The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

Ok, here we go with my take after having had a night to sleep off that hangover, and with that, I'll probably ease away from TSW until next week when I'll hopefully be in a better mood:

The Good:

CJ Spiller. I know the fumble was costly but I chalk that up to bad luck. CJ clearly showed he now "gets it" and is a legitimate threat to break it every time he touches the ball. He even pass blocked well. Defenses will fear this guy.

Cordy Glenn. The Bills hit the jackpot and hopefully this is our LT for 10 years. The OL in general played very well.

Scott Chandler will have a big year if he stays healthy.

Donald Jones made plays. With Nelson out he probably moves into the slot and Graham will take the outside position.

Chris Kelsay. Sorry, had to say it. He was the best D lineman on the field for the Bills yesterday. Those of you who wanted him to be cut should be ashamed.

Wildcat defense. Tebow was a non-factor (aside from stifling the D's aggressiveness -- see below).

Run defense. Huge improvements here, but I think that was a focus of the gameplan (to the detriment of defending the quick pass).

The Bad:

Defensive Strategy. As I and a friend watched the game, we both commented it appeared the DL were too concerned about "containment." The Jets were making quick throws and the receivers had 5-yard cushions. No pass rush to speak of. Minimal blitzing. I found myself wishing (shudder) George Edwards was still coaching. I hope Wanny is sleeping at OBD this week, preparing adjustments.

Stephon Gilmore. Rook gets a bit of a pass in his first regular season action, but he was abused.

Leodis McKelvin. Same old Leo. Athletically gifted, absolutely no ball skills or awareness. And why not run out the kickoff with 20 seconds left in the 1st half when we're already going to take a knee on offense? I can't imagine the coaches told him to do that.

Freddie's injury. Looked gruesome when it happened, and Landry is already one of my new least favorite players. Hope it's just a sprain and he doesn't miss major time. Hate to call this an "upside" but Spiller looked brilliant.

The Ugly:

This begins and ends with one word -- Fitzpatrick. The three picks were absolutely brutal, and the OL gave him time. I don't know what happened, but an NFL QB simply can NOT throw that pick six to start the 3rd quarter. Talk all you want about the trumped up statistics and TDs in the 2nd half; we all knew the game was over.

I'm as big an optimist as anyone around here, and watching the combination of Fitz' inaccuracy and another piss-poor showing by the defense was enough to sober me up in a hurry.

Not abandoning ship, but I've got one hand on the railing. To say the next two games against KC and Cleveland are "must wins" is the understatement of the decade.

Have a good week, folks -- don't kill each other in here. And yes, Go Bills.

eball - I concur on each of your observations and will add:

The Good - John Potter (I think he was 3 out of 4 on kicking it out of endzone). Sad that I have to name the kickoff specialist as the only other Good besides Spiller and the OL.

The Bad - No aggresiveness, no thirst for blood, no physicality or ability to hit hard...I watched the Jets and other teams yesterday (the Niners, Patriots) attack players and attack the ball...it seemed that we were the courteous next door neighbor when playing defense ("Hello, my name is Leodis, may I attempt to wrap your feet and tackle you? No? OK, please proceed to run by me")

The Ugly - Defensive and offensive adjustments on the fly. Our coaches did not demonstrate one bit of ingenuity when the game was getting out of hand early. When our passing game faltered, we kept passing (and did score three TD's) but we should have used Spiller even more to control the ball and keep it out of the hands of Fitz (did I just say I wanted to keep the ball out of the hands of our own QB?) On defense, why not "jam" the WR's at the line of scrimmage...this "bend but don't break" defensive scheme works sometimes but not yesterday. Quick slant routes, the two screens to Santonio Holmes and other quick passing plays have killed us last year and continue to wreak havoc on our LB's and CB's which goes back to "The Bad" above - we need to get that "killer instinct" engrained in the minds of these players. These guys make millions of dollars...it seems our coaches coddle and stroke their egos all day.

Players will play hard and attack the ball when they are coached with intensity (a la Harbaugh and Bellicheat). As much as I hate Bellicheck, Ryan and Harbaugh, I respect the intensity and fire they bring to the game. The Buffalo Bills, it seems, don't have (or at least didn't have) a fire in their belly.

We still gave up something like 120 yards on the ground. IMO, I wouldn't consider that good run defense, especially since we couldn't cover the pass to save our lives.

The Spiller fumble completely threw out the rest of the game, also. Especially since much of his yardage came when the game was already out of hand and the Jets D was looking for pass plays. The stat looks nice though. Hopefully he shows this talent when it's needed and actually takes care of the ball.

I really have nothing good to say about yesterday.

I'd stick the overall D performance in there with Fitz as an "ugly." While I'm not happy with Fitz's performance QBs will have games where they toss 3-4 INTs. It happens - let's hope it doesn't happen again this season though.

The D, on the other hand, made a horrible Jets offense look like the Packers or Saints. This after an offseason of spending and drafting to shore it up. I wasn't expecting them to be in mid season form but their effort yesterday was disturbing. They are miles away from being a solid D.

Let's add Mario complaining about hands to the face to the ugly list. I don't like to see my best player manhandled by an UDFA. I like it even less when he complains about the reffing to explain his lack of impact.

Agreed...see Aggressiveness and Coddled Pro athlete comment above.

I was complaining about our Def coaching during the preseason & people kept saying that it was "just preseason", well here's what you get. Said it before & I'm saying it again, Wanny is NOT the answer at Def Coordinator! It is possible that we will have an even worse D this year and that is with more talent & a weaker shedule. Where is Jerry Grey when you need him? At least the players played with intensity for him.
