Time for a Kicker

Recommended Posts

I know it is considered a minuscule issue or as some say "we can grab one as an UDFA"...but I hope we are rethinking our kicking game with a young, strong, accurate kicker. We need the following:

1) One who can consistently kick the ball out of the endzone or deep into it;

2) One who can consistently perform the onside erratic bounce kick (need two bounces not one);

3) One who can make a field goal from 50-55 without batting an eye;

I see alot of close games in our future and the kicking game may be an overlooked component and a difference maker. Al Davis caught alot of heat for drafting Sebastian Janikowski with an early pick but he is still booming kicks and is accurate. I am not saying we need a kicker in Rounds 1-6, but if there is a talented young kicker out there, he may be worth a look. Lindell is a great teammate, but if Chan didn't trust him to kick a 45 yarder, what is that saying about our chances to win close games.

The Atlanta kicker is a case in point. That dude rocked that kick with 10 yards to spare.

just a stream of thought being spilled out of my head here but....

note that the atlanta kicker isnt doing kickoffs, i believe (it wasnt him on the squib atleast)

i imagine in a dome, lindell likely boots that kick fairly consistently - it was what, like 48 yards?

if theres a guy out there i wouldnt mind at all pursuing them though. upgrades always welcome when available. i think that they were probably waiting til the offseason to make a move to keep continuity there, but i was initially a little surprised they didnt bring kaeding in for a look.

I hear ya. I just don't want to waste a roster spot on a kickoff specialist because it was erratic last year. He had a few go out of endzone and others at goaline.

Chan may have killed any confidence Lindell had before the season by playing his "percentages"...

Open competition for kicker would be great and I have a feeling Marrone has no allegiance to Lindell or any other kicker. He'll want one who can boom it, squib it properly and make 50 yarders consistently.

You don't think Lindell could make a 49-yarder in a dome with ten yards to spare? I'm not saying I disagree with you, but that is not a good example. It would be nice to have a young kicker like Zuerlein (sp?) from the Rams or Blair Walsh from Minnesota, but Lindell is far from the least dependable kicker in the league.

Here is the way I see it: Chan and his goons so mismanaged the talent on this team, that I almost want to give some of the players a mulligan for the last 3 years ( and LAST year, in particular).

One player who comes to mind is George Wilson, who I though had played well before Wanny got hold of him. Lindell falls into the same category. I think Chan was so paranoid about the "what ifs" when it came to the possibility of missing a 40+ yard field goal that he simply rarely ever let Lindell attempt them.

Let's just hope that the new staff has strong enough player evaluation skills that they can take a close, hard look at ALL of the players on the team and make intelligent decisions about which ones to keep -- and which ones to let go.

definitely.

i have mixed feelings - id like an upgrade, but kicker can be a weird position where you dont know how much you miss what you had til its gone.

im curious to the folks that check out camp - did they ever give powell any chance to kickoff at practices?

Dependable at 20-40...interested to know what his longest is compared to other kickers and his percentage from 50+

Also, his kickoffs typically land inside the 5 yd line (I know there is one school of thought that if you kick it higher and land it at the 5 you can attack the runner quicker and avoid the 20 yd gain)...I am of the opinion kicking it out of the end zone is the better option and give them the ball at the 20. Lindell can't do that.

as a reference, lindells long is 55. bryant hit a 60+ yarder once 5-6 years ago, but otherwise a long of 55.

neither should be on kickoff duty in an ideal world.

not a ton of guys that kick it out of the endzone, and are super accurate on fgs really. its more rare of a skill set than most think.

Thanks for the stat NoSaint. Never thought of Lindell as a power kicker but he does have a boot. Reliability 50+ is questionable I suppose.

As for guys above saying there are bigger problems on this team...yes, there are...which we have all argued about ad nauseum. Would be nice to know our kicker is rock solid. Baby steps boys, baby steps.

We were 10th in the league in kickoff yards given up. Kicker is the least of our worries. Let's see that Atlanta kicker make that FG outdoors in the wind. Lindell is fine. There is plenty of other places this team needs to improve. And for the record I agreed with cutting Moorman. He has been declining for years. He may do fine in the dome in Dallas but he had just as many shanks as he did boomers in Buffalo and showed no skill at landing it inside the twenty anymore.

Everyone knows he can't kick for touchbacks, but to praise another aging kicker who has actually been cut before because he hit a 49-yarder in a dome is a little ridiculous. When Lindell lines up for 40-50 yarders, I have more confidence in him than I would in most kickers in the league.

No, that was Bryant on the squib. But he doesn't normally do it, Bosher does it.

I agree with the OP...it is absolutely time for a new kicker, and yes, they are out there to be had.

Case-in-point: Washington cut Billy Cundiff and signed Kai Forbath, who was not on anyone's roster and had never kicked in an NFL game, and he missed 1 FG all season (in week 16). These guys are out there, and they're good.

I'd love to spend a 5th or 6th round pick on a guy like Dustin Hopkins from FSU or Caleb Sturgis from Florida
