’t until the Dylan and the Heartbreakers tour that I thought they overstayed their welcome.

Yeah, that was the 1981 tour, I saw a few shows (but not in Buffalo), much better IMO than the Gospel tour.

He played 2 shows at Kleinhans, I was at the 1st, here's the setlist:

Massey Hall shows in Toronto were a couple weeks earlier. If you didn't know, one of them is in the Bootleg Series 13 box from 1-1/2 years ago.

Out of probably 200 concerts I have never seen Dylan... had a chance to see Cat Stevens but wound up doing something else, probably puss related. Nice to have that under your belt, Dylan is the type of artist we will see no more.

I believe I've seen him 20x, second only to the Stones... last time was over 10 years ago. His shows are definitely hit-or-miss, but catch him on the right night & your jaw will hit the floor, at least that used to be the case for me.

Yeah I've heard that from other people too, hit or miss throughout the years. 20 plus times is pretty wild... made me think about who I've seen the most. Spirit, Savoy Brown, Moodys, Tull at least 4 times, really think it was 4 though. Never saw the Stones either lol.

He's always on tour, so there were plenty of opportunities, especially where I'm at in Baltimore with DC/Philly/AC/NYC close, plus he played some wild venues from minor-league baseball stadiums to small clubs to an outdoor tiki bar in Delaware (the late, great Kahunaville) AND his tickets used to be cheap.

I was making a dumb joke, but I appreciate the response. I never heard the song before.

Have you done a few close watches of Interiors?

really bad Ingmar Bergman imitation, smoking crater bad imitation.

I like it though, gets rid of unwanted company.

I’ve got it on BD cause the price was right and I’m a bit of a completist, but Interiors was a long-time-ago one-and-done for me zzzzzzzz.

Thanks, good lunch-time reading. This is my favorite part, QFT:

“The Petty shows seemed particularly pointless; why did Bob Dylan need a stringy-haired sycophant onstage with him?”
