For Those Of You Who Don't Want QB In 1st or 2nd

Recommended Posts

Why do we need to draft a QB this year? Will Ponder or Mallett or any other 2nd/3rd round draft choice be as good or better than Fitzy? Lets use all of our picks on the D and the Offensive Line. Sign Volek or Thigpen as our backup and look to next yrs 2012 draft for the QB of the future. Can we trade up for Luck next yr, when all the teams needing QB's drafted one in this years draft?

Teams needing QB's: Buffalo, Carolina, Cincy, Arz, Tenn, Minny, SF, WASH, Miami, Denver

At least 7 teams will take their Qb's this yr...

Yes we need a QB. Fitz is meciocre at best and is a FA at the end of the year. We need to find a QB of the future which is why I think we need to identify whichever one of the guys in this draft is the guy and do whatever we need to do to get him.

There is DL depth later in the draft (plus we have a Carrington and Troup from last years draft to step up this year).

Fitz doesn't have the accuracy and makes too many bad plays/turnovers at key points in games. We need a QB, badly and not a piece of crap like Volek or Thigpen.

I would be completely thrilled with a defensive monster at the #3 pick and would not even be crushed if they went D again on the 2nd pick. What I am hoping is that they have a QB in mind (whether it is #3, trade back into 1 or round 2) that will be the future of this team. If they have a guy they love, get him and don't worry what any of the experts (or fans) say.......

I am ok with Fitzgerald starting this year, and signing a veteran QB to back him up (plenty of them out there). Next year is where I would draft my QB of the future. What good is drafting a QB if the line is shot and the defense is amongst the worst in the NFL? Give the QB a chance to be successful

The same people who claim that the Bills don't need a QB in the draft will be the same ones who will be crying for a QB next winter, if Fitz turns in a medicore season in 2011.

I'm as QB hungry as anyone. I don't think you can win in the NFL without one, and I think if you find a long term answer at Qb, you set yourself up for the next 10 years of making playoff runs and competing for championships.

And, to that end, I am of the belief that we have already seen the best Ryan Fitzpatrick has to offer, and that with him at the helm we are limited.

With that being said, I absolutely despise this QB class. Sometimes things don't fall your way, and as Bills fans it seems like those times happen a lot, but in the year we pick 3rd in the draft, the QB class is as unproven and weak as any class in recent memory. Taking Blaine Gabbert 3rd overall doesn't make him any better than what he is. He was an average college football player, who like Losman, may test well athletically, but didn't look like an athlete on the field.

Buffalo HAS to address QB, but my analogy is......they just won a $10,000 shopping spree (having the 3rd pick), but the only place they are allowed to go is Wal-Mart.

Or we can blow a number one pick and trade for Rob Johnson. Or we can blow a number one pick and draft JP. Or we can blow a number one pick and trade for Bledsoe. I am sick of wasting first round picks on mediocre/****ty QB's

You can't not take a QB because you're still hurting from past mistakes, but you also can't just take the best QB available 3rd overall, when he is a marginal first round talent.

No question about it, if Blaine Gabbert is holding up a Bills jersey in front of the Buffalo media, it will generate a lot more buzz and excitement than Marcell Dareus, and we can certainly use that around here, but 2 years from now if he doesn't work out (which I don't think he will) we'll not only still need a QB, but we'll also probably still be struggling to stop the run.

I don't give a **** about a draft buzz. I want the Bills to draft players that make a winning football team. And my point was part of the reason the Bills have sucked the past 10 years is we constantly waste picks seeking that "franchise QB"

My quote- "I am sick of wasting first round picks on mediocre/****ty QB's"

That is applicable to Gabbert and company. 16 TD's/9 Ints in a spread offense in a joke conference. Fitzpatrick had better numbers in the NFL behind without much protection. Fix the oline and/or get a TE and his numbers will get better

Well, you could argue we have wasted picks on RB's (Lynch and McGahee, gone), Defensive Linemen (McCargo, Maybin) and O-Line (Mike Williams).......so I don't think you can isolate Qb as the reason why we're in the position we're in.

As opposed to blowing 1st round picks on an undersized RB, an undersized DE/OLB, another RB that wore out his welcome after 3 years, and reaching for a safety? ;)

Fitzgerald's OK, but I much prefer Fitzpatrick. Then again, they might go with Fitzgibbons.

The whole problem with Newton and Gabbert this year is that they are not Andrew Luck and Matt Ryan. They have some "red flags" and that means that they will never make it as starting QB's in the NFL, say most of the posters out here on our passionate board. But your thread question is extremely valid! I'm at age where I was lucky enough to watch every snap Joe Ferguson took and of course every snap Jim Kelly took in their Bills' careers. (Yeah I know, I'm an old guy.) Fergy was a very lucky 3rd round pick way back in '73. Not that Joe didn't have his problems, and he was never considered one of the best in the NFL during his playing days, he certainly did a great job for a 3rd round draft choice! Jimbo was the #14 pick of the first round in 1983. Although he spent three years in the forgettable USFL, when he came to Buffalo to start his career here in '86, he was still the Bills' 1st round pick from the '83 draft.

Do you know that the only QB's the Bills have drafted within the first 3 rounds since 1983, are Todd Collins in '95, J.P. Lost-man in '04, and Trent Edwards in '07. And Jim Kelly has been retired now since the end of the 1996 season!

Yes, experts who hate the idea of Nix using the #3 pick on Newton or Gabbert, when even you know damn well they will be long gone before the Bills pick again at #34, just exactly when do you think the Bills should draft their next franchise QB? Forget one of the lesser guys in Rounds 3 or lower. Nix should draft Newton or Gabbert this year, and build the rest of the defense and other needs beginning with the 34th pick. Both will end up being good to great starters in the NFL for some teams, in my humble opinion, and it might as well be the Bills.

Let me preface this post with I'm a Fitz "guy", I feel he is a good QB ... but ...

I think a team always needs to be looking for that GREAT QB. What Fitz gives us is the luxury of not having to "reach" (what ever the heck that means) and force a higher grade on a QB to be the first team to pick one. IMHO none of the QBs in this years draft has that "CAN'T MISS" aura about them (I'm not saying none of them won't end up great, I just don't feel they are top 5 talents). Nothing says there isn't a Brady or Romo in there, I'm just not convinced there is a Manning or Rivers there.

I do think we need a QB if only to back up Fitz ... but it's OBDs job to evaluate the players (not overly weighted by our need)and if a QB is there at the right time we can take him, we don't have to force the pick.
