The decline of Stevie Johnson ?

Recommended Posts

I said this summer that I doubt Stevie is on this team next year because of all his injuries. I like the guy but his days are numbered.

It would make sense for the Bills to cut Stevie and leave themselves with $8.5M dead money, why exactly?

bc he can't stay healthy

Let me get this straight, we cut him because he "cant stay healthy" (how many games has he missed in the last 3 seasons, btw?) so we can be without one of our best WR and take a $8.5M cap hit. Makes sense (not).

I agree with the other guys here. I have had back issues on and off since I was 15 and I competed in track in college (as a decathlete) and have run a number of road races from a mile to a marathon. My issues were usually groin pulls, back spasms/back alignment, and the occasional IT band injuries. I pulled my hammy once in a cold race for the 110 high hurdles, but no other issues there ever.

I DONT like SJ, but this is totally ridiculous!!!!! He makes a lot of catches and has not missed games.. He not that highly paid, and has NOT had the best QBs throwing him the ball. The team is better with him than with out him!!!!

Hard to Decline when there was never a rise!!!

How have you not been banned from the board? All you do is troll. Stevie Johnson is a seventh-round draft pick who has had multiple 1,000 receiving seasons. He's one of the best route-runners in the game. Stevie has certainly exceeded expectations and succeeded in the NFL. Do you have nothing better to do?

Just because he is a decent receiver, does not mean I need to like him. Unfortunately, he is the best the Bills have at the moment.

Reasons for not liking him are because of his low class antics that have cost the team, and the chokes when the game is on the line. Also, I have a hard time liking a guy that admits to not giving 100%. So, by not working out like he should he might be healthier or even play better. Maybe he has been healthy and used the injury stuff so he can do less. Who really knows.

I cant believe how quick people are to pile onto one of most productive player.....you do realize Stevie Johnson is one of the most productive bills WR's EVER right?

no I don't, you mean lee evans right? who has twice the stats that sj has to date? or moulds right? oh no I know you meant dubenion who is right behind evans. Reed? right? I mean josh reed who still has more yards than stevie.....oh wait none of them had 3 concecutive 1000 yard seasons. why even play the superbowl? the ultimate acheivement has already been accomplished.

Well, I am a SJ13 fan... but, it is interesting looking at his career. Did you know that Josh Reed has more receiving yards?

264. Marquise Goodwin - 1 game - 0 yards (on 1 catch)

232. Chris Hogan - 5 games - 16 yads

190. Frank Summers - 5 games - 49 yards

185. Lee Smith - 31 games - 52 yards

178. Tashard Choice - 22 games - 61 yards

101. Robert Woods - 5 games - 265 yards

87. TJ Graham - 20 games - 388 yards

85 Brad Smith - 30 games - 392 yards

84. Naaman Roosevelt - 16 games - 396 yards

47. CJ Spiller - 51 games - 914 yards

37. Scott Chandler - 38 games - 1172 yards

29. Roscoe Parrish - 77 games - 1502 yards

28. Ernie Warlick - 56 games - 1551 yards

26. Joe Cribbs - 64 games - 1783 yards

24. Quinn Early - 48 games - 1868 yards

23. Fred Jackson - 81 games - 1905 yards

22. OJ Simpson - 112 games - 1924 yards

21. Bill Brooks - 47 games - 1959 yards

18. Jay Riemersma - 90 games - 23047 yards

17. Don Beebe - 76 games - 2537 yards

15. Haven Moses - 59 games - 2641

14. James Lofton - 59 games - 2736 yards

13. Glenn Bass - 69 games - 2799 yards

12. Pete Metzelaars - 156 games - 2921 yards

11. Steve Johnson - 69 games, 3489 yards

10. Josh Reed - 115 games, 3575 yards

9. Peerless Price - 84 games - 3772 yards

8. Bob Chandler - 113 games - 3999 yards

7. Jerry Butler - 88 games - 4301 yards

6. Thurman Thomas - 173 games - 4341 yads

5. Frank Lewis - 80 games - 4638 yards

4. Elbert Dubenion - 99 games - 5294 yrds

3. Lee Evans - 109 games - 5934 yards

2. Eric Moulds - 154 games - 9096 yards

1. Andre Reed - 221 games - 13095 yards

Blue denotes player currently on the roster.

Andre Reed averaged just under 60 yards a game over 14 seasons or 221 games with the Bills.

59.25 yards per game.

Johnson has averaged just over 50 yards per game over 5 seasons or 69 games with the Bills.

50.56 yards per game.

At that rate, Steve Johnson will need 258 games to break Reeds mark. That would mean an additional 11 seasons and a few playoff games. The exact math would be 11.18 seasons. Steve Johnson would play for the Bills 16 years and be on the roster in 2024. He would be 38.

That right there. The guy has gone through a good deal of injuries and maybe he will start missing a game here or there but he hasn't yet. I can understand the idea that he may not get the production as in years past but so many variables factor into that. Having more options at receiver, a rookie QB, poor offensive play calling and tons of 3 and outs being only a few of them.

SJ is not a pricey player and if you rid of him Woods will command more top corner coverage making him less effective. However I do believe that Woods will be that top WR in the future.

Three consecutive 1,000 yard seasons with Tredwards and Fitztmagic as his QB. I really like SJ at slot and a single big game can have him on track for another 1k yard season. He isn't Calvin Johnson

He never has anything negative to say about his team and he actually wants to be Buffalo unlike many players in the past. He is good to the fans and will be the first to admit a mistake. Sometimes he says some ballsy things but in comparison to many NFL'rs off the field issues he isn't a distraction.

For his fair salary and being drafted in 7th he is a very good value at WR.

Poor coaching, drafting, QB play, defensive play, and a lack of fire under the Bill's arses over the last few years has cost us far more wins than 2 or 3 SJ drops.

People like to say he is not a #1 receiver but for the most part he has done the best with what he has. A lack of talent around him or the FO inability to get another top WR talent doesn't diminish what he has done. On the open market i would bet Jersey, Miami and, NE would all offer the guy a contract. I think he would be a stud at slot in NE.

People act as though we deserve top talent or we should have a better WR than SJ. We are the Bills, we have been a joke for a decade. If guys like Marshall, Bryant, Jones, Green, Fitzgerald jump to sign in Buf over the next few years as FA's then maybe we can start talking about the shortcomings of SJ, but for now he has been one of the most productive WR's in Bills history. There are so many other players that don't pull their weight we can use as scapegoats, even at the WR position.

I know that i have veered dangerously off topic but i digress....

Dictated, not written

Steven Johnson Jr

So by the end of his contract next year he could be the #5 all time.. Not too shabby. Your calculations don't take into account that Reed started his first year and Stevie didn't start until his third year. This makes your averages needing an asterisk. Stevie has been averaging over 62 yards per game as a starter. 69 games, but only started in 51.. Was only active in 16 of the first 32 games.

I had thought about going that extra mile but figured enough people knew that to look at the information objectively. Also, I would have then had, because I am crazy, to do that to everyone else on the list. Like how Josh Reed got used a lot...but hardly ever used. How Quinn Early was thrown to a ton because everyone else on the field was covered. He also dropped a bunch and just was a bush here. Yeah, it'd have brought up too many rough memories.
