Besides pushing the rules to the limit (Sometimes further) -It's the LITTLE THINGS... Tiny, miniscule details and observations about the game that 99% of other coaches dismiss as unimportant... From measurables of the players he drafts.. to putting together a final roster.. From the practice environment... to the locker room environment... He controls it ALL with seemingly meaningless decisions... When you're like Belichick, you've ALREADY considered a scenario where you lose Brady and Garoppolo... This is football, and things happen... Not only have you considered it, but you've also developed a contingency plan to mitigate those circumstances... He's like that... Look at his face... Does he seem like the "think happy thoughts" type of guy? Or does he seem perpetually worried... Imagining scenarios where he might lose, and correcting them in his head... Poring over the opposing teams DETAILS in ways most people can't imagine... Most of his disciplines can't even SNIFF one molecule of his coaching success? -Why? Because he isn't a teacher. He's a powerful manipulator. -Crennell... O'Brien... McDaniels... Not worth half as much without his subliminal direction... Under him, They weren't "coaches" as much as "tools" operating under his order... He's studied them, and knows (better than they do) how to access their greatness. Which is what this whole conversation is actually about... Bottom line: If Belichick is anywhere near as dark, as many of us contend, it's because "the devil" is truly in the details, and BB has mastered those to point someone like Rex/Rob Ryan can't conceive... Come game day this is not what other teams are seeing. Genius actually but smart players are needed. Just how is it that BB putting in 25-30 plays for a weekly game shows how intelligent his players are ? On this very board I read that A Lynn putting in say 30 plays instead of GRs reported 90 or so to "simplify" the Offense just proves that the Bills players are a bunch of morons that can't comprehend a playbook? Saban, a Belichick disciple, claims to prepare his team more to do their individual jobs and less for the particular team they are facing. I heard him say this but then again, it might not be the truth. Thanks, Bill. Eric Mangini was a 21-year-old ball boy in Cleveland when he caught the eye of Belichick because of his work ethic. Belichick started him out working on game film and Mangini stated he was amazed at how much game film Belichick watches of his upcoming opponent vs what he had seen other coaches watch. He also stated that nobody prepares as much as Belichick so he is ready for anything on game day. The Patriots coaches go over endless reels of game film in developing a strategy for each upcoming opponent and that is usually why no team ever beats the Patriots twice in a season. Plus for the defense, unlike the vast majority of NFL teams who run a variation of the same scheme week in and week out, the Patriots are game plan specific. This means that their entire defensive approach changes from week to week depending on the strengths, weaknesses, and tendencies of the opponent. Very seldom do you see the Patriots run the same scheme two consecutive weeks or even against the same opponent a second time! Also, unlike other NFL head coaches who preach "Football is a game, so go have fun"! Belichick is all business and if you don't care to work really hard at your job, you won't be a Patriot very long. They do all the small things........the play that caught my eye the other night was a slant throw to DeAndre Hopkins where Malcom Butler grabbed Hopkins FIRMLY by the left wrist knowing that the official was shielded. There was no intent whatsoever to make it look like anything other than what it was because there didn't have to be. The official couldn't see so he made no attempt to be subtle in the grab. Hopkins caught the ball with one arm but was exasperated that such and obvious grab was missed. But that is the Pats to a tee..........everything is scouted and taken into account and every opportunity taken advantage of. If that play happens on third down and the receiver drops the ball as designed it can change the outcome of a close game. Cheating is just a part of it.......but it's effective and Belichick rightly believes that most of the people in the game are lunkheads and that he will steal right from under their nose until they learn to look for it. Take the communication issues visiting teams have.......it's unreal that this still happens nearly every game but until the league proves the Pats are doing it intentionally and holds them accountable for it they will not stop doing it. Keep in mind that in Cleveland as coach he was less than impressive with a 36-44 overall record. He only took them to the playoffs once...1994. His last season was 5-11. Keep in mind that in Cleveland as coach he was less than impressive with a 36-44 overall record. He only took them to the playoffs once...1994. His last season was 5-11. Whatever his mojo, it is obviously working in New England. The NE team he inherited was much closer than the talent bereft Cleveland team he took over. They had been a playoff team recently under Pete Carrol and had lost of high drafted talent that was just underperforming. If the Modell didn't tank Belichick's last season with the move and he stayed on they probably win a lot........he created the structure of the Ravens organization which has maintained one identity for going on two decades now. GunnerBill Posted September 25, 2016 Share Posted September 25, 2016 (edited) Crennell got to 10-6 with the freaking browns, mcdaniels won a playoff game with tebow, and o'brien made the playoffs last year (and i suspect he'll get there again this season). Mangini had a couple of winning seasons and a playoff appearance too. That's more than could be said for any bills coaches over the last decade and a half. Weis was a disaster, however.The play-off win with Tebow was Fox. Agree with the general point though - the Belichick assistants thing is way overplayed. None have won Superbowls but a fair few have had success at some level and I think Bill O'Brien is going to be successful at Houston for a while.
