Ben completes a long pass down the sidelines to Wheaton and it is very close. Ref calls it in bounds. Pitt is running up to get the play off so it can't be challenged and Seattle deciding whether to challenge. They challenge as the ball is snapped. Whether Carroll got the call in time or not, it was a snap judgement. Pitt on the other hand didn't want to take the chance and were trying to run a play. Call is overturned. The Maclin pass is the same thing. You throw the flag, I saw it as did everyone watching the replay. Diving 40 yard completions often hit the ground. In the first half Watkins catches a third down pass, which is a bang bang play and Buffalo huddles allowing Reid to challenge. Easily could have been overturned and Rex allowed them time to challenge the play. On the Hogan play it was now third down. Challenge the play (only one time out anyway and game is over if you give up the ball). Worst case is that you lose but have discussed third & fourth down with Tyrod. Last week vs NE and third & 6" from mid-field. What does Brady do everytime? Lines them up in no huddle and sneaks for an easy first down. Bills run a sweep, lose yards and kick. Pete Carroll couldn't find his challenge flag so he whispered in the refs ear that he wanted a challenge and they gave it to him. This is what irritates me about NFL referring. The rule says a challenge is requested when a red flag is thrown. No red flag thrown, no challenge. It's not complicated. Follow the rules. pi2000 Posted November 30, 2015 Share Posted November 30, 2015 (edited) Why aren't all plays reviewed in real time by an off-field group of refs, then they can buzz down and alert the crew like they do in the last 2-minutes of the game? It takes no time at all to review a catch or fumble or whatever... get rid of the coaches challenge and just review everything. And why does the review have to take place before the next snap? If a team lines up right a away for a quick snap, then just blow the whistle in the middle of the play or whenever they get notified from the off-field refs and reset the down. It's not a hard problem to solve, we have the technology. For example, during the SEA/PIT game, they had Mike Carey on the broadcast giving them a real time review of the play and he said it was not a catch well before the field ref standing at the replay booth made a decision. Why not just clone Mike Carey and have him present at every game reviewing everything in realtime and correcting calls. It won't slow the game down any more than already is, ie the SF/ARI game was delayed 15min because they couldn't figure out which down it was. That's why a team on the rise needs to go balls out to score as many points as humanly possible so the refs can't screw them as easily. Thinking you're going to break through by playing close games and winning with defense is a recipe for disaster for a team like us. zonabb Posted December 1, 2015 Share Posted December 1, 2015 I've said it before and I'll repeat it... the home team has a distinct advantage on challenges because any potential benefit the home team can get from a challenge results in multiple replays in slow motion on the stadium jumbotrons. It eliminates the guesswork and the communication channels and allows a quicker challenge and also the head coach to see and make the call himself. At home, Rex sees the Maclin catch 5 times before KC can lineup and makes the challenge. In KC, the play probably never went up on the screens all over the stadium and he had to wait for it to go through the channels, which apparently meant they never say it either, and he had to let it go. Players gotta make plays. Blaming the loss on a few challenges is shortsighted. Guys need to tackle, stay in their lanes, and make players. Period. Oh, and Roman needs to get the ball into McCoy's, Clay's, and Sammy's hands 90% of the time, so if you want blame, start with that over-rated joker.
