2016 Sports Illustrated article on Josh Rosen

And that's a fair point....honestly, if it were me, I would have to spend some real time with him and get to know who he is....enough time to break down the public persona, interview teammates in person to watch their body language, ask open-ended questions to those close to him in the football community, and make sure I'm getting all of that information. Because, I don't think anyone will argue the raw supreme talent he has as a QB and if so inclined and focused, can play at the NFL level. The issue you've brought up and it's a genuinely fair one, is CAN he mature and grow into the man he needs to be so he can successfully lead an NFL franchise? 

 

Nothing will be guaranteed either way, but IF the Bills are so high on him to trade way up to #2 as some sources have suggested, my entire due diligence at this point is centered on finding the answer to: who is Josh Rosen and what turns his gears? What truly, deeply motivates him? 

 

Look, just as a bookend to our discussion, which I appreciate by the way, I was a "troubled" teenager and did some really bad things....things I belonged in prison for....but, honestly, it was also from a broken mind / spirit perspective....I'm not a victim and I'm not a product of a bad environment and I'm not blaming anyone else but me...however, with some help I turned things around and ended up living a life I never thought possible had it not been for some strong interventions in my life and for people giving me the chance to work through some of my issues early in life - specifically my mid teens - Rosen is NOT a teenager, but even at 21, most of us have done a few regrettable things and some of us learn from them...some of us don't....but right now, if I were GM I'd be working my back end off to answer that question about Rosen.

No, it's not that I think it "should be", it's that I don't think being an athlete invalidates their opinion. Just because their words reach a much larger audience doesn't mean I think they should remain mute on subjects truly powerful and personal to them. That's all...nothing more, but absolutely nothing less....many athletes for years have taken to heart personal causes, and I certainly don't agree with all of them - very few of them in fact - but in this country, we celebrate the liberty of speech, we don't put caveats on it because someone works in an industry that provides a wider audience. At least, IMO.

Maybe I am completely wrong. It happens from time to time and my wife reminds me about it frequently.  Great story. I am sincerely glad that life has turned out well for you.

 

I am passionate about UA because my son had a great experience there and it was an excellent value. He is very successful and his education at Alabama hasn't hurt him one iota. I'll be forever grateful to the school.

And that is truly fantastic, sincerely....and just to clarify, it was only in reference to the standards set for football players to qualify to play for D1 teams and basically Rosen being an advocate for saying that sports and academics don't mix at that level because of the demand of time and effort for both. 

 

On a side note, I've lived in Georgia, Florida and southern Virginia in addition to Central New York, and I LOVED living in the south. From the Southern food to my first love, a blonde haired Southern Belle that just had me at the "Heeey" drawl and blue eyes....damn good, damn good....I digress, best wishes to you and your son and look forward to hearing more from you on the board in threads.

And yet, the article also addressed the Stanford issue where Josh admitted he wanted playing time and David Shaw said, we don't have room for you and Josh admitted it would NOT have been a good fit for him and it "killed my ego a little bit"....also, that he took his time to go to UCLA as a positive from what was perceived to be a negative. 

 

And it's not a "counterpoint" because these statements refer to the SAME FRICKEN ISSUES that are taken head-on in the first two articles from SI that started this thread....what is it you don't get? No one is arguing he doesn't need to mature, we've all conceded that point since it wasn't a hard one to make and I don't know anyone who is arguing he doesn't need to show maturation...the ISSUE you don't seem to grasp, is you continue to use the word "elitist" and that he has a bad attitude or shouldn't be able to make political or social statements simply because his beliefs contradict yours....the ISSUE is that he needs to learn how to vocalize and cope with them in a better, more mature way instead of the frat-boy antics he pulled while at UCLA but the fundamental ISSUE with being permitted to express those beliefs, no matter how opposed they are to your own, are still valid and will remain so no matter how much ranting and raving you do and telling those darn kids to get off your lawn....

 

 

Fair enough & you make some very good points.  On the other side though, don't complain when your draft stock falls because your not smart enough to know when to keep your mouth shut.  That & his injury history & I would not trade up for this guy.  & for the record I do think he is the purest passer & most NFL ready QB in this draft.

Thanks for sharing. That's a good article where Trent Dilfer explains Rosen pretty well. He is high maintenance in that he expects everyone to work as hard as him, coaches, players etc. He and Dilfer butted heads, but its really two alpha males kind of clashing. I love this guy and think he has what it takes. I can't believe that people would question his work ethic when he could technically be doing anything besides putting his life on the line. I still think there are going to be teams at the combine who won't like how he interviews, but I do think he is the cerebral, hard working type that our front office is looking for.

I think that would depend upon what the Bills learn from meeting with Rosen and talking to teammates and coaches - what do they think about his passion for the game, his work ethic, how coachable he will be, and how he'll fit into the locker room after actually meeting with him and scouting people who know him?

 

I think he's a fit for trying to build a winning culture in that he has by far the best passing technique and the best footwork in the draft and is closest to the pocket passer they say they want. 

 

I have assumed he would be out of our reach, but it would be marvelous with me if the "d*ck" and "spoiled brat" narratives drop him into a position we can trade up into.  "Hell No, He's not a D*ck!"

I actually think it's good for Rosen. Anything that puts him in a better situation or on a better team will earn him many more millions in the long run than he'll miss on his rookie contract by slipping a few draft slots down.
