Rule Proposal: OC/DC can only leave in last year of contract

Too much movement is bad for the game. Contracts should be keep these coaches in place, but allow them to leave with one year left in deal for a promotion. Sign them for min of three years and it gets rid of the one and done upheaval.

Seriously though, promotions are subjective. Although it's a lateral move in terms of title, going from OC in Jacksonville to OC in Seattle would be a promotion in my book.

 

Also, coaches want, and should have the right to, their own hand-picked staffs.

They signed a 3 year deal, they should honor it. Teams have to honor it, why not coaches?

 

BTW, more a pet peave of mine with college coaches...that seems to be the stupidest system ever in my mind...why a coach is free to walk while on contract is just beyond me

The issue is more with the unwritten rule that teams let coordinators leave to get promotions.

 

Is the suggestion that a team would not be permitted to extend that courtesy?

Would it be prohibited for coordinators to move, or would teams just not be forced into allowing coaches to pursue HC opportunities? If teams can still allow the move (and it seems like you would have to allow it) then how many teams would deny the opportunity, knowing that you're going to have a disgruntled employee running your offense / defense?

No, they don't. As mentioned, i am not including the players here.

 

If a coach, including assistants, has a 3 year contract, and is fired, he is still paid.

 

The weird system is college...where if the college fires you and you have 4 years left, they still have to pay you.

 

But if the coach wants to leave, they just walk. More are putting buyout clauses in, but just a whacked system

What just happened is exactly why coordinators should be allowed to leave. Ryan, a defense specialist by nature, becomes the HC of the Bills. Would you really want to force Schwartz to be Rex's lap dog? What happened makes more sense, Schwartz leaves and Rex hires his lap dog from the Jets.

Disagree. The NFLPA approved a collective bargaining agreement that contains a standard form player contract that gives each team the contractual right to cut a player (even if he has a multi-year contract). Exercising a contractual right to terminate a multi-year contract does not amount to "failing to honor it."

It's really long, but the standard player contract starts at page 256.

 

Section 11 of the contract, at page 260, reads:

 

 

 

11 . SKILL, PERFORMANCE AND CONDUCT. Player understands that he is com­peting with other players for a position on Club's roster within the applicable player limits. If at any time, in the sole judgment of Club, Player's skill or performance has been unsatisfactory as compared with that of other players competing for positions on Club's roster, or if Player has engaged in personal conduct reasonably judged by Club to ad­ versely affect or reflect on Club, then Club may terminate this contract. In addition, during the period any salary cap is legally in effect, this contract may be terminated if, in Club's opinion, Player is anticipated to make less of a contribution to Club's ability to compete on the playing field than another player or players whom Club intends to sign or attempts to sign, or another player or players who is or are already on Club's roster, and for whom Club needs room.

I'm also at a loss for how this would be codified.

 

Is it limited to coaches? What if a GM moves on? What if an owner dies? What if a team is sold? What if a HC (like Marrone) opts to quit?

 

This is specifically for hiring coordinators from returning coaches. For instance, Mike Pettine would have been off limits last year (assuming he had more than a 2 year contract). Jim Schwartz is different because there is a new head coach. Teams should be allowed to at least keep a coordinator for two years. That's not an oppressive position to take.

Teams don't have to honor it... After your guaranteed money you can be let go and receive no other money.
