Wait, are we allowed to talk about Gilmore? I mean, he's not in the QB competition...

And no, Gilmore is not Revis. He has more in common with Sherman than Revis. Revis isn't a particularly physical corner, he uses his smooth hips and play recognition to stay in the WRs back pocket.

Gilmore and Sherman are in your face, physical corners who love to move the WR off their route to disrupt the play. It's a tricky line they have to ride to ensure they don't get flagged with penalties. What Gilmore needs to improve at (and something Sherman is great at) is getting his head around when the ball is in the air. The refs are pretty forgiving of contact if the CB is looking back towards the ball but the flag tends to fall out of their pocket if the CB doesn't.

Gilmore got much better at this last season and if he can keep progressing he can be a top tier CB. He's not quite there yet but the guy has been very good in stretches.

So, no, Gilmore isn't Revis, but he doesn't need to be. There are other ways of playing the position that are equally effective.

Good post...Gilmore is much more like Sherman.

The biggest difference between the two is that Sherman--most likely because of his extensive playing time as a WR--has much better ball awareness than Gilmore.

Sherman isn't the best because he never gets beat. He's the best because he is very physical and aggressive, and he uses his WR instincts to beat the WR to the break point of his pass route.

He also finishes plays like nobody's business.

You just can't catch him napping.

Gilmore gets caught with his switch off often enough to detract from his play.
