My rankings/scouting reports for this year's QB crop

Feel free to flame away, but I figured some of you guys would enjoy reading this. I plan to build it out a bit more with my free time to add some of the fancy charts I threw together throughout the draft process. This webpage was originally designed to basically bring all the videos on each prospect together under one roof. I got busy at work/some of the sources I used for videos got banned from YouTube and I'm now beginning to repurpose it for basically a historical catalog of my take on the QBs. Obviously I had opinions on last year's class, but I have no proof of how I felt about them at the time, but beginning with the 2018 class, you can view my thoughts, comparisons, etc. through the following link. The home page and 2019 draft class pages are all under construction still (unchanged from how I had originally designed them, but you'll see a drop down menu under 2018 prospects that lists the QBs based on my personal rankings and each prospect's page has a scouting report (reports are smaller once you get past Luke Falk).

Nice work and thanks for sharing.

I see Lamar Jackson's narrow base as a big issue. There's a reason you don't see any NFL QB with a base like that. He needs to widen it a bit an step into all his throws. Shouldn't be too hard to fix, though.

I'm surprised you have Rosen rates #3 for readiness to play. He's definitely #1 in my book. He's ahead of the other guys with his mechanics, technique, and his ability to diagnose.

For the most part I agree on everything you wrote expect Lamar Jackson.

He is the 5th best in this class and is a total project (he should have stayed in school).

Once you change his Base (if you can) you have to change the rest of his mechanics.  think Tim Tebow in terms of how bad his mechanics are

It's not THAT bad and his relative accuracy speaks to that.

Widening his stance does not change the rest of his mechanics. We see on film that when he has a good stance and steps into the throw, he is deadly.

Aside from developing a consistently good base, the major concern is the mental aspect of his game. He reportedly did bad in the team interviews and while in a pro-style system, it's not like he ran the offense. He still needs to show that he can diagnose a defense.

Changing his base changes timing, changes release point, changes follow thru.

Yes his mental part is also an issue, I have said since he declared and will continue to say this he should have stayed in school.  Focus on his passing and them come out, he will NOT get the time to work the mechanical issues to greatly improve his passing.  Just my opinion based on watching him.  I think he is going to rush his development and wash out as a gimmick.  Staying in school one more year would have really helped his growth.

Good work, but why don't you project who the best QB is?

Also, put your drop down menu in order. Darnold is the second from the top with Allen before him.  Yet, you say "Similarly to Allen..." but Allens write up is just below Darnold... See the confusion?

I do mention who I think the best overall prospects are when you open up a prospect page, but the short cut is that they’re listed in order of my overall rankings, so I think the top 5 in order are Lamar, Darnold, Allen, Mayfield, and Rosen. I’d also say that ranking who the “best QB will be” is a pretty complicated exercise. For example, I think Mayfield and Rosen likely end up being better than Allen, but the potential with Allen is high enough that I’d take him ahead of them.

Regarding the “similarly” thing, I wrote the Allen report first and originally just had it organized in a Word document so it made sense at that point and I guess I forgot to look for that when converting it to the web page.

Made some tweaks to the page this morning:

  • Added a page under the 2018 Prospects menu that includes all of the charts that I've posted here/at Buffalo Rumblings in the past
  • Added a page under the 2018 Prospects menu that lays out my number grading system, my grades for the 2018 prospects, and my grades for them relative to the 2017 prospects
  • Some formatting tweaks to the player-specific pages, making my rankings more obvious
  • Added player comps for the lower-tier prospects that I've scouted (Falk, Litton, and Woodside; the film on Luis Perez is so limited that I don't feel comfortable making comparisons for him).
