The U.S. congressman who drafted the 2006 legislation used by DraftKings and FanDuel as proof of their legitimacy says is it ''sheer chutzpah'' for the daily fantasy sites to pretend the law makes them legal. Former Rep. Jim Leach said lawmakers had no idea daily fantasy sports would ''morph into today's cauldron of daily betting.'' He said his anti-gambling act was supposed to stop gambling on the Internet, not promote it.

According to Brent Schrotenboer of USA Today, Nevada has determined that daily fantasy constitutes gambling under state law, bringing such contests within the parameters of the state’s gambling regulations.

“Since offering DFS in Nevada is illegal without the appropriate license, all unlicensed activities must cease and desist,” declares a notice released by the Nevada Gaming Board.

It would interesting to know which congressman and senators are taking donations from professional fantasy football interests.

Great point.

I think this is all leading to one of two outcomes

1) DFS declared to be gambling and not legal, they go the way of online poker.

2) Poker becomes legal as well, both get highly regulated and highly taxed. Look at 20% chop in pots instead of 10. Can see daily limits,

I do not see this as being status qua in 12 months.

  • 4 weeks later...

@SportsCenter: Attorney General sends cease-and-desist letters to both sites, demanding they stop operating in New York.

Thank you Daddy Atty General for protecting me from those mean old fantasy football sites. I just bet $5 last week and won $12.50. I feel protected now.

Gawd I hate these AG's who have to butt in to people's daily lives. Just looking to make headlines with this little announcement. Now Schneidermann can say "I was the first to ban fantasy sports in the nation" ......and he'll lose votes. Bad political move.
